Chicago-Midwest

I worked through the tears today as I learned of the death last night of another unsung SHERO of the Civil Rights Movement, Elder sisterLUCILLE CONWAY LOMAN!! She was one of the founding Chicago National Staff for OPERATION BREADBASKET, the economic arm of Rev. Dr Martin Luther Luther King's organization, The Southern Christian leadership Conference (SCLC). She was one of Dr. King's key administrative advisors who was one of the major strategic members of not just Dr. King, but to Rev. Clay Evans, Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr and she was one of the major MOTHERS and guides for a few generations of young people who came up under her guidance. It was the financial genius of Mrs. Loman who brokered the deal that moved the national headquarters of Operation Breadbasket to the new building at 50th & Drexel as the organization transitioned into Operation PUSH. It was strong Black women like Mrs. Loman, Rev Willie T. Barrow and Black women who were the strategic backbone who raised generations of us in leadership from the 60's and until her death. Her life and legacy lived and lives through so many that those of us who remain must carry on the genius that Dr. King, Rev. Evans, Rev. Jackson and so many others had in her that that she personally lifted up so many of us in our roles in the movement, from childhood to adult. Thank God for Lucille Loman. It was so easy to answer the question to be one of the pallbearers because for all the years she carried me in life, I certainly can help carry her.
