Dr. Barbara Ann Teer June 18, 1937 - July 20, 2008

Dr. Barbara Ann Teer - Founder and CEO Dr. Barbara Ann Teer came to Harlem in 1968 leaving behind a lucrative show business career. Her commitment was to maintain and perpetuate the richness and beauty inherent in the form, feeling and cultural traditions of African-American lifestyle. In 1983, Dr. Teer expanded the purpose and vision of the National Black Theatre by purchasing a city block front of property on the major business corridor of 125th Street in Central Harlem. In May of 1994, she received an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Law from the University of Rochester, New York. In May of 1995, she received her second Honorary Doctorate Degree of Humane Letters from the University of Southern Illinois. Dr. Teer graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Dance Education from the University of Illinois in Urbana, Illinois. More than 200 articles, books and videos document the contributions and accomplishments of Dr. Teer's work in the public sector. She is included in Who's Who in America and Who's Who Worldwide recognizing her as a global business leader. In addition, she has received more than 40 awards and citations. Dr. Teer is the mother of two children. Former New York State Governor Mario Cuomo and Vincent Tese acknowledged Dr. Teer as “one of New York State’s greatest cultural treasures and resources and a cornerstone for the revitalization of 125th Street.” Former President Ronald Reagan when announcing the National Endowmen for the Arts’ Challenge Grant Awards said, “The National Black Theatre is one of the sixty-three most important Arts Institutions in America.
