You are invited to a commemorative discussion on Grenada, its revolutionary history, its links to the struggle for Afrikan liberation throughout the Americas, and its current relevance for Pan-Afrikanists and internationalist revolutionaries today.

The month of March is a very significant month in the history of revolutionary struggle in Grenada. Many Pan-Afrikanists and revolutionaries are familiar with the March 11, 1973 founding of the New Joint Endeavor for Welfare, Education, and Liberation Movement, aka the New Jewel Movement.  Many more are familiar with the successful launching of the Grenadian revolution on March 13, 1979 initiated by the New Jewel Movement and the People’s Revolutionary Army, which installed the People’s Revolutionary Government and named Maurice Bishop the Prime Minister. Both of these developments were significant accomplishments in the latter half of the 20th century for Pan-Afrikan liberation and the advancement of socialism on a global scale.

However, few are aware of Fendon rebellion of 1795 – 1796, which was one of the most significant Afrikan revolts in the Americas. The Fendon rebellion was launched on March 2, 1795, and is named in honor of Julien Fendon, who was a Free Person of color who organized other Free Afrikans and the vast majority of the Afrikans enslaved to British and French plantation masters on the island to revolt with the intention on establishing a Black Republic like Haiti (Fendon’s words). This rebellion lasted until June 1796 and succeeded in controlling ¾ of the island during that period. The British and its European allies seeking to crush all of the Afrikan and Indigenous revolts during the 1790’s eventually crushed the Fendon revolt. But, its legacy endured and was referenced by Pan-Afrikan revolutionaries well into the 20th century.
