Chicago Police Torture victim Melvin Jones has died

We are sad to announce that Chicago Police torture survivor Melvin Jones has died. It was reported to the Campaign to End the Death Penalty through Chicago Community activists Urban Translator Wallace "Gator" Bradley that Jones died in Chicago yesterday (January 21st) morning from a heart attack. Jones have stated since his arrest in 1982 that when taken to area two violent crime unit he was tortured by Jon Burge and his subordinates. Jones complained that he was hit with a gun by Burge and later Burge returned to the room with a cigar homemade device that was later identified as the "Black Box" used to torture men in their genitals and other area's of their bodies to force them to confess to crimes many of the men have since been cleared of not committing. Jones never confessed to the crime, however spent years behind prison walls before being freed as the result of an Illinois Appellate court ruling. After released Jones spent years battling from an drug addiction and homelessness. Mark Clements a national activists against the death penalty and torture survivor believes that the city of Chicago have play political football with the lives of torture survivors and victims that remain to sit behind the walls of an Illinois State prison denied an hearing on their claim of torture. The Burge scandal has strain the city for more then 42 years where that some of his victims that were tortured remain uncompensated, unable to find employment, no medical care, no home, and denied psychological treatment since their incarceration and release.

Jones remain dedicated toward being a voice for torture victims as he appeared at rallied and court hearings on the behalf of men that remain incarcerated. Jones will be missed.

Jones, is a prime example why torture victims must be compensated and provided treatment from the abuse that they suffered at the hands of Burge and his subordinates. All African American and Latino men tortured in unthinkable ways by all white detectives. Today Burge is in a federal North Carolina prison receiving his full pension of more then 37 hundred dollars a month while some of his victims are barely able to survive in society. Just because some of their names have been cleared, most have experience difficulties finding employment, achieving vocational training, and carrying on with their daily life responsibilities. Chicago City council must enact the "Ordinance for Reparations for Chicago Police Torture Survivors".
