Momentum is rapidly building, as national lecturers, leaders, activists, organizations, and Blacks from across the country, descend on the luxurious, Black owned, Crowne Plaza Hotel in Marietta, Georgia, just minutes from the Atlanta Airport and Downtown Atlanta. According to National Black Power Conference convener, Attorney Malik Zulu Shabazz, National Chairman of the New Black Panther Party, The Black Power Conference is already a must attend event due to the diversity, history, brilliance, and tenacity of the leaders, teachers, artists, and organizers scheduled to gather and present Friday through Sunday, May 22nd through the 24th. This is both a long and overdue coming together of Black Muslims, Black Panthers, SCLC, Black Nationalists, Pan Africanists, Human and Civil Rights Activists from all over the Black nation. The Black Power Conference was first convened in Washington (1966), Newark (1967), and Philadelphia (1968). Variations were held thru the 1970’s and Kwame Ture (Stokely Carmichal), Imam Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin (H. Rap Brown), Adam Clayton Powell, Amiri Baraka (Leroi Jones), and Maulana Karanga (US) were all key figures. Now in 2009, the Black Power Movement, a broad based umbrella movement initiated by Attorney Shabazz and the New Black Panthers, seeks to address current ills and pressing issues, present within in the Black Community by inviting and uniting over 50 Black Organizations and leaders to this powerful weekend summit.Dr. Leonard Jeffries- City University New York and conference co-convener states, “We must have a clear analysis and definition of Black Power. As we see the rise of the Obama’s and the world eye focused on Black Peoples here in America, we must understand that power in the White House alone will not free us. We must have a plan, and this conference is a key piece in the puzzle to develop the structure to carry out such plan. This conference is historic. Not in 35 years have such a diverse group of nationalist national activists and gathered under a common theme and purpose."Organizers from 32 states, London, Carribean and Africa will be present May 22nd, 23rd and 24th in Atlanta, Georgia for this historic first Black Power Conference.
