The model provides a blueprint for additional Uncle Remus SFC corporate stores based on the organization’s aggressive regional expansion plan. Scheduled to open in February 2015, the model eatery, which brings new jobs to the community, exceeds the traditional notion of a small take-out establishment.
The project is financed by the Chicago Community Loan Fund (CCLF), a nonprofit organization that provides flexible and affordable financing and technical assistance for community economic development initiatives.
“Our goal is to help create jobs and promote business development and entrepreneurship in the communities we serve. We are excited about the opportunity to help a local African-American business expand while creating 23 new jobs at the new facility,” said Calvin Holmes, CCLF president.
“I am truly excited to expand the brand to the South Side of Chicago and I am so grateful for the opportunity given to me by Chicago Community Loan Fund and Quad Communities Development Corporation. Having their support and belief in me helps solidify and add another layer of credibility to our brand,” said Uncle Remus CEO Charmaine V. Rickette.
Quad Communities Development Corporation (QCDC) was a key South Side player in bringing the new project to fruition by helping facilitate its funding.
According to Rickette, the new restaurant will include a full dining room for the full dine-in experience.
“We are going to enhance the neighborhood carryout experience in our model store with a new look and feel, more dining space, and a new healthy rotisserie chicken option to complement our saucy fried recipe,” she said.
In addition, customers will be able to order online and via their smart phones through the new Uncle Remus smart phone app.
“Our model restaurant provides more convenience through technology and puts us on par with any restaurant, large or small.” said Rickette.
“As an African-American business owner, I strive to give the customers a quality product that is comparable to that of national restaurant chains. I’m proud to serve my community with this level of excellence,” Rickette said.
“We knew right away that Uncle Remus Chicken was a business we wanted to support because opportunities for African-American business owners to expand store units are few and far between. Once Charmaine presented her vision and concept, we were hooked!,” said Bernita Johnson-Gabriel, executive director, QCDC.
Rickette and her team were referred to QCDC by Chicagoan Everett Rand. QCDC serves the South Side communities of North Kenwood, Oakland, Douglas and Grand Boulevard. Its mission is to improve the quality of life and economic strength of its neighborhoods by supporting private development and providing technical assistance to small businesses.
QCDC also assisted Uncle Remus with job placement. The new restaurant will create 23 job opportunities, including six full-time positions. New employees will work as cooks, cashiers, line workers and processors.
Through QCDC’s affiliation with 741 Collaborative, which brings together several workforce development organizations in the Mid-South area, pre-screened and pre-qualified applicants from the community are were referred for positions with Uncle Remus Chicken.
Uncle Remus Chicken accepted applications from the community Dec. 10th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at 747 E. 47th St. (on Cottage Grove across from McDonald’s.)
The grand opening of the new restaurant is scheduled in February.
