Sneed is told a private internal poll commissioned citywide late last week by the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art gives them a big thumbs-up in the lakeside location brouhaha with Friends of the Parks.
A Lucas Museum source tells Sneed: “We wanted to know how people really felt about the city’s offer of the two proposed museum sites. And it showed strong support across racial and neighborhood lines.”
“The battle between the city, who wants the museum on the lake, and Friends of the Parks, who don’t — have caused many more people to take positive notice since our survey last month,” the Lucas Museum source said.
The source claims 600 Chicagoans were polled citywide between May 5-7 by the firm of Gerstein, Bocian & Agne Strategies; and that three out of four people polled supported the museum, which will house the legacy of “Star Wars” genius George Lucas.
OPINION
“Conducted by cellphone and landline, both the original museum campus site and the McCormick Place site had majority support, but the most favorable site was the original site,” according to the source.
Their polling showed:
• Almost three in every four Chicagoans (73 percent) felt the Lucas Museum should be built in Chicago.
• 11 percent said it should not be built here.
• The museum sites showed solid support with white residents (71 percent) as well as African-Americans (77 percent) and Hispanics (77 percent).
• 81 percent of all Chicagoans say they would be either “very” or “somewhat” likely to visit the museum.
• “Just 34 percent support the Friends of the Parks lawsuit, while a majority (54 percent) do not,” said the source . . . who added: “Opposition is most intense among African-Americans (62 percent oppose).”
Stay tuned.
