Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba has died.
chokweLumumba_bio.jpgHe was admitted to St. Dominic Hospital Tuesday morning with chest pains.
Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart says he was pronounced dead around 4:55 p.m.
Lumumba won the Mayor's office in June 4, 2013, pulling 86% of the vote and defeating independent candidates Francis P. Smith, Jr. , Richard C. Williams and Cornelius Griggs.
Mayor Lumumba was born August 2, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan. He is the second of eight children born to Lucien and Priscilla Francis Taliaferro.
Mayor Lumumba earned his Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

He later finished first in his law school freshman class before graduating cum laude from Wayne State University Law School.

Prior to his election as Mayor, Mr. Lumumba served as Jackson City Councilman for Ward 2.
Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant released this statement:

"Deborah and I are shocked and saddened by the news of Mayor Lumumba's passing and are praying for his loved ones. Just a short time ago, I had the opportunity to join the mayor in a church pew as we welcomed a new development to the city. His enthusiasm for Jackson will be deeply missed."

  • MXCC HONORS MAYOR CHOKWE LUMUMBA UPON HIS PASSING!

The Malcolm X Commemoration Committee wishes to extend its deepest condolences to the family of our beloved comrade and warrior, Chokwe Lumumba!
We were stunned to silence when we learned of Chokwe’s sudden passing. He has been so strong on his walk for us for so long, the mere idea of him leaving us so suddenly was just unfathomable!
Chokwe was truly one of our model leaders and example. He is arguably that lawyer, that brash, fearless, articulate people’s lawyer, that Malcolm always wanted to be.
Although he was hardly ever mentioned in the circle of so-called celebrity Black leaders, Chokwe earned his beloved reputation, one proudly above reproach and compromise thankfully, in the trenches with our people!
With his talent, skills, gifts and credentials, Chokwe could have easily developed and lived a comfortable bourgeouis life. Instead, he dared to honor our struggle, to honor Malcolm’s legacy taking that professional and political step as a revolutionary lawyer and organizer!
We can easily say that Chokwe, formed by the politics of the 1960s, anchored by Malcolm’s contributions, emerged as the first son or star of the New Afrikan Independence Movement. Clearly, for quite sometime, he has always been our movement’s first voice, our first face and in battle in the legal arena, our first officer, defending our freedom fighters targeted by the sinister beast of COINTELPRO Repression!
He also created new vehicles to keep the work moving. The New Afrikan People’s Organization and the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, breathed fresh blood and life into our larger movement in ways we can still tangibly see and be proud of! Here, in New York, under the leadership of his comrades Ahmed Obafemi and Sanovia Muhammad, it was NAPO and MXGM that spearheaded the drive to have Lenox Avenue renamed Malcolm X Boulevard in Harlem. In Brooklyn, as well as several other cities, MXGM chapters, like the Brooklyn chapter held down by Monifa and Lumumba Bandele, have not only carried on the work, but have also brought another generation forward with the work.
When Chokwe decided to delve into electorial politics, he found an original way to do so. He quietly and gracefully became a personal embodiment of the Ballot Or The Bullet! As we approach the 50th anniversary of that seminal practical message of revolutionary empowerment in April, perhaps more of us need to examine in serious terms what he was doing with that effort and do more organizing along those guidelines!
Finally, let the record clearly reflect that at no time in his committed life did this warrior ever take a backwards step. So at this critical hour, where we are all tested by the challenge of his new absence, neither should we! So we say ‘Free The Land! Long live Chokwe Lumumba! Carry on the tradition!’

  • THE PEOPLE’S ORGANIZATION FOR PROGRESS
    APPLAUDS THE LATE CHOKWE LUMUMBA
    MAYOR OF JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI

The People’s Organization for Progress wishes to extend its most heartfelt condolences to the Lumumba in the wake of the sudden passing of our dear friend, brother and comrade Chokwe Lumumba!
Like so many who knew and loved Chokwe we rejoiced at his recent victory and becoming Mayor of Jackson. Yet like so many who knew and loved Chokwe over the years, we applauded this as the culmination of a long life totally committed to struggle.
We salute everything our brother did leading up to that historic moment, from having been a people’s lawyer, defending our people when they came under dangerous fire from the state, to organizing students in the north and in the south and to creating new paradigms to organize!  Chokwe has been on the battlefield for justice doing these things 40 over years, all before his relatively recent foray into the electorial arena and his historic election!
We pray that the recent organizing paradigms he set in motion, the neighborhood people’s assemblies, stay together and continue the work of the people, the people working to together to transform their own community, both with the ballot and with their own hands united! We can think of no better way to honor our friend, our brother and our comrade than to carry on the work!

              We say ‘Chokwe Lumumba! Presente!’
              Power to the people!

    (February 25, 2014)

    Assalaamu Alaikum (Greetings of Peace):

It is with sadness that I pass on the report (below) regarding the passing of Chokwe Lumumba, a former human rights activist who (from all that I've heard about him through mutual friends and associates) did not lose his integrity once he decided to go into politics- POLITRICS for far too many of its practitioners.

(Some of our readers may recall a piece we released not too long ago about the Scott sisters of Mississippi - a tragic imprisonment case for which Lumumba facilitated a positive, but long overdue, outcome. His principled involvement in that case reflected one measure of the man. May his good works follow him to the grave and be a benefit for him on the day he meets his Lord. May ALLAH grant solace and patience to the family and friends who now bear his loss.)

May ALLAH also have mercy upon the recently departed souls, Sr. Nazmoon Khan (mother of Imam Faisal Khan of Silver Spring, MD) and Ali Barzinji (son of Dr. Jamal Barzinji of IIIT). And may ALLAH fortify and grant patience to all of their loved ones as well. Ameen.

The International Mobilization for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui

We are now in countdown mode for the international mobilization for our sister Aafia. All throughout the month of March there will be actions in Pakistan (and in a number of other countries) for this wrongfully held political prisoner. By this time next week I personally hope to be on the ground in Pakistan, and from there to a number of other countries, to add my voice to the international call for Aafia's release and repatriation.

On a final note, I've received a number of inquiries regarding my recent Black History Month address on "The African American Human Rights Struggle, Thru the Prism of Islam."
Insha'Allah, I will send out a summary of that presentation tomorrow.

    Brothers and Sisters,
Shocking news is spreading across internet web pages, social media sites and broadcast outlets:  has passed away.
Words cannot express what his lifework and steadfast example has meant to the Global Progressive Movement. His commitment, especially, to the New Afrikan Independence Movement is a tribute and testament to the uncompromising love he had for his people and the human family.
Details on his passing are forthcoming...
