CITY OF CHICAGO TREASURER STEPHANIE D. NEELY RECIEVES “BANK ON CHICAGO” AWARD
Recognized for Helping Launch Campaign to Put 1000 families in Bank Accounts
On Saturday, September 7th, over 100 community reinvestment advocates will convene at Marquette Bank in Chicago’s West Englewood community to recognize the support of city of Chicago Treasurer Stephanie D. Neely and five Chicago area banks, including Marquette Bank, for collaborating with the Community Reinvestment Organizing Project and the P.A.C.T Project (Partnership Assisting Community Transformation) coalitions to put almost 1000 low-income and formerly unbanked families in savings and bank accounts. Treasurer Neely will be recognized for supporting a campaign of the coalition to bank unbanked families through the Bank on Chicago program, launched by her office.
The campaign, “EVERY CHILD NEEDS A SAVINGS ACCOUNTS….AND YOU NEED A CHECKING ACCOUNT” was launched on February 9th at an event held in the Legacy Room of urban radio station icon, WVON/Midway Broadcasting, with the launch participation of Citigroup, First Midwest Bank, Guaranty Bank, Marquette Bank and PNC Bank.
The Community Reinvestment Organizing Project and the P.A.C.T. Project, initiatives of the Monroe Foundation, a 23 year-old nonprofit community development advocacy organization, will jointly present its annual CRA Report Card, a community “grading” on how banks address community development investment, lending and banking needs in economically struggling communities.
Otis C Monroe, III, CEO of the Monroe Foundation, stated, “We have found that the most effective strategy to bank the unbanked in Chicago through partnerships such as Bank On Chicago, is to offer banking options that entire families can embrace. So far we have mobilized and connected over 500 families to mainstream financial services or education that will keep them away from the alternative financial services.
Paul A. Labonne, Vice President & CRA Officer for PNC Bank, as well as Chairman of the Board of the Monroe Foundation, added, ‘PNC Bank joined the campaign because establishing a collaborative relationship between PNC, our community partners, and Bank On Chicago is an effective way to inform our communities most in need of basic financial services opportunities and access to financial products and programs”.
The event is free and open to the public but registration is encouraged by emailing: omonroe@themonroefoundation.org or contacting Otis Monroe at (773) 315-9720.
