“At this critical hour, when there is a lot of misinformation and distortions about what’s really happening in Libya, we are both honored and fortunate to have Cynthia McKinney with us to give a first- hand appreciation of what’s really going on,” said POP chairman Lawrence Hamm.
McKinney was very popular representing Georgia’s 4thCongressional district from 1992 to 2002 for being especially outspoken and critical of the former Bush administration’s policies on Iraq and domestically on their mishandling of ‘Hurricane Katrina.’ As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, she drew national attention for her grilling former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld over the administration’s questionable intelligence bases for armed intervention in Iraq.
McKinney strong critical stances drew the ire of conservative forces who staged a mass ‘crossover’ campaign, where legions of Republicans ‘crossed over’ into the Democratic primary of 2002 and voted for her more establishment friendly opponent Denise Majette. Protesting this scenario as a violations of The Voting Rights Act, she received no meaningful support from within her own party. She has since left the Democratic Party for the Green Party, and was its candidate for president in 2008.
McKinney continues to be an outspoken voice for peace and social justice. Recently, on a factfinding tour and humanitarian mission to Gaza, her ship, The Spirit of Humanity, was rammed by Israeli forces. All parties on her delegation were detained for several days with no interventions from the U.S. government. She has just returned from a similar mission in Libya and has related some bonechilling reports on the destructive force of the US-NATO bombing raids and the veracity of the government’s version of the facts.
McKinney is available for interviews. Media interested should call, Zayid Muhammad at 973 202 0745.
