Determined to be the next mayor of Chicago, successful businessman Dr. Willie Wilson Monday filed 47,000 signatures with the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners he said took him just five days to collect.
Wilson, who was joined by Rikki Jones, president of the Cook County Democratic organization, Rev. Krista Alston, her parliamentarian, and former Senator Rickey Hendon, Wilson’s senior consultant, told this reporter, “It took me five-days to do that because I am highly favored. I had from 800 to 1,000 people on the street as volunteers.”
The 66-year-old Wilson said he’s running for mayor because he’s “fed up” with the lack of equity in economic empowerment increases in crime, high taxes, and the controversial red lights cameras. “I’ve had enough,” said Wilson who moved to Chicago a year ago  from Country Club Hills.  “We don’t deserve this kind of treatment. I joined this race to do something about it instead of sitting on the sidelines.
“I am a business person. I don’t owe anybody anything only to the people who elect me,” he said.
Asked if he would accept a mayoral salary, Wilson who is a philanthropist and a deacon, said he plans on donating his salary to his favorite churches.
“I make a living from my business.,” he said referring to his Omar Medical Supplies Company, his “Singsation” gospel show that airs on WGN-TV, and his gospel recordings.
But, not accepting a salary is nothing new for Wilson. “I take my Social Security check and give it away every month. I give it away to the people on the street who don’t have food. I get great joy out of doing that.
“I will donate it (mayor’s salary) to a needy cause like senior citizens. I don’t write that off. I give it away to people who are in need. I don’t want to write that off.” Wilson’s strategy mirrors that of his friend, Republican Gov.-Elect Bruce Rauner whom he endorsed and who defeated Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn. Rauner, a billionaire, is also not accepting a paycheck.
Wilson said he would soon release his income taxes. Which he says will reveal that he gives more to charity than the President of the U.S. “I give away $800,000 to $1 million to churches and community organizations,” said Wilson. “Every Sunday I am donating money to different churches. “
When asked what is his next step, Wilson said he is holding an organizational/strategy meeting Wednesday with clergy and close advisers. “We are going to be getting radio buys and planning fundraisers. We also plan to buy ads in the black media.”
“I am not going to beg anybody. This is a peoples campaign. If the people want me there, they will put me there,” said Wilson. When reminded that Mayor Rahm Emanuel has an awesome and healthy political warchest, Dr. Wilson said he is not intimidated by the mayor’s campaign funds. “I have favor and that is better than silver and gold,”he quipped.
In endorsing Wilson for mayor, Jones said, “The people of Chicago, especially in our community, need change. We have no jobs, our schools are closing and our children are being killed and none of the other candidates seem to care. Wilson is from and for the community.
“When you look at the other candidates, Jesus Garcia talks about his relationship to Mayor Washington who died in 1987. What has Garcia (who is a Cook County Commissioner) done since then?
“Garcia has been an elected official for awhile and a floor leader for Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. He had the capacity to speak out about the school closings in our neighborhood but he did not,” said Jones.
Messages for Garcia were not returned before deadline.
