Dr. Willie Wilson to free 61 more inmates
Chicago--Humanitarian and iconic businessman Dr. Willie Wilson is holding a press conference 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 16, 2016, at the Cook County Jail, 2700 S. California, Division 5, where he will bail out 61 more non-violent detainees who could not make bail.
“We have already bailed out 64 detainees,” said Dr. Wilson whose goal is to free 100 or more detainees by Thanksgiving Day. Using $50,000 of his own money, Wilson added, “We will have exceeded our goal by Wednesday. We will have bailed out 120 people.” He is also giving each $20.00.
The self-made multi-millionaire added, “I feel that the Lord has blessed me, and I feel today and every day I must do better in life for I have not done enough. I feel great and honored to help others. We are hoping the young men and women will take this second chance that they are getting and use it wisely, come out and don’t get back into the life. We’re hoping they lead productive lives.”
More than 65 pastors who have pledged to help the detainees once they are released will join Dr. Wilson.
At 11 a.m., on Thanksgiving Day, Dr. Wilson will provide a Thanksgiving meal for all of the former detainees at Rev. Marshall Hatch’s church, the New Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, 4301 W. Washington, where he will give each $200.00. Dr. Wilson has invited Gov. Bruce Rauner to attend this dinner.
Working with Rep. Elgie R. Sims, Jr. (D-34th) and Rep. LaShawn Ford (D-8th), Dr. Wilson has drafted a bill that will get people out of jail who are charged with misdemeanors without having to make bail.
“One woman was in jail for 221 days for stealing two candy bars,” Wilson said. “Jail overcrowding is a real problem and holding people accused of misdemeanors is even more serious because they should not have to languish in jail for months just because they can’t make bail.”
Dr. Wilson said those wanting to donate to his campaign to free low-level detainees can contribute by clicking on drwilliewilsonfoundation.org or text to give 312.818.4975 to give. “We are asking the community to support their own,” Wilson said.
When the detainees go to court, the funds will go back into the general fund allowing Wilson to free even more detainees.
