About the THEME

Poverty and food insecurity is a threat to Afrikan development. People’s movement from the rural areas to the urban place, searching for greener pastures, has made people lose their knowledge of indigenous/organic methods of growing foods and preserving them. People are now depending on supermarkets for supply, which is expensive and unhealthy. How can people start their small gardens again, especially in urban places where there is limited space for growing plants? What impact will it have on the Afrikan family/community if people can produce their own food? And how does this relate to our broader struggle for complete liberation?

About the presenter

Brother Itumeleng Pooe is a social entrepreneur who is passionate about food sovereignty, community development and transforming Afrikan socio-political realities. For many years he has been one of the dedicated innovators behind the GreenHouse Project in Joubert Park, Johannesburg.
