Throughout the Eighties, in the height of the struggle against police and immigration repression of our community, a litmus-test question that the Media would pose was: Does Dudley Laws speak for you? Our Black middle-class would stumble on a response; but working class folk readily identified with Dudley Laws. Dudley spoke for me, and more. He picketed for me, led marches for me, went to jail for me, went to Queen's Park and Parliament Hill for me. Read his poems and sang: “By the Rivers of Babylon” for me. And gave countless speeches for me. And for you. And for us who believe in the struggle for equal dignity for all, from prisoner to parliamentarian. He was a humble man, a self educated man who Like Rosa Parks, showed that you don't have to be prime minister, politician or pope to improve the lot of all and make a better world.
