Barbasol - A film in the making...

by: Ralph Scott

Greetings!

Let's start a conversation about fatherhood, and let's begin with a short film titled Barbasol by Ralph Scott.

We all know fatherhood, or the lack thereof is a complex issue. No matter what your father is or is not in your life, it doesn't matter; it is necessary to open up a discussion about it.

Barbasol is a film that will be used to open up the much needed discussion about father and son relationships.

Barbasol is a story about a man that desires to connect with his elderly father all the while his father is slipping into forgetfulness and dementia. He comes to realize that he should turn his attention to his own son so not to repeat the same mistakes his father may have made.

Kiara's goal as a filmmaker is to create art that accurately reflects the varied experiences of all Americans and to tell universal stories that introduce the world to a series of characters and cultures that have been commonly ignored by mainstream cinema. Her films also seek to open a dialogue that explores the current condition of womanhood.
Kiara hopes her work will help dissolve stereotypes and break paradigms that have corrupted the image of ethnic peoples. Through her production company, Cultivated Films, she provides an environment of nurturing and support where filmmakers from all demographics can develop and grow their individual voices.

I have been supporting, promoting and showcasing independent films for almost 20 years. I am now going to direct a short film called Barbasol. I have a particular passion for the telling and documentation of the African American experience. As I always say, Images are very important, so tell a good story.

So, it only stands to reason that when it comes time for me to make a film;
I will not only utilize the resources available to me, I will also give back to the filmmaking community.

We can always wait around for some "pie in the sky" project to come along to hire under-represented filmmakers; or we can create, develop, produce and support our own projects.

We can pool our own resources to ultimately change the scope of black entertainment. For this project, I will work with students from local inner city media programs. It is imperitive that we help develop the career building skills of our young media artist. They will in turn pass on the legacy and continue to tell OUR stories.

I am looking to align this film with various fatherhood and mentor organizations and programs. I want them to be able to utilize this film to open up the conversation about fathers and sons.

Mental illness is another topic this story touches on. Raising awareness in the Black community is crucial and we plan to change lives, one film at a time.

Presently we are raising the funds needed to properly make this film. If you are interested in this conversation and would like to contribute, please select the link below.
