LOUIS EDWARD KNIGHT DIED JANUARY 4, 2010

Louis Edward Knight was the second child of Isreal Knight and the Lady he married in 1930, Rosie Lee Anderson. In 1930, the first child, Isreal Lee was born. Then less then two years later, in 1932 the pride and joy of mother and father, the first of their six sons was born. He was given the name Louis Edward Knight. . . in 1949 Rosie Lee died, fifteen months after the birth of her ninth child since 1930. Louis was all of 17 years at the time. But as life would have it, his Mother had been preparing him to assume head of the brood of nine, since separating from Isreal in 1944.As he had during the ensuing years, on the 160 acres farm of his maternal Grand Father George Anderson, Louis continued to lead the operation of the farm – plowing, gathering and taking crops to market in the deep woods of Alabama – way back, back, back down near the Alabama River in Gosport, Alabama. This story is about how he was instrumental in the migration of the entire family from the hostile environs of Alabama to the relatively open, fantastic golden opportunities of New York City. Louis migrated from Alabama, found a job, sent money home and prepared the way for the arrival of his eight brothers and sister the following year. After serving a 2-year stint in the U. S. Army, and as the Head of household until the late teens of his brothers and Sisters, Louis married a wonderful Lady from Wilmington, North Carolina, Alice Mae Clark. Louis excelled as a Carpet Mechanic, later in his own business in Flooring and as a Night Club Partner/Owner of Club 371 in the Bronx, N.Y. He fathered four children, Cherly, Deborah, Louis Jr. and Melissa. He also fathered another son, Truston. After a remarkable life in The Big Apple, Louis and Alice moved south to Alice’s hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina after he retired. The book chronicles, not just the story about Louis, but also the remarkable success he enjoyed as the surrogate father for almost equally successful siblings, and his own children. It is an inspiring book or overcoming each challenge – including the steep obstacles necessary to keep the family together, as family.
