[The following is a profile from a book called Real Afro-American History; published in 1975]Isreal Lee Knight-Hills was a twentieth century Black heroine who inherited the Spiritual Legacy of Harriet Tubman, and other captive African people in the United States of America. Their commitment to the total uplift of their own people was realized through their ability to help many escape from the dreg of one part of the oppressive system to another part that offered less restrictions to their life in this part of existence. She was born on December 27, in Gosport, Alabama in 1930. She died in November 21, 1974.Isa Lee, as she is commonly referred to, was not unlike thousands of African women in America before - and today. At age 18 she found herself the eldest in house of eight children, none her own, all younger than she. At that time they lived in a part of America that has traditionally been in the forefront in the brutal oppression of African people, the state of Alabama. She was aided by her oldest brother Louis E. Knight, who came ahead to pave the way, she succeeded in bringing the seven immediate members of her family to New York City - looking to the North as a place to secure the freedom that all humanity hungers for.As Harriet Tubman before her, she was not satisfied in finding more freedom for herself and family, she also had a direct and indirect hand in helping an estimated 500 others come to New York City. it didn't end there, she provided a place for the 'direct' ones to stay, and fed them from the food of her family until they could find jobs to provide for themselves. And while families with substantial more material things to care for their children are of epidemic proportions, her sibling became entrepreneurial and skilled craftsmen and women. However, she was heard to say to someone who commended her on this feat: "If i had a little more money i would have some doctors and lawyers."
