ipad-small2.pngDiscovery K12, an online platform and curriculum to homeschool, is set to begin its 2015-2016 school year on September 8th.

Now entering its third year, the free service has over 16,000 lessons in 90+ courses across seven subjects including Reading/Literature, Language Arts, Math, History/Social Studies, Science, Visual/Performing Arts, and Physical Education. The curriculum is reading, writing, and research based and an alternative to the Common Core curriculum found in public, private, and online virtual schools.

Many homeschoolers use the program year round and are not waiting until September 8th to begin. The flexibility of the program puts parents in charge of their children’s education, but parents must follow the homeschool policies set by their state.

Sheri Wells, a philanthropist and technology engineer, founded Discovery K12 to help educate children worldwide. In addition to the United States, students are using the platform and curriculum from countries such as South Africa, Australia, Japan, China, and the United Kingdom.

Discovery K12 is not only being used by homeschoolers, but also by students within the public school system who use it as reinforcement or to catch up. “Many of the students that come to us from the public school system are behind by 1-2 grade levels,” says Wells.
