FORMER CONGRESSMAN JESSE JACKSON JR WELCOME HOME MESSAGE AND PUBLIC CHALLENGE
TO PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA
TO PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA
Mr. President. We welcome you home, for your final remarks that puts an exclamation point on an extraordinary and historic presidency. With the few waning days of your presidency, that which inspired you to public-service, remains a troubling problem on the southside and west of Chicago and throughout our country.
Since the inception of this nation we have longed for your DNA and flesh and bone to be in the presidency. In a real sense, for the errors of our ways we have longed for a man, of us, for us, and by us, to forgive us, on earth for the errors of our ways. You know us better than most.
You understand the barrios, the trailer parks, reservations and the ghettos of our nation. These are the men and women whose presence is overwhelming in the nations prison system. You have witnessed and studied the unfairness of forgiveness from the government of the United States, for those of us who have done time. We pray and hope that the dreams of your father become the dreams of our fathers. We ask you to forgive us all. With the language that Ford used to forgive Nixon. Set us free. From a government that never leaves our lives. Set the captives free. Show the American people the power of emancipation. Show the American people how serious we were when we all entered public life. Show the American people and the world that America is different than the America that Mr. Trump sees.
There are 13 days left before the next President Donald Trump will take 8 more years to consider the worthiness of what remains of the lives of our fathers, sons, daughters, and mothers. If President Trump doesn't consider them, it will likely take another 4 to 8 years for his successor, that's 16 more years until absolution. Criminal justice reform from this right wing reactionary congress is a cruel hoax that will never happen. It's the same congress that ignored your Supreme Court nominee.
Mr. Trump's rhetoric has raised anxiety, his unpredictability has led us to believe he is not afraid to hit the nuclear button. Mr. President you have the power to reduce the pressure on the nation. Hit the love and forgiveness button.
Non- forgiveness and constant monitoring of debt paid people, comes at an economic and political cost to the American people. It is not too late to be the greatest Christian and morally guided President ever. Give them free!
I am so grateful to the men and women that I met on this journey, they changed me. The line for forgiveness is long and I am at it's rear. I was thrown in the hole, placed in the special housing unit, SHU, for helping men, who could not read or write, fill out the very complicated pardon/ clemency application form. The prison authorities said I was being disruptive. I cannot get it out of my head.
One of prisons great lessons is to never cut in line. Only violence can occur when we prioritize our lives over our neighbors. We all must wait our turn. The least fortunate must come first. I lead from the rear. Dr. Thurman and Dr. Obery Hendricks taught and teach the importance of moral authority.
I also use this opportunity to educate people. Clemency does not apply to people who have paid their debt. Only the pardon power does. There is a difference. Clemency is a reprieve. The pardon power is the power to forgive under the Constitution, like Nixon got, and Sec. Hillary Clinton and General Petraeus need. It is The power of the people to allow a person a second chance. That's why it is in the Constitution. Remember, We the People? Once a person pays their debt, they are suppose to get a receipt, that says debt paid! This is true in most transactions and the Founders Fathers of our country understood this.
Since the civil war, it is the advent of the two party system, i.e. the Democrats and the Republicans, who have turned constitutional forgiveness into an insider's game. If it is in the Constitution it belongs to all of us, that's why it is in the people's Constitution. Some of us have even died to protect this process, the process of human absolution on earth. Some have even given "the last full measure of their devotion" on fields of battle to protect this process. When we err and then pay our debts, it is the human absolution process of the great Deist, a man who believed in one God, from Nazareth that was placed there and put there by the Founders of our country, to be preserved by the people for all time, and it was placed there for every generation. It was not placed there to forgive turkeys.
We elect a person of great character to distribute mercy, forgiveness and grace. It is in the Constitution and has an affirmative commandment from the founders. "He SHALL grant reprieves and pardons." The Founders did not leave the presidency and future presidents much room. It has never been that way in practice. Earthly forgiveness is for everybody! This is what we will change.
Forgiveness for everybody, 'on earth as it is in heaven.' I hope to write this as the beginning chapter of my new life.
Mr. President, break the bond that Democrats and Republicans have held on the forgiveness of the American people for 150 years. Our fathers, brothers and sisters, mothers sons and daughters, deserve no less. Forgiveness and the human absolution process, belongs to all men. This government was so conceived under this principle. Please give our country "a new birth of freedom" and "Let freedom ring."
Thank you for your service. With Great Respect,
Jesse Jackson Jr.
