About the THEME
It is said that the most important institution within Afrikan culture is
the FAMILY. Yet, family seems to have become our weakest link. We struggle
with communication, inter-generational gaps, broken relationships, issues
of unspoken pain, secrets, lies and disloyalty. Some of us are marked by
scars from our families that we never heal from. Some of us profess to be
about love, yet we keep hurting those close to us.

Our family struggles do not take place in a vacuum. Our family structures
are heavily impacted on by historical, economical and socio-cultural
oppression. We live on a continent that has yet to experience a full sense
of liberation. Some of us apply analysis and remedies for Afrika strictly
through political doctrines – and fail to connect them with our everyday
struggles. As we take note of May as Afrika Liberation Month, we ask: How
do we merge the struggle for Afrikan freedom with the need for powerful
Afrikan families?

About the PRESENTER
This time, Baba Buntu will lead the discussion. He is a Pan-Afrikan
activist scholar, consultant, educator and writer with more than 25 years
of experience in youth- and community work. He is the founding director of
eBukhosini Solutions and Founder of SHABAKA – Men of Afrika. His focus is
on Afrikology, Black Consciousness, Indigenous Knowledge Systems,
Decolonial Thought and Liberating strategies for empowering Afrikan youth,
families and communities.
