At the Annual International Convention of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, on June 28, 2016 at 8:30am UNITE HERE Local 1 President Karen Kent will call on Chicago to reconsider naming the city’s newest neighborhood after Robert R. McCormick.
Local 1 represents more than 800 people who work at locations in the neighborhood recently dubbed “McCormick Square” by the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA). The neighborhood runs from the Green Line east to Lake Michigan, and from 21st Street south to the Stevenson.
What: Local 1 President Karen Kent speaking at the Labor Breakfast at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, calling on Chicago to rename the newly named “McCormick Square” neighborhood.
When: Tuesday, June 28th, 2016 from 8:30am-10:00am
Where: Regency Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, 2233 S King Drive, Chicago IL 60616
Why: Citing Robert McCormick’s bias against Asians and his staunch anti-Mexican immigrant positions, the hospitality workers union urges the MPEA to reconsider the title “McCormick Square” for Chicago’s Newest Neighborhood. Naming the neighborhood “McCormick Square” perpetuates the hateful legacy of a man who was as bad as Trump.
