The mining community of Middelburg, South Africa, population 88,000, has a high crime rate and an even higher rate of drug abuse.

346165?max=1600Volunteers from the Church of Scientology Pretoria and the Middelburg, South Africa, chapter of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World have taken on the challenge of tackling crime and drugs in this crime-ridden town.

Volunteers from the Church of Scientology Pretoria have teamed up with the local chapter of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World—Nazareth Against Drug Abuse—to reach out to Phumalela Secondary School students who are about to enroll in college or university. They are giving them copies of The Way to Happiness to ensure they have a moral code that will help them succeed in the years ahead.

The Way to Happiness is a nonreligious moral code written by L. Ron Hubbard. It is based entirely on common sense. Anyone can use The Way to Happiness to lead a better life.

Encouraged by the news that drug related crime in Middelburg has decreased by 10 percent over the past year since the Nazareth Against Drug Abuse team has been active in drug prevention, the volunteers decided to tackle the underlying cause of crime—morality—to really make a difference in the town. This is why they have added The Way to Happiness to their arsenal.

"By handing out copies of The Way to Happiness to Middelburg matriculates we hope to set off a chain reaction," said Maurithus Meiring, Director of Special Affairs of the Church of Scientology Pretoria. "When you hand the booklet to people, you not only affect their lives, because those people hand copies of the booklet to their friends and family and they pass it on. And as it keeps flowing outward in the society, the entire culture is uplifted."

The Way to Happiness is available in 112 languages, with some 115 million copies distributed in 186 nations. The campaign to distribute the book has been embraced by more than 257,000 groups and individuals. The Way to Happiness holds the Guinness World Record as the single most-translated nonreligious book and it fills the moral vacuum in an increasingly materialistic society.

Leaders Unite to Address South Africa's Future

346164?max=1600Foundation for a Drug-Free World invited to South Africa SEFSA Leaders Summit. Drug prevention is an essential factor in a strong future for the country

When Executive Director of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World South Africa Carmen Margro heard of the 2-day Inaugural SEFSA (Socio-Economic Future of South Africa) Leaders Summit to be held in Johannesburg March 11 -12 she decided she had to ensure the work of the Foundation was represented in the program. It seems Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, who called the summit, agreed: He sent her an invitation to attend as one of the 150 most influential leaders of the country.

Archbishop Makgoba called these leaders together to address practical solutions to the deepening socio-economic crisis facing the nation.

The purpose of the SEFA initiative was to create a safe and conducive platform for constructive dialogue and consensus-building, with particular reference to what is needed to secure the socio-economic future of South Africa. The SEFSA initiative is faith-based and civil society-driven, based on the growing consensus that the country needs a renewed level of faith and optimism to build a better future.

The Foundation's presence in the summit was vital: Drug addiction takes its toll on the economy and so much of South Africa's crime is drug-related. The drug epidemic impacts every aspect of the social spectrum.

Over the past two years, Drug-Free World Africa volunteers have distributed 500,000 The Truth About Drugs booklets, delivered more than 700 lectures and events and built a network of 34 drug education teams in South Africa. They also reach more than 100,000 people with their drug prevention message through social media each month.

The Church of Scientology supports the Foundation for a Drug-Free World.  Scientologists on six continents work in their communities throughout the year to empower others with the truth about drugs. The Church and its members are dedicated to eradicating drug abuse through education and prevention campaigns.
