Veteran Activist and Black Wall Street Economic Advocacy group leader statement on Mayoral appointment of Kurt Summers, Jr as new Chicago City Treasurer
As an activist, Chairman of National Black Wall Street Chicago; AND as a Kappa Man I want to congratulate my Kappa brother Kurt Summers Jr on his appointment by Mayor Emanuel as Interim Chicago City Treasurer to replace retiring City Treasurer Stephanie D. Neely. In addition to being a Kappa brother, Summers is also the grandson of legendary Black political activist Sam Patch, one of the many elders I learned from as a youth when his grandfather was a close aide to former Mayor Harold Washington.
National Black Wall Street Chicago, a 501C3 Black economic advocacy organization is reaching out to the new Interim City Treasurer to visit our organization Thursday November 20th for a community outreach luncheon event to help introduce him to our organization and many community organization allies who have had a good relationship with outgoing City Treasurer Neely. Our organization, along with The Monroe Foundation's Community Reinvestment Organizing Project successfully worked with Treasurer Neely on a number of projects, most significantly The BANK ON CHICAGO program that helped bringing access to capital and banking services to low income communities and we would like to continue that relationship with the new City Treasurer.
