R.I.P. Louis Reyes Rivera

"Power belongs to the People"

Greetings family,

I want to send a R.I.P. to Mr. Louis Reyes Rivera who was and is my friend, mentor, philosopher, historian, teacher, business partner etc... I've last spoken to you six days ago and will cherish all you have taught me. Our latest project and your last project "Street Smarts: An Anthology of Urban Survival Strategies" will be completed in your name the way you would have wanted it to be. You have changed my life, and I humbly have taken the torch you have given me to go out into the world to clean up history. I love you for life!

Louis Reyes Rivera (1945 - 2012):

Thank you great "dropper of knowledge". I am so honored to have sat next to you just 2 weeks ago. Thank you.      -    Agnes Johnson

Poet and essayist Louis Reyes Rivera, known as the Janitor of History, author of Scattered Scripture and other volumes of poetry as well as editor and co-editor of several anthologies, died today.
Considered a crucial link between the Latino and African American cultures, his influence as a writer and a teacher spanned many generations. In his honor, we reproduce one his most famous essays and a video of his own rendition of "Bullet Cry", his homage-poem to Malcolm X

Sorry to hear about the transition of Louis Rivera.

I first met him at the first HQ of UBUS Communications Systems, at 2286 7th Avenue in 1975...nothing happened as a result of that brief encounter in my office: but in 1977 Rich Bartee called Louis, myself, John Dahl ("Someplace Nice") to a meeting in the East Village: There we formalized the Wednesday night Baby Grand "Open" Readings called "The Poets Are Coming." And man did they ever come: every poet/writer of not graced our presentations in the back room of the Baby Grand: you name them in NYC, they came, including a young man who, as he stated to me 4-5 years ago, 'I am walking in the path that you blazed" but then changed his mind about having me as one of his panelist at that years
"Harlem Book Fair." Of course i understood his not wanting to have my history book about Reparations as part of his appeal to the mainstream audience that he was then bringing in...i said that to say that at The Baby Grand EVERYONE would be given a chance to recite 1 or 2 selections from their work if they put their name on the sheet...we paid for the space by taking up donations...Louis Rivera was the little man with the longest string of words that rhymed that i'd ever heard; words that always, always had a poignant message about The Black Liberation Struggle...Finally, i didn't know it at the time, but years after i moved from Harlem i was told that he was the Son-in-Law of John O. Killens...Louis Reyes Rivera will be missed... as Bartee used to tell us at one time, "Keep Looking up God is Looking" down..............................Khalifah [www.black-e-books.com
