Chicago Area Clergy Endorse Hillary Clinton for President
Building on the momentum from Hillary Clinton’s decisive win in South Carolina, nearly four dozen African American clergy endorsed her on Monday at the Chicago Lake Shore Hotel in Hyde Park. Former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, who accepted the endorsement on behalf of Hillary Clinton, joined the church leaders.
Rev. Walter Turner, who kicked off the news conference, said the group decided to endorse Clinton for president because there is too much at stake in this election. “This election is about the future of our children’s children and after much deliberation we understand that the best choice, the only choice for our community to support for president is Hillary Rodham Clinton,” said Turner of New Spiritual Light M.B. Church.
One of the four organizers of the news conference said the clergy are supporting Clinton, because of her history with the African American community. “We’re standing with Hillary, because she has stood with us,” said Bishop Tavis Grant, Greater First Baptist Church.
In accepting the clergy’s endorsement, Mayor Nutter praised the gathering for their commitment to the former Secretary of State saying, “this is a collection of individuals and leaders in this city and county, who when they say they’re going to do something they mean it.”
Rev. Ira Acree said the choice to support Clinton was an easy one for him, based on her commitment to invest in communities of need through infrastructure improvements, job creation, equal pay for women, and reforming the criminal justice system. “That means a lot to us when our sons and our grandsons are the ones populating these jails all across the country, explained Rev. Acree, of St. John Bible Church. “She’s the one who has committed to reforming and reducing mass incarceration of black men.”
Representing the south suburbs was Apostle Carl White Jr., of Kingdom of God and the president of the Southland Ministerial Health Network of Chicagoland, who told clergy he was supporting Clinton because of her work with healthcare.
“We need someone who’ll build on what President Obama has started. He has laid the foundation with the Affordable Care Act and I thank it makes more sense to rehab than to rebuild,” said the Markham pastor.
The clergy promised to do everything they can to make sure she wins the Democratic nomination and encouraged voters to take advantage of early voting, which began in Chicago on Monday.
