‘DECADE OF THE DIASPORA’ TALKS BLACK ART
WITH MALIK AND KAREN SENEFERU!
On Thursday, October 29, Professor David Horne’s ‘Decade of the Diaspora’ continues its ongoing discussion about the state of Black Art with two engaging California based artists Malik and Karen Seneferu!
The show airs at 10pm EST on the Harambee Radio Network (www.harambeeradio.com).
Several weeks ago, ’Decades’ launched a discussion about the state of wellness of Black Art with a particular spotlight on Black Art in California. This show continues that discussion.
Malik Seneferu is arguably one of the most prolific Black artists of this period. Still quite a young man, Malik has crafted over 1000 pieces of original searing art! Painter, muralist, draughtsman, Malik’s work has taken him to South Africa, to Kenya, to Haiti. He is a vibrant fixture among Black artists in Southern California.
He is the founder of Áesthetic Ascension, an art social network.
Karen Seneferu is a marvelous teaching artist. Teaching English at Berkeley City College, Karen invented a creative, empowering approach to ‘artistically teaching English’ that she calls Take Flight, a culturally centered, critical thinking approach that allows students to overcome fear and anxiety in asserting themselves through language. She recently has also engendered a new art form that she calls Technokisi. An internally driven mirror art approach inspired by the Nkisi of the 16th century Congo basin, this artform uses new visual technology to challenge the subject to look internally at their external structure to find beauty, definition, meaning, place and healing. Recently, she was the co-curator of the incredible art exhibit ‘The Black Woman Is God,’ with Melorra Green, at the Sargent Johnson Gallery in San Francisco in 2013.
“From their smiles to their styles, this power couple are an important accessible and inspirational example of the wellness possibilities of Black Art at this very historical moment,” says Kymberly S. Newberry, the show’s co-host and Cultural Ambassador.
“We are delighted being words to have them with us to continue this important conversation and village reconstruction,” she finished.
