'SOULS TO THE POLLS' COORDINATOR 'LIVID' AT FIORETTI FOR COPYING THEIR GOTV SLOGAN- BATTLE FOR THE BLACK VOTE HEATS UP February 7, 2015 at 4:49pm ‘SOULS TO THE POLLS’ coordinator “livid” at Fioretti for copying their GOTV slogan Says ‘Cease and desist,’ but Fioretti says no way By Chinta Strausberg Saying she is “livid,” Jaquie Algee, coordinator for the “Souls to the Polls” Get Out The Vote (GOTV) early voter campaign Saturday demanded that mayoral candidate Bob Fioretti “cease and desist” using the “Souls to the Polls” slogan on his flyer because it sends mixed messages to voters. With the battle for the black vote revving up, Algee said what Fioretti is doing “is confusing,” “We did this program for the November election, and we are doing it again for the February24th election. The pastor’s working with me are in accord with this non-partisan campaign. “What Fioretti has done is to put out a confusing message to the public. It can be perceived as the “Souls to the Polls” is in supporting of him when we are a non-partisan coalition supporting issues that impact our community,” she explained. “I want Fioretti to cease and desist using the slogan “Souls to the Polls.” Vote for him if you wish but we want him to cease and desist” using this slogan. “ Souls to the Polls was about raising minimum wage during the November election and now it is about jobs, affordable housing, reformative justice and mass incarceration. We want to elect people about those issues,” Algee said. Fioretti’s flyer bears huge letters saying, “SOULS TO THE POLLS FOR BOB FIORETTI. “In order to ensure that your voices are heard and we show the City of Chicago how large the level of support for this movement is, the Bob Fioretti campaign will be coordinating a “SOULS TO THE POLLS” ON Sunday, February 15th, 2015.” That is the same day Algee’s coalition is going to the churches with their “Souls to the Polls” campaign. They will have buses where they will take members to the nearest voting polls and bring them back to church. Fioretti’s flyer adds: “If you are interested in voting during the designated “SOULS TO THE POLLS,” give your name to your pastor and the Bob Fioretti Campaign will coordinate with each church representative to schedule a pick up time and location for all the members. We will pick up and return each early voter to your respective church.” It then gives the contact name and number for his “SOULS TO THE POLLS”representative. When contacted, Marcus Ferrell, campaign manager for Fioretti, said, “The origin of ‘Souls to the Polls’ came long before their campaign. It began 15-years ago. We are not trying to confuse the voters. “Souls to the Polls” has been used in Chicago since the 1990’s. Obama used it and Gov. Rauner and Gov. Quinn used it. We are just trying to turn out our vote. I have heard multiple churches not associated with that coalition using this slogan. We do not think we are trying to confuse voters with a slogan that has been used for the past 20-years.” “We also respect their efforts and hope they turn out as many voters as they can to help defeat Rahm Emanuel,” Ferrell said.
