"My heart is heavy yet again today learning of the death and upcoming funeral services for JOE YOUNG, yet another elder that so many of us as youth activists/organizers were trained under and worked with under Harold Washington's Political Education Project (PEP). It was people like Joe Young, the late Joe Gardner and others who took the youth leaders under their wings and gave us the tools by which we then went out and organized thousands of youth across the city and state for the historic campaigns of the first Black Mayor Of Chicago Harold Washington. Joe Young was one of the elders who provided hands-on training and direction in our regular political education classes that we then took directly to the grassroots constituencies and civically educated and connected them across the city in ways that have not been duplicated in over 20 years and our communities desperately need again.
I am one who wants to stop now and pay this tribute to Joe Young whose name is not always mentioned when you see so many posts about the Harold Washington legacy, but I am glad to take few moments to remember and share it was the people like Joe Young who were part of the Washington legacy without the benefit of being publicly recognized as many other of those other elders of that movement with better public name recognition. I am one who as a youth will be forever be proud of being of of the many youth coordinators who were properly structured, focused and positioned as part of the grassroots youth who helped do historic youth voter registration, voter education, and turned out young voters and organizers for the historic election and re-election of Harold Washington as Chicago's first Black Mayor. Proud to be part of that historic legacy, and again, proud to lift up the elder community activist/organizer JOE YOUNG who helped guide me and so many others in our historic roles."
God bless
