Right now, “Mayor 1%” governs on an agenda that only works for the rich and that oppresses Black and Latino communities in Chicago. He’s been able to do that because there aren’t enough progressive voices on the city council to stand up to him. 

But last night that all changed.  Reclaim Chicago has elected a progressive champion to the city council and forced four Emanuel allies into runoff elections!

Reclaim Chicago volunteers spent 4,980 hours talking to voters to counter $8,168,898 dollars spent by the big corporations and the 1%. [1]

Our people power helped elect Carlos Rosa in the 35th ward. His opponent, Rey Colón, had voted with Emanuel on almost every bill. Carlos solidified his plans to run for office at National People’s Action Campaign’s training last year. From the very beginning, he built his campaign on a foundation of people-based, grassroots organizing. He won with 66% of the vote and his victory is a testament to the power of organized communities.

Reclaim Chicago also forced three runoffs with Emanuel allies. On April 7th, Tim Meegan will take on Deb Mell in the 33rd ward, Tara Stamps will go up against Emma Mitts in the 37th and Amy Crawford will challenge James Cappleman in the 46th.  Victories in these races, together with Carlos’ win and the existing progressive caucus, could make a positive difference in how Chicago is governed.
