News analysis by veteran political activist, with over 40 years in public service on local, state, and national levels and one that the Rev. Al Sharpton calls Mark Allen "one of Chicago's legendary political activists and one of the best organizers of his generation"
Mayor Emanuel Cannot Police Poverty, Desperate economic conditions need desperate economic answers versus policing
My thanks to some of my allied leaders like Phillip Jackson and Ira J. Acree who share my view that this city ABSOLUTELY CANNOT solve its urban ills with more POLICING and no equal address on POVERTY!! I hate to say it, but those who have convinced the Mayor that his major address on violence will create even more problems for the Mayor once people REALIZE that the Mayors Public Safety speech will have ABSOLUTELY NO IMMEDIATE impact on the people and conditions that will CONTINUE to create senseless violence!!! We need more CRITICAL THINKERS over these SYMBOLIC answers.
The timetable for this new policing deployment wont be start until January 2017 and not complete until 2018, so some us need to continue to share our urgent message to the Mayor to AMEND his speech the IMMEDIATELY INCLUDE new community RESOURCES to address the socially and mentally ill that are GROWING by the day in the community and the desperate POVERTY issues!! No amount of police deployment can POLICE POVERTY!!!! Once again I am SO SAD at those various leaders who have convinced Mayor Emanuel on how our people need another TOUGH ON CRIME speech versus getting TOUGH ON POVERTY that needs immediate hands on RESOURCES.
The South and westsides of Chicago are full of thousands and thousands of socially and mentally ill and growing by the day with NO RESOURCES to address it, and those disconnected continue to seek the gang, drug, and other illegal street economies to resolve their desperate economic conditions - even though it results in continued senseless violence and death! More police deployment simply means more police to simply chase and arrest the disconnected who will continue the violence. Cannot arrest our way out of poverty either.
So thanks again that we have some "OPERATIONAL UNITY" with people like Phillip Jackson, Rev. Ira Acree and others who are still sharing a message to The Mayor and his advisors his address MUST INCLUDE an immediate public commitment to local RESOURCES that people can SEE in the community versus this long term commitment to new policing. Desperate ECONOMIC CONDITIONS must have desperate ECONOMIC versus policing answers!!! The majority of the people involved in the criminal justice system are there because they are caught up in something illegal trying to solve their ECONOMIC problems and there is NO AMOUNT of new police deployment that solves the desperate ECONOMIC conditions and will CONTINUE to foster senseless violence, before, during, and after the Mayor's speech thats absent of immediate RESOURCES in the streets!
