Mary Ellen Johnson joins the ancestors

Mary Ellen Johnson was born December 30, 1928 to the late Robert and Sarah McVay in Wheeler, Alabama. She was blessed with two older brothers, Robert and Thomas McVay, who preceded her in death. She confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and united with the Caanan Baptist Church in Alabama. Mary left Alabama upon completing Cortland Colored High School to attend Nursing School in Kentucky. Ilmust followed her to Kentucky and asked for her hand in marriage. They returned to Alabama and shortly thereafter, relocated to Detroit, Michigan. Through their ordained union, three lovely daughters were born, Marva, Patricia and Krystal who preceded her in death. Being a “care-giver” was innate for Mary. This was one of many ways that she gave constantly of herself. She cared for her mother, step-father, uncles, aunt and brother-in-law until their death. Mary was a master chef and created dishes at Mr. Mikes for many years. Her family and friends relished her cooking. She later worked for the Detroit Public Schools at Myra Jones Elementary School as a School Service Assistant. In this position, she was active in developing programs that enhanced community involvement in the school. Later, she worked for Wayne County in the Department of Treasure. Mary worked in this department as a clerk until her retirement. Mary joined Zion Hope Missionary Baptist Church early in life where she was a very active member. Mary’s talents and creativity were far-reaching. This was evident in her organizational and administrative skills. She was the found and general chairperson of the Scholarship Foundation, Church Library, Courtesy Committee and the Wednesday Morning Bible Study. She served as president of the Voices of Zion, Inspirational Choir and Young at Heart Ministry. Mary held membership in the BME State Congress, Zion Hope Missionary Society, Interdenominational Christian Women in White, Zion Hope Nurses Guild, Detroit Up-lift, Deacon and Trustees Wives. She also served as Advisor for the International Youth District. Annually she hosted the Slavery to Freedom Breakfast, church clothing drive and the senior cook-out hosted at her home. She also facilitated securing the church bus and parking lot. Mary leaves to cherish her loving memories her devoted husband, Ilmust Johnson, her two daughters, Marva Johnson and Patricia Jackson. Four grandchildren; Terron, Jaida, Jennifer and Jerrod. FROM: The Michigan Citizen
