Our Friend and Leader in the struggle for Justice and Self-Determination, Mwalimu Seyoum Joe Lewis, has made his transition to be with the ancestors. As his co-worker and friend Angela Winfrey said, "there is a Giant up in Heaven". We all know that an undercurrent of Black leadership has been making sacrifices and making positive change happen at the grassroots of our community and across our City for many decades and that Mwalimu Seyoum is one of these leaders. A son of Detroit and the powerful movement for Black Liberation in the city, Seyoum came to Atlanta in the 1970s with a core group of 30 to build the now historic Shrine of the Black Madonna in the West End. Through his work with the Shrine he was central to building community and consciousness in the West End and throughout Atlanta. Seyoum has contributed to the creation of several well-known community organizations and institutions as station manager for WRFG and as an organizer/core trainer in the Southeast Regional Office of The People's Institute for Survival & Beyond. Mwalimu Seyoum's work transcended any organization or geographic location, as he always reminded us that like his mentor, Jaramogi always said, "if it was for the advancement of Black people he was down with it!" Seyoum has worked tirelessly to build leadership and consciousness with young people and adults, and is always on call to lend a hand in any project that will advance the liberation of all oppressed people saying often, "salvation is a collective experience." He is a community organizer in the best of our historic tradition. His legacy of uncompromising strength & love will be our fuel to keep his fire of Justice, Deep Love of the People, and Freedom burning. We will send out more news about when and where we will celebrate and give thanks for his life and the many blessings it brought to our lives. There will be a memorial altar over the next two days at the offices of the Georgia Coalition on Hunger so please feel free to stop by, leave something, or simply give thanks for the life of Mwalimu Seyoum Lewis. In lieu of flowers please make donations to his family to support the planning of his homegoing. Checks can be made to: Gloria Jackson Lewis 2712 Neptune Place Decatur, GA 30034 With great respect and many thanks, Georgia Coalition on Hunger, Project South, The People's Institute Southeast Regional Office ----------------------------------------------------------------- For all your black news www.nationalblackagendaonline.com
