HOWARD STUDENTS MATTER
GIVE A WEEK OF COMMUNITY SERVICE TO NEWARK!
On Saturday, March 12th, as apart of a larger community based coalition effort. the Newark AntiViolence Coalition will welcome 50 students from Howard University who will spend a week in Newark performing a range of volunteer service!
The project is called Alternative Spring Break.
The students will be welcomed at the Newark City Hall Rotunda at 5pm by all of the host members of the coalition project.
Among the other coalition members are the Greater Newark Conservancy, the Newark YMWCA, the City of Newark and the Africana Institute of Essex County College.
From Monday, March 14 through Friday, March 18th, students will volunteer at Malcolm X Shabazz and Weequahic High Schools, the Newark YMWCA, Essex County College, the Greater Newark Conservancy and other community sites as well.
This year marks the projects second year in Newark.
The project was conceived by Howard University Alumni in Newark who want this generation of Howard students to appreciate the importance of volunteerism to their college experience and to the shaping one’s personal and professional life.
“It also gives these students a chance to impart to high school students the enormous value of a HBCU college education experience,” explained NAVC media advocate Zayid Muhammad, whose mother, the late Margaret Hill. went to Howard University.
Mayor Baraka, who will also meet with the students, his brother and Chief of Staff Amiri Baraka Jr. and their legendary father, the late Amiri Baraka, are all Howard University Alumni.
