Before we get started with our next installment of this series, I wanted to drop in a few key books that will help men keep sharp during their venture into the political arena. The two books that I have on my radar involved Black conservatives, how politics impacted their lives, and how their families remained strong during their political careers and public visibility.

One book is J. C. Watts’ “What Color is a Conservative”. The second is Sheriff David Clarke’s “Cop Under Fire”. Both are great political books for the brother of color who is considering a run for elective office, and will ‘fill you in’ on some harsh realities about politics…both on the opposing side AND your own.

Of course I recommend reading books on the office you are seeking. You MUST be prepared in your public office pursuit. However, it helps to read books by those who have ‘been there’, and that their faith in God that has seen them through the political storms of their office.

Furthermore, IF you are a Christian, DAILY KJV Bible reading is essential! God will feed your spiritual man, and give your natural man the wisdom and the eyes to sidestep the traps that your enemies have in store for you on the campaign trail.

LIKE IT OR NOT--FAMILY IS FOREVER:
Political campaigns and offices come and go, but family is forever. Family is also the ‘Achilles’ Heel’ of many an up-and-coming candidate. Thus it is crucial that the brother who is seriously considering enter politics MUST make sure that he has a strong marriage, and a strong home life. It also helps IF your wife has had experience in the political ranks, and has a clear standing of the politics of YOUR party. Lastly, you must have a wife that believes YOUR party is OUR party, and share much of the same political beliefs that you have. All one has to do is look at several high-profile marriages involving politicians over the past few years. The spouse that is in the public eye is of one party, and the other spouse is of the opposing party. The mainstream mess likes to cover the fireworks between the couple…and it makes for scandalous copy.

If I may, godly, married men, with strong marriages and strong homes, are held to be in order when it comes to seeking the office of Pastor. This subject is covered in great detail in the books of I Timothy, II Timothy, and Titus in the KJV Bible. For a church to consider selecting a man who does not meet God’s standards for leadership of His church is a recipe for disaster.

This is probably why many churches are NOT growing in our present age.

It is much the same thing in politics.

Show me a candidate who has a strong faith in God, a strong home life, a loving wife, and obedient children and I’ll show you one who is bound for political success…regardless of what the social media pundits may click on their keyboards.
Brothers, keyboards do NOT vote. Further, it has been proven that ONLY 10 percent of the ‘keyboard clickers’ generate some 80 percent of the content for social media. Like I said, keyboards do NOT vote…and neither does social media.

But, they MAY cause some problems for a godly candidate.

The impact of social media is not as big as one may think. Further, with more and more of the social media platforms declaring their allegiances to the Democrat party, and other liberal points of view, those who are on the godly side of the street may expect to have their content censored…if not downright blocked by those who are on the inside of the electronic landscape. Further, expect your on-line footprint to be thoroughly examined back to when computers were invented, JUST to track down any ‘dirt’ or ‘questionable’ internet posting activities.

The GOOD news? People STILL want to vote for candidates that have good family qualities--even IF you have stumbled. Party workers want to work for and contribute their efforts toward electing Men of color with these attributes. Sure, you are NOT perfect…but you MUST be heading in the right direction.

If one can manage their OWN home, he can be trusted--for the most part--with the keys to an elective office.

I not only had the support of my wife in my political efforts, but…should I decided ever to get into the ‘ring’ again, I know who is going to be watching the campaign contributions--and finances! She has my back, and God has both of us.

One more thing brothers--WEAR your wedding band at ALL times! People want to ‘see’ what you believe. People WANT to be reminded that you ARE married!
Here’s another one for you. Younger voters are amazed with those who have been married fifteen years or more! I know, I know…this is small potatoes for those who have been married over twenty years or more. However, the millennial voter wants to meet those running for office who have set a distance, happiness and time benchmark in their marriages. It DOES make a difference!
Let me also share, in closing, the sage words of Pastor Tony Evans: “If you treat your wife like a thoroughbred, she won’t become a nag!”

THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS ‘MARRIAGE’ THING:
There was a Country Western song a few years back by the title of: “All My Exes Live In Texas”. Well, for those of us who have suffered through divorce, child custody, child visitation and child support, some of our exes live in the same town.

Make peace IF possible.

A candidate will certainly get a lot of questions on his home life from the press and media. He will get even MORE questions on his home life IF he has a divorce or two in his past, and has NOT made the efforts to make peace OR keep your child support under control. Plus, you can be sure that some reporter that (hopefully) has done his or her job will make an effort to talk with your former spouse--just in case--there is some dirt that is hidden under the hallway carpet that is ready for public consumption.

Let me put this down in front, brothers. Do NOT disrespect the mother of your children. It WILL have long term consequences BEYOND your current campaign. Do NOT do it, no matter how many ‘shots’ she may throw at you in private--or public. Further, IF you happen to be estranged from your children--even if they are grown and have been in the custody of the custodial spouse for a number of years, this might be another sticky area of contention.

Brothers, we are not perfect. Each of us has flaws, shortcomings and failures. Even a Christian man has a closet with a few sets of skeletal bones. However, the advantage the Christian man seeking political office has is that IN Jesus Christ, he has help in rendering those bones ‘deceased’. This does NOT mean that some ‘exes’ will go quietly into that good night without taking a pot shot (or two) at you…especially IF you have a successful new marriage. Christ will stand by you in this matter when others are pointing fingers at you.

This doesn’t mean, though, that you won’t get ‘dinged’.

There are some exes out there that are just plain mean. Furthermore, some of them go to church every Sunday and keep sipping on the Bitteraide, while ‘pretending’ to be a Christian woman. Some may say that you can’t judge people. Oh? Read the Scriptures. IF There is no fruit of the Spirit (Galatians, chapter 5 KJV) in some exes, no matter what they say, they ARE not Christians. This is the biblical standard!

Some exes will stay mad you continually. Others have poisoned your children against you. No matter what you do to better yourself and be civil ‘for the sake of your children’ that she has custody of, she ain’t buying it! You could be elected President of the United States, and she would be on Capitol Hill pushing for your impeachment! All the while saying--in public--“Who…ME?”

In fact, President Trump made peace with his ex!

Here’s a tip. Hopefully you’ve tried to make peace. However, if this doesn’t work, then you are going to have to make a choice…prayerfully ask for the Lord’s help in making peace, sacrifice your political office dream and aim yourself in helping others with better backgrounds to ‘make it’ to elective office, or, look the press in the eye and run anyway, warts and all!

Every candidate and campaign needs a good ‘top kick’ to get things done along the political trail. You may be that person. However, a bad marriage, vengeful ex, and non-appreciative children won’t stop a bid for public office…but it could slow you down, even IF you have a solid marriage and family life in the present. Go WITH your faith in God! I’m not hating, I’m just stating; just pointing out the realities of the landscape, brothers. I’m not writing about what I don’t know, or haven’t experienced. Experience is a great teacher, but, sometimes is also a cruel master IF you don’t learn from the lessons brought before you.

WINNING THAT FIRST RACE…NOW WHAT?
Back in the day, when the polls closed, and the results came back, I won my first race my first time out for the office of Precinct Committeeman in the GOP. Of course, I got the formal attention of downtown, the local press, and my wife and family. It wasn’t a big office…but it was an important office. It put me on the map within my party, and got me ready for the hard work that lay ahead.

But first, let me explain what the office I won signified in the political process.

Every city and municipality has a political party in charge (major party) and the other political party is in a lesser position (minor party). In Indianapolis, Indiana for a lot of years, the Republicans held sway. Only in the last five years or so, Democrats have captured City Hall and the top county positions. This wasn’t such a shock, considering the fact that Marion County (Indianapolis) has been majority Democrat for a lot of years.

You see, among the things that those interested in politics need to understand is the lay of the local political landscape and why things are the way they are. Yes, Indianapolis has had more registered Democrats than Republicans--this has been true for a number of years. BUT the Democrats in the county--for the most part--voted for Republicans because Republicans knew how to campaign AND knew how to govern. When the Republicans did NOT govern properly, nor put forth decent candidates…guess what happened? Right! The political script was flipped.

Let me drop this in here as well. People will NOT vote for a ‘carbon copy’ of one candidate over another. There is no such thing as ‘Democrat lite’, or ‘Republican easy’. IF you aren’t willing to line up with your party’s platform, DO NOT run for elective office. This doesn’t mean you can’t come up with stronger ideas on some of the issues than exist in the platform. However, you DO have an obligation to ‘dance with the one who brung ya!’ Stay loyal. Voters respect this…and so does your party. If you can NOT be loyal, then switch to another party WELL before you run!
To me, there is just something ‘cheap’ and ‘cowardly’ about a man who runs and wins under one party, but who secretly supports another party, and THEN decides--while in office--to switch parties.

The Bible calls this person a ‘Traitor’.

The party bosses won’t respect that man…and neither will the voters.

While the Republicans are currently the minority party in my home county, the Democrats in positions of power KNOW that they have to govern LIKE Republicans (not getting rabidly crazy like the national Democrats) otherwise, they will be put OUT in the next election by what I would like to call ‘the little old lady’ army. If the little old ladies that work the polls are NOT happy, there will be a high body count for the party in power come primary and/or general election time.

Precinct Committeemen are responsible for their assigned precinct. They are the first lieutenants in the field. They are responsible for being the conduit from the poll workers to downtown when elections take place. They are also responsible for making sure households and individuals are registered to vote, and have their voting rights protected. They are also the best representative face of the local political organization.

Precinct Committeemen are the Ambassadors for their political party. These are ALSO the people whom you must impress and ‘court’ if you plan to get into the political arena. It helps--I say again, it HELPS--to have served in this position.
More to come, next month!

Mike Ramey is a Minister, Modern Street Gangs Specialist, Political Consultant and Syndicated Columnist who lives in Indianapolis, Indiana. “Ramey‘s Guide To Elective Office For Men” is one of a variety of columns that Ramey has in cyberspace. By Raynard Jackson, Columnist ~

Last week I had a very long conversation with a major political operative about whether there was a role for Blacks in the Republican Party, on congressional staffs, on campaign staffs, or the various presidential campaigns.

The simple response is that the Republican Party is racist; they don’t care about Blacks; and they don’t think they need the Black vote.

But, as me and this operative discussed, it has less to do with race and more to do with the “institutions” of the Republican Party.

The party’s institutions, by nature, tend to do the things they are comfortable and familiar with; and they are no longer comfortable or familiar with the Black community.

The Republican National Committee (RNC), to my knowledge, has never had a Black finance director, chief of staff, communications director, etc. I rarely, if ever, encountered a Black staffer in non-traditional roles within the party.

I am not aware of any Black campaign manager for a major office seeker, or executive director of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) or the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC).

So, the typical argument is that they can’t find any “qualified” Blacks (as though they have a plethora of “unqualified” Blacks); or they can’t find Blacks with the necessary experience. Well, somehow they seem to always be able to find Buffy and Biff for all sorts of jobs within the various party structures; and the reason is very simple—people tend to hire people they know or people that are referred to them by people they respect.

So, these issues have less to do with race and more to do with relationships. Party operatives hire their friends and their friend’s friends

Unless you have party leaders who are totally committed to the issue of diversity and willing to radically alter the “institutions” of the Republican Party; there will never be an appreciable level of Black participation in the party.

My decades of experience within this party lead me to conclude that the party doesn’t have the bandwidth necessary to change the face of the party; any change in regards to the issue of diversity will have to be forced upon the party from the outside.

This might even include losing yet another presidential election.

I agree with many Republicans that something extraordinary happened last week. Marco Rubio, a Cuban, was endorsed by Nicky Haley, governor of South Carolina of Indian descent and Tim Scott, a U.S. Senator from South Carolina and Black.

The Democratic Party can only dream of having this type of diversity. But where are the Black staffers for Rubio’s campaign? Where are the Blacks on Haley’s staff? Tim Scott has an impeccable record when it comes to diversity on his staff.

But this surface diversity means absolutely nothing unless and until you diversity the very structures at every level of the Republican Party.

The irony of all ironies is that Donald Trump is the only presidential candidate to have any Blacks on his staff in any significant positions; Blacks that he doesn’t want to be invisible.

Trump is the only candidate to speak about how poorly Blacks have fared under Obama or meet with Black preachers.

Trump is considered a political disruptor by the establishment; but yet he seems to be the only Republican that sees any value in the Black vote. In other words, he seems to be the only candidate that is willing to think outside the box when it comes to the conventional views of the Black vote.

Maybe a Trump candidacy is what is needed to disrupt this stagnant party and its very institutions when it comes to the Black vote.

Trump can easily get north of 15% of the Black vote simply by cultivating relations with the Black business community. Sadly, this is the one group most ignored by the Republican Party; the one group that is most philosophically in synch with the Republican message is the one group that no one pays attention to.

Could this be part of the reason the establishment is so afraid of a Trump candidacy; that he will radically change the face of the various institutions of the Republican Party?

In the immortal words of the great poet, George Bernard Shaw, “the reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends upon the unreasonable man.”

Maybe Trump is unreasonable enough to literally change the face of the party and by so doing end up being elected to be the next president of these United States. Just something that’s worth thinking about.

Raynard Jackson & Associates, LLC is an internationally recognized political consulting, government affairs, and PR firm based in Washington, DC. Too often media, both left and right, only talk to people who view the world from the same prism as they do.

The same argument can be made about the political establishment from both parties. There is a total disconnect between the establishment of both parties and their respective bases. This disconnect is personified in the presidential candidacies of both businessman Donald Trump and Independent Vermont senator Bernie Sanders.

To this end, the Republican establishment is by far the biggest loser of 2015.

They told Republican voters that if they raised and contributed money to help them gain control of congress, they would shrink the size of government, defund Obama’s amnesty for illegals, and stop these trade deals that would subjugate America’s sovereignty to international organizations.

We helped Republicans to gain control of congress and then they quickly began to do the moonwalk on every issue they promised us they would fight for.

Then along comes Donald Trump launching his presidential campaign based on all the promises the Republican congress made and broke. The Republican congress created Donald Trump’s candidacy.

Now the same Republican establishment that created Trump is actively trying to destroy and sabotage his campaign. Message to the establishment: Trump is not the problem. Republican voters don’t want amnesty for illegals, they don’t want increased debt ceilings, they don’t want more H1-B visas, they don’t want all these trade deals, they don’t want more continuing resolutions (CRs); and they don’t want omnibus budget bills passed, just to name a few.

However impolitic you may think Trump’s verbiage is; he makes voters believe he is sincere in what he says. He projects strength and leadership and has proven that he is willing to take it hard to Bill & Hillary Clinton.

Trump has the uncanny ability to connect with the average voter and tap into what they are feeling at any given moment. Most of the other candidates wait on polls to tell them what to think and what to believe; but Trump somehow always seems to just instinctively know what is going on within the electorate.

If the establishment would spend more time fighting for the values that they campaigned on; there would be no Trump candidacy.

Trump is totally rewriting the playbook on how to run for president. He is the only candidate to actively engage with the Black community in any meaningful way during the primary. He has even gone so far as to hire Blacks and then put them on TV representing his campaign. WOW, what a novel thought!

Because of Trump’s business background, I think he understands that the Black community is open to a message of economic empowerment; I think he understands how to penetrate or create a new market, i.e. the Black vote.

Most of the other candidates are too busy listening to their pollsters and other establishment figures tell them that going after the Black vote is a waste of time.

As I have written repeatedly, Blacks are looking for the Republican Party to give them a reason to vote for them, but only Trump has even remotely began to see this possibility.

Republicans have absolutely no idea of the chasm that exists between Blacks and Hillary Clinton. She doesn’t have the connection to Blacks like Bill Clinton and to a lesser extent, Barak Obama.

She will attempt to scare Blacks into voting for her by telling them that Republicans are racists, etc., etc., etc. She will also pay Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton to do their dirty work for her.

Hillary has no substantive track record to take to the Black community. She shows up for all the right symbolic events in the Black community, but has done nothing of any substance.

She insults the Black community by equating homosexual entitlements to Civil Rights. She supports amnesty for illegals though everyone knows it will devastate the Black community.

The real sign of what these Republican presidential candidates think about the Black vote will be shown in two weeks when the nation celebrates Martin Luther King’s birthday on January 18.

If a candidate only issues a perfunctory press statement, then you know that campaign is not serious about the Black vote.

Each campaign should do an event on King’s birthday within the Black community and give a major policy speech on their vision for Civil Rights should they become president.

I will be stunned if any campaign does anything substantive on King’s holiday.

In order for any Republican to win the White House, he will have to think outside the box and be able to get at least 15% of the Black vote.

The only person I see willing to invest the time, money and effort to do this is Donald Trump.

Raynard Jackson & Associates, LLC is an internationally recognized political consulting, government affairs, and PR firm based in Washington, DC. So, I have a few questions that I wish Beck would have addressed. You can only restore that which was lost. So, what in Beck’s mind was lost and how is he going to restore it? If it was a “celebration of America’s heroes and heritage,” then why was there no soldier of color participating in any of the activities? All the soldiers were white men. It reminded me of watching the Flintstones and the Jetsons cartoons as a kid---not one Black was ever seen in either. The Flintstones were about the past and the Jetsons were about the future. So, according to Hollywood, Blacks had no past and we don’t have a future. Beck was asked by many in the Black community to move the date of his event in deference to our feelings about this date. He refused. But, he wants the Muslims in New York to move the location of their future mosque in deference to him and others who think the location is too close to ground zero. Hmmm, how do you spell hypocrisy? This is the same person that called a sitting president “a racist…with a deep seated hatred of white people.” The day after his event, he gave a simi-apology for making that statement. But one would have thought if he really was regretful of what he said, he would have used the national stage he had during his event to make the apology. But maybe he didn’t want his white friends in attendance to see him apologize in front of a national audience. Afterall, we wouldn’t want people to call him an “apologist” for America like they say about President Obama.

Remember, you can’t have unity without “u & i.” But everything about Beck does just the opposite. In about five minutes, she gave a great recitation of the civil rights movement.
April 2, 2009Raynard JacksonThe root of the word conservative is con. And that’s exactly what the American people have received from conservatives.Modern American conservatism was created out of an alliance between classical liberals and social conservatives at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. Many credit philosopher Edmund Burke as the father of this movement. Former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln stated that “conservatism is adherence to the old and tried, against the new and untried.” President Reagan is said to have stated, “I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism.”But, for a Republican Party that reflexively quotes Reagan in every other word they speak, I find it quite odd that they espouse an agenda that is antithetical to what Reagan believed. You have a Republican Party that grossly interfered in the Elian Gonzalez custody case. Republican members of congress tried to pass a bill to give him retroactive citizenship (though his father wanted him returned to Cuba). And this is the party of family values?Remember the Terri Schiavo case. A case that President Bush, the Republican congress, and conservative activists injected themselves in over the objections of Schiavo’s husband (who was the legal guardian). All this grandstanding took place because these conservatives wanted to score political points at the expense of their so-called conservative principles.During 6 of the 8 years of the Bush administration, Republicans controlled both houses of congress. What did they do? They increased government spending, increased the federal deficit, decreased government oversight of most federal agencies, and chipped away a many of our rights to privacy (all in the name of national security).Conservatives vociferously claim that race shouldn’t matter. I guess they are right in this regards because one rarely see anyone outside their race within their organizations (congressional staffs, think thanks, newspapers, etc.). So, they are truly color-blind or just blind to people of color.Conservatives constantly warn of the dangers of “BIG GOVERNMENT,” except when it comes to abortion or pharmacists who don’t want to fill prescriptions they disagree with. If they can’t outlaw abortion, they want to force doctors to show women an ultrasound of the fetus or mandate women receive information on adoption. They also want a law to allow pharmacists the right to refuse to fill a prescription that goes against their morals. These are the same people who raised holy hell when it was widely reported that Muslims in Minnesota refused to check out customers at a grocery store if they had pork or alcohol (because of their religious beliefs). Conservatives basically said they should find new work (and I agree with them). I say the same thing to physicians and pharmacists.Weak people take strong positions on weak issues. Conservatives will raise a stink about abortion, but said very little to this day about the abuse the Catholic Church unleashed on innocent children.Conservatives always talk about the hypocrisy of the left, but I challenged them on the very same point. Are they for less government? Or Just when it’s an issue that they are promoting? Are they for individual freedom, even when it involves something they disagree with (Terri Schiavo’s husband’s right to remove her from life support or Elian Gonzalez’s father’s right to have his son returned to him in Cuba)?Conservatives claim to support the rule of law, but based on the above cases, it seems this only applies if they are in agreement with the actions in question. They are quick to quote Lincoln and Reagan with their words, but with their actions they have become as the tinkling cymbal or sounding brass; full of sound and fury, but signifying nothing.Raynard Jackson is president & CEO of Raynard Jackson & Associates, LLC., a D.C.-based political consulting/government affairs firm.
March 26, 2009Raynard JacksonLast year, President Barack Obama ran the closest thing to a perfect campaign ever seen in this country. There was no senior level turnover during the campaign. There was no public feuding from various factions within his campaign (unlike Hillary Clinton’s). Even the transition was extraordinarily smooth. So, I am dumbfounded by all the drama surrounding the early days of his presidency. Seems like Obama went from a serious drama to a sitcom in short order. When he made his announcement in Springfield, IL in 2007, it was All in the Family, with his wife and children. The media portrayed him as the ultimate Family Guy. He campaigned One Day At A Time with his cast of Friends. He campaigned with a discipline unseen in presidential politics. With his upset victory in the Iowa caucuses, his supporters were feeling Good Times. But with the unexpected loss in New Hampshire, they felt Bewitched and Lost. But, he proved to be a Survivor heading into Super Tuesday. He refused to take his campaign into the Weeds, even when Hillary’s campaign went very negative on him. For that, he received Big Love from the voters. The Obama campaign got hit with The Facts of Life of politics as the Clinton’s showed their true Colors in South Carolina. Bill Clinton basically said welcome to The Real World. Obama tried to knock Hillary out in Texas, but they went down to the Wire. But, he did ultimately destroy the Clinton’s Dynasty. They never thought he could win The Office. Their explanation was definitely from Spin City. The Democratic convention was one of the best run conventions ever. The huge crowds gave him loud Cheers, thereby making him an American Idol. During the general election, Obama ran an Amazing Race, with John McCain being the Biggest Loser. His campaign made McCain’s team look like a bunch of Scrubs and subsequently, they all disappeared Without a Trace. Now that Obama made his Bones, it was time to move to the West Wing. He found that it was a Different World than he thought. He inherited an economy that was in the General Hospital, but is now in the ER.There is no doubt that Obama has one of America’s Toughest Jobs. But, with 20/20 hindsight, it’s quite obvious that his budget will turn our country into a Supernanny state. As the World Turns and Obama searches for his Guiding Light, our country seems to see nothing but Dark Shadows.Seems the Commander in Chief wants us to live on Fantasy Island—a place where the government is the answer to all that ails us.But What’s Happening is no one trusts the government. We know every president has Different Strokes once they get In the House. But Gimme a Break. Before you start expanding the government, you must reform it and make it functional. The government couldn’t protect people from Bernard Madoff. The Securities and Exchange Commission couldn’t protect us from Wall Street. If we are not careful, we are all going to end up in the House of Payne!Raynard Jackson is president & CEO of Raynard Jackson & Associates, LLC., a D.C.-based political consulting/government affairs firm. Last Sunday as I sat in the congregation of one of the most prestigious churches in Harlem, it mesmerized me to hear the praises, chats and applauses for President Barack H. Obama, as our nation’s 44th President of the United States. As a black man, it was an incredible moment in history to see someone who shared my same features, living on 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Interestingly, statistics show that a large majority of Americans feel that racism no longer exist, but fail to realize that the real culprit may be economics, not racism. Economics is the study of scarce or limited resources, allowing individuals that understand this study to prosper in this capitalist society.
The problem is that economic practices have not been presented in a positive manner towards the black community, but has been shielded by overtones of racism and bigotry. For example, the concept of statistical discrimination means that a group is being “discriminated” against based on circumstance, not prejudices. In the case of African Americans, or Hispanics not being able to qualify for a loan, this may not just be about race but external factors; for example employment, education, or marital status. In 1996, millions of Americans wanted the opportunity to own a home for the first time, by protesting against unequal practices towards owning a home. Unfortunately, as we witness a financial meltdown, the question regarding America’s creditworthiness was simply avoided, which has directly come back to haunt our financial markets.
Historically, the civil rights era, under activist like; Dr. King, Bayard Rustin, Stokley Carmichael, Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey, Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Dubois spanned over forty years of fighting for equal opportunity, including economic empowerment, equality and justice. Unfortunately, one of the few tenants that seeped through the cracks of the 1964 civil rights act was the system of Debt. Statistics show that 71% American population have succumbed to debt, which is nothing more than enslavement without the chains. The best practiced solution against debt is to be pro-active in learning about financial literacy and not living above one’s means. In the civil right era, the concept of “the man” dominated the notion that all of black America was constrained by wealthy, white business men, which was simply not true.
On a brighter note, the application of Economics can work for us and historically has worked for us. As African American scholars travel back to the Harlem Renaissance, it’s suggested that 89% of Harlem was owned by African-Americans in the 1930’s; businesses, laundry mats, dry cleaners, banks, churches, real estate, commercial revenue, school buildings, cinema’s, grocery stores and brownstones. What’s interesting about the history’s presentation on the Harlem Renaissance is the lack of discussion on economic empowerment, in comparison to the arts and literature of black poets, artist and musicians....
