WHERE THEY GONNA GO—NOW?

Interesting fact that has escaped ‘lifelong, hard-core’ Democrats during our recent social upheavals in Democrat-run cities: “Where are your children and grandchildren going to go in order to get their first job?” Please allow me to take a brief trip down memory lane to outline what jobs have either disappeared for teens, or—thanks to liberals—have gone the way of manual typewriters.

Time was that a young man (or a young lady) could get a job as a newspaper carrier, complete with collection book and bag with the name of the Daily newspaper. Whoops—forget this! Those days are gone. First, it was ‘decreed’ by many a newspaper that teens and pre-teens couldn’t be trusted to do the job that their fathers—and in some cases grandfathers—did with pride in their youth. Liberals held that adults were ‘better suited’ for the job. Then, with the rise of the Internet, you don’t need to have your paper delivered by hand anymore—so scratch many of those jobs.

Opening a lemonade stand? Great way to learn how to run your own business and for a child and their friends to earn some spending money. Whoops—forget this! The Nanny State—through many city agencies and police officers have decreed that Jimmy or Johnny can’t do this—even with the proper permits. Do a quick social media search of cases where young people got hassled or busted by some ‘Karen’ who got mad because THEIR child couldn’t hack this job.

Working in fast food? Whoops—forget this! More and more fast-food joints are hiring illegal aliens—even in urban areas—OVER high school and college students. Thank the Democrats for the illegal alien surges for the last several years. Teens going door to door to cut lawns? Whoops—forget this! Illegals have undercut the market for such services and have been crisscrossing many a city with mowers, blowers, and rakes. BTW—they have gotten better at organization. Working at the Mall after school or on weekend? The Malls that are open have more and more vacant stores—and more and more illegals behind the counter. You can thank the Democrats for this. Working part time retail for high school or college students? Whoops—forget this! Because of the crime waves in Blue (Democrat) cities, more and more big box retailers are closing up shop and heading for places where law and order are in fashion. Now—if the truth be told--many of these lib retailers have not repented from being woke…but they ARE going broke, and extra seasonal hiring is being limited.

The light of day is starting to break. The Mayor of Dallas, Texas recently switched from Democrat to Republican? Why? Simple. Illegal aliens, lack of law enforcement and boarded up downtowns are part of the answer. You can’t get tax revenue from empty buildings, and you can’t raise taxes on people who are leaving town faster than moving vans. Any other Blue city Mayors willing to clean up the crime to help young people get their first job instead of ‘hanging out’ in a mob? The ballot box may soon have some amazing results—along with the population counts of many a Democrat-run city.

Mike Ramey is a Retired Minister, KJV Bible Teacher, syndicated columnist and Bible Prophecy Specialist who lives in Indianapolis, Indiana. “The Quick Scan” is one of a variety of his columns appearing and abounding in print and cyberspace, written from a biblical, business, and common-sense perspective since 1996.

THE KIDS ARE DOING ALRIGHT, BABY!

One of the things I learned while job hunting many years ago (during yet another economic downturn) is that you need to ‘turn off’ the mainstream mess (MSM) because the ‘talking heads’ will cause you more harm than good with their steady stream of bad news. Therefore, following that advice, I’ve decided to supply some good news on the youth front.

STILL PAINTING ALL OF OUR YOUTH WITH A BAD BRUSH:

It’s not that hard to turn on the news or get your ‘daily dose of drama’ from social media and fill your eyes and spirit with all kinds of negativity. As a (former) member of the fourth estate and ‘working press’ (as we used to call it), I’m enjoying life retired. However, I still know the tricks of my former ‘trade’. One of them is—since the public is not protesting how OUR young people are being portrayed—to showcase OUR young people as “Pimps, Playahs, Thugs, Hoes and Prostitutes”.

It’s not enough to develop our own media sources. Seems that MANY of the ‘Black Press’ have sold us out and are playing the same blame game as those media outlets ‘of the lighter hue’. By the way, much of the Black Media community are solidly in the camp of the Democratic National Committee, Planned Parenthood, the NEA, the NAACP, the Sodomite mafia, the Transvestite goons and a host of other liberal, alphabet organizations dedicated to the destruction of the Black community they ‘claim’ to represent.

Please—don’t cash their ‘sucker checks’, amen?

Let me drop a pause at this point. The Black community—as a whole—is still Pro-Life, Pro-Church, Pro-Police and Anti-Crime. Our families are growing stronger, our marriages are lasting longer, and we are still creating business, raising solid children, and finding our way to the church house—Wuhan virus or not. There are too many ‘Black Traitors’ in the Black Press and the various (alleged) alphabet groups bent on our destruction, on the one hand, and claiming ‘victimhood’ on the other. Of course, all this has to do with making money off us.

If we did our homework, we would find that MORE than a third of us live in the suburbs. More Black parents are homeschooling their children, and fewer of our children are winding up in the criminal justice system. Yes, there will always be a share of our young knuckleheads on TV or social media committing crimes…but the ONLY reason why you see US is because of design, NOT because of reality.

Black myths sell White—and Black—media narratives.

Wanna see a change in how we—and our young—are covered in the MSM and the SM? Boycott the liars in the media, whether they are Black—or White. Write letters. Cancel subscriptions. Cut your cable. Bypass some apps. The ONLY reason why negative media coverage of Blacks continues is that we are content to let someone else control our narrative. I’m here to tell you that, even though we have MORE news on the airwaves, there are FEWER Black reporters, editors, and news managers involved in the process than there were back in the sixties and seventies.

The power is not in the byline or in front of the camera, my friend. The power is behind the scenes. We—as a people—need to get beyond being ‘seen’ on camera and be in positions that determine not only WHO is on the camera, but WHAT is being reported about US!

Got your OWN podcast or column out in cyberspace? Why not? What are you waiting for?

THE KIDS ARE DOING ALRIGHT!

This summer, I have had the opportunity to be blessed by some of the sharpest Black youth I have seen come down the pike since my teaching days. I’ve met them in church, on the street, or working and serving as local deliver help. I decided to pen this column after meeting my latest ‘Black heroes’, a team of pizza delivery warriors. Dad was the driver and bodyguard. The teenage daughter stayed with the car and rode shotgun. The real hero was a young man who was a SIXTH grader who delivered the pizza (under the watchful eye of Dad), counted the money and watched to see if I—the customer—was satisfied (which I was).

Earlier in the summer, I had the chance to teach at a church Vacation Bible School. A 14 year-old Black brother was my only student for the entire week. Not only did he learn his lessons, he asked about the background of several other religions in comparison with Christianity. When it came time to do the summary presentation for the class, he presented flawlessly. His presentation was so solid that the young man’s grandmother JOINED the church at the invitation by the Pastor.

Not to be outdone, I ran into a few older Black college students and graduates this summer. Young men and young women. Sharp. Able to present themselves. Sure of their abilities. Knew when to drop the slang and put forth plain English. Able to tell me where they attended, what they hoped to accomplish and the fields they were going into. And—most importantly—not only did they know WHERE the church house was, they carried themselves as if they had the church and Jesus Christ IN them. Sure, a few of them suffered setbacks, but I encouraged them to take a few more steps forward in their studies and ‘try’ some practical advice.

Black parents who are doing the job—whether they are single or married—need to the commended by the REST of the sensible Black community. We’ve been down on ourselves for far too long. When you see an upstanding young Black man or young Black woman, let ‘em know that you are proud of them. Put a book, money, anything encouraging into their hands or into their ears as sources of information. Someone invested in you. I believe it is high time that we return the favor and invest in our youth who are doing—not just trying—to live life on the right side of the street.

Mike Ramey is a Retired Minister & KJV Bible Teacher, syndicated columnist and book reviewer who lives in Indianapolis, Indiana. “The Ramey Commentaries” is one of a variety of his columns appearing and abounding in print and cyberspace, written from a biblical, business, and common-sense perspective since 1996. Needless to say, I was totally overwhelmed at how much there is to learn and do as a “blogger.” Which is a polite way of saying that I have barely scratched the surface of what started out for me to be a way to get around slow editors who have the tendency to either sit on, or dismiss what I consider essential information to the Black community.

Of course, each blogger thinks his or her blog is God's gift to the readership. We each hope we have found resonance in a niche that will continue to follow us for decades to come. Some blog for serious profit. Some blog for fun. I admit that the profit side of the equation has definitely eluded me. Though I'd like to realize some ducats from this endeavor – I also have to admit, that since writing is a labor of love for me, I'll probably do it whether or not anyone ever advertises with me. It's like my other passions – talking, reading, dancing, sewing – I do them because I truly love what I do, and I think I'm pretty good at it.

That said, there was so much happening at the BlogWorld Expo, I probably spent more time gawking than anything else. However, the SimulTV Booth totally blew my mind. I felt it was one of the most blog-worthy and newsworthy breakthroughs on the horizon, so I took the time to do an indepth interview with the principals. So listen up, you guys, because this may well take America and the world where Steve Jobs left off:

SimulTV is a social TV protocol that is prepped to launch a beta version soon. They presented at BlogWorld to provide a glimpse into the future. This revolutionary technology allows viewers to interface with their favorite video entertainment incorporating traditional TV with social interaction, With SimulTV friends and family can simultaneously share video streamed content while at the same time communicating through a picture-in picture video chat format. It's as though the individuals are in the same room, watching the same show, and at the same time through the PiP format, can see each other, talk to each other, share comments, concerns, etc, far exceeding the current method of online chatting. Wow!

In speaking with one of the key investors about why he chose to back Steve Turner, the inventor and genius behind this concept, he stated that the first time he heard about it, he was as incredulous as I was. However, after having an opportunity to test it out for himself, he decided to become involved in providing the funds necessary to get the project off the ground. It's just a little over a year old, and was just launched last week, June 5th at the BlogWorld and New Media Expo.

Wesley Linzy, a tall, affable African American brother, who is COO of Virginia-based Interconnect Media Network Systems (IMN), stated that he had come across the company as an outside sales rep. “IMN specializes in video ingestion and encoding, as well as HD and SD transcoding and delivery using adaptive bitrate streaming. IMN has both hardware and cloud based services as well as a full line of products that will seamlessly integrate with your current broadcast workflow.” (This is technical stuff, you guys; I don't pretend to understand it at all, but I totally realize that it is a cut above what we currently have).

Mr. Linzy, who is completing a Masters in Business and Entrepreneurship, continued: “I have a sales background. I deal mainly with computer hardware and software. One day I was just calling people, and I noticed this interesting system there. And I asked what is it that you do? And he said we simultaneously videochat while watching live TV at the same time. I said that's interesting, how many people do you have working on this? He said, 'not a whole lot. We need some more help, if you want to do that.' At that time I was working on my graduate degree, so I asked if we could use it for a business plan. He said 'sure, go for it!' I've been involved since about 2009, 2010. And here we are today.”

In launching the Beta Test, according to Linzy, the first 30-day roll out will be free, and will probably be up and running within the next week. They are expecting a large sign up. Once they tweak the system, they are looking to roll out full steam ahead in late August or early September of 2012. They already have 40 channels, of which 10 are exclusive to SimulTV. The ones they can currently verify are Home Shopping Network (HSN); LCN out of Louisiana – they're pretty much landlocked, and want to go global; One World Sports.

Linzy also indicated an interest in working with other affiliates: “We're looking for people who produce content. Just spoke with some African American artists who do a comedy skit, and are looking to bring them on. Have another African American based company that is looking to do their own channel about helping fallen superstar athletes recover from problems and retake their lives. They are looking to use us to help connect with their fans via video chatting – there might be someone out there that can help.”

Those individuals who are interested in providing QUALITY content, can definitely contact Wesley Linzy with proposals, concepts, ideas, services – he will be more than happy to talk with you. Their next move of course, once they've completed the Beta Test and have calibrated their results, will be to "go global with it," working with a broad variety of people across the spectrum.

Linzy continued, “We will wind up needing really good help. But for me, personally, if you have some great talent out there, and you're African American, I will be more than willing to help you out. Or, if they are just interested in talking with someone in this position (Chief Operating Officer)- I didn't have that mentor myself - they can always contact me. We're looking to reach out to the community as much as possible and give help.”

Linzy also stated his own personal goal and vision is to be able to turn 70% to 80% of the profits back to at-risk communities, with the proviso that they pay it forward in some significant way: "They will work within the program. I will help them fix their houses, help pay bills, feed them and stuff like that. But they are going to have to go through our financial seminars and other training and education programs in order to qualify. If they don't do that, they can't participate. If they go through the program, they have to pay it forward by helping others, and keep it going," he concluded.

While IMN is looking for investors, they are clear that they want people who see their vision and really want to work with them in fulfilling it; not those who would try to cannibalize the program, and turn it into just another mindless mishmosh of mindless, mediocre, over stimulating misinformation.

It is clear that the thrust of SimulTV is family oriented, which is why content and control are of primary concern to both Linzy and Turner. Per Linzy, “We truly want to help people, and not just make a quick buck.” This principle of doing well by doing good is a rare quality, and one that should be nurtured, respected and promulgated. Particularly in light of the recent debacle that has turned the US and the rest of the world on its ear – greed, avarice, insensitivity, and depraved disrespect for human beings – perhaps this is the progenitor of what TV can really be about, given the right programming, and higher minded principles.

Getting an interview with SimulTV's inventor and CEO, Steven Turner - a soft spoken, well thought out (read – intense) guy, was sort of like wading through a throng of fans at a rock concert – but well worth the wait.

When he was finally available for interview, I asked, “What is this and how you started it?” He responded enthusiastically: “Well, basically, what this is is SimulTV – being able to take live cable television on demand, over the internet, and around the world, over any device, over any platform, so you can also integrate your social media – like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn – and reach out to everybody that's connected to you socially through all these social villages, simultaneously around the world. But on top of that we also incorporate a picture-in-picture conferencing system, where you can invite someone to do a video conference with you, while you're watching a live, or on-demand product; and you can have a virtual living room, no matter where they are in the world. So you can connect with your family and friends, where ever they might be, with our busy schedules; and see them, and talk to them, and share a movie and have the family unite. Just like you used to when you were a child. Now, with today's busy lifestyle, it's not as easy!” {Mind you, Steven Turner said all this in one breath - with the intensity and enthusiasm of a man on fire, who knows he is about to provide something wonderful to the world – and indeed, he is!}

Truly, in this day and age of modern technological breakthroughs, there are no lack of geniuses. However, it's rare to have the opportunity of speaking with the possible next Bill Gates, or Steve Jobs, face to face, right at the beginning of their climb, before the world beats that proverbial path to his door. I must admit, I do feel that there are times when I am in a privileged space.

“What inspired you to do this? What was the genesis behind this?” was my next query, to which he responded: “Well, I'm an inventor. I like to tinker around with things. I don't claim to be a genius by no means; I'm just – I'm creative. In a past life, like right out of high school, I was under the Disney Internship, and I was an artist. I had a scholarship to Columbus College of Art and Design. The scholarship ran out, so did I. So I never got to finish. I went free lance for a while, and then I got into technology. I just still look at things as an artist. I create. I don't look at it like an engineer – where they think more inside the box. I don't see a box. You know, like, “It does this, why can't I do this with it. And I figure out how to do it.”

Turner went on to say that Walt Disney was one of his idols, as well as Nikola Tesla, the great inventor. And I admit, unabashedly, that I am a total Disney admirer as well (however, paralleling Tesla, were two other heroes of mine, who were his contemporaries – Granville T. Woods, and Lewis Latimer – both of whom were African Americans of major influence in bringing about the birth of the modern age of electricity and communication. In fact, without Latimer's famous tungsten filament, the light bulb would have never worked – but that's another story).

Walt Disney alone stands out as one who transformed nothing into something just through the sheer dint of his imagination – I mean, how many people do you know could not only make a line (drawing) walk, but talk? And create an entire empire and industry around it that employs millions, and is loved by millions worldwide? Talk about the transformative power of imagination – or imagineering, as the Disney people call it. Steven Turner is now embarking on a similar path.

In reference to the “beta test”, Turner stated, “we are going to let people log on, sign up for it; and we'll send out invites in the next few days and weeks. We're going to allow them to play around with a few channels, just a handful, right now; a few features, because we're developing user experience, and want feedback. Say what you like and what you don't like about it, and we'll roll out new builds every week or two. And, as we figure out how everybody likes to see the system, I want the consumers to design this. That way, it's what they want. The idea behind this is to give the consumer the power they've always needed and deserved; and they should have. So this way, we'll roll this out add features to it over the few weeks, add more channels, and around August we'll launch the final version, with all forty channels – maybe more. I've got 5,000 VOD right now, for about $9.99 a month – the introductory price. We're going to be launching it, and you can subscribe to it, take it worldwide, and invite everybody.”

The way it comes through on a TV is via a “Smart TV with a web browser connected to it. You would go to the web site, sign up, create an account. If you don't you can connect a device to it, like a game console, or a smart phone, tablet or PC; whatever can connect to the internet and stream video, can use our system. With our picture-in-picture technology, they're data independent, which also allows you to browse, while watching TV, if you are not video conferencing. You can reshape the channels, re-size them, do a word document; search the internet, vote for your favorite reality show. Whatever you want to do, you can do with the picture-in-picture, and you can do more than one! You can have web video on one; you can have, word documents in another; you can have channels; you can video conferences – as many as you want, only relying on your band width.”

All this is possible with SimulTV. WOW!

In reference to their programming objectives, according to Turner – whose wife and adorable three year old daughter were helping out by sharing bags of freshly popped pop corn with passersby - “It's a family-friendly service. We want to make sure that it's something that anybody can watch. I have a daughter, and I want her to be able to watch it. The vision behind my company, and everything I've created is to change the world for the better. That's what we are doing with this. And a lot of people ask me, how do you do that with TV? Well, TV is your common ground. Everybody either likes or hates something on TV. You like to talk about what you like and what you don't like. With our system, you can share the experience with people.”

Using Star Trek as an example, Turner stated one could log on and watch an episode “...connect with people you don't know, see them, make the visual connection, and once you make the visual connection, you cross those borders of ethnicities, of religions, and then you don't hate people for no reason. And when you don't hate, you change the world for the better.” I truly hope he's right.

In the interim, there are several take-aways from this piece that I hope you are grasping: The tremendous opportunity to be on the ground floor of something great. The guiding principle of wanting to make a difference and change the world for the better. The possibility of doing well while doing good. The paradigm shift in content management from the crass, vast wasteland that TV has become, into something that is not only “edutainment” but community building, and barrier dissolving at the same time.

If you are interested in being part of the beta test of SimulTV, log on to www.simultv.com. They will in turn reach out and invite you to be a part of the progress. If you have program content you want to recommend, likewise email Mr. Wesley Linzy at wlinzy@imnsys.com.

Frankly, I am looking forward to the launch. With my Mom and brothers in Oklahoma City, my sister in Chicago, my kids in Philly and Virginia, and my Honey in California, this will be a wonderful opportunity to really have some great family nights!

Stay Blessed &
ECLECTICALLY BLACK
Gloria Dulan-Wilson

SimulTV and BlogWorld Expo – Something Great to Wr...

A People’s Assembly held Nov. 5 at Hostos Community College in the South Bronx launched an exciting fightback program for jobs, against racism and for the rights of workers and poor people to unions, food, healthcare, and public education.

The People’s Assembly launched an Occupy For Jobs Network to coordinate a large-scale campaign for jobs. “Occupy Wall Street has opened up space for people to do other things,” said Larry Holmes, a founder of the Bail Out the People Movement. “It is vital to open up new fronts and no front is more necessary than the fight for jobs. The underlying issue is depression level unemployment.”

A multinational crowd of more than 150 activists from organizations throughout New York and several other cities participated, including members of Occupy Wall Street, Occupy the Bronx, Occupy Philadelphia, Occupy Boston and Occupy Baltimore, as well as the South Bronx Community Congress, the Freedom Party, the Million Worker March Movement, and the Bail Out the People Movement.

An ambitious and bold series of immediate actions and long-term strategies was agreed on.
It shows the breathtaking escalation of the people’s movement in the current period:

Wednesday, Nov. 9, join the Teamsters #814 picketline at Sothebys (72nd & York)

Saturday, Nov. 12, March and rally at Woodlawn Cemetery, 1pm, to “Stop Racist and Anti-Union Abuse on the Job” (To see a Public Service Video, click here: http://youtu.be/XYjzg3h3iSI)

Thursday, Nov 17, National “Occupy for Jobs” march and rally –
in NYC “shut it down!”

Save the Postal Service – blast the hearings on Nov 21 (West Farms & E. Tremont, Bronx), Nov 22 (Lincolnton Stn, 5th Ave & 138th St, Harlem), Dec. 12 (Botanical Gardens Stn, 204th & Mosholu Pkwy, Bronx)

CUNY students WALKOUT Nov 21 (starting at 1pm at CUNY) and march to Trustees Meeting at Baruch College 4pm.

Wednesday Nov. 23, protest the Congressional Super Committee’s proposals to slash $1.2 trillion+ from the federal budget. Mobilize to stop the closing of thousands of post offices, which would involve slashing 250,000 postal worker jobs, as some in Congress are advocating.

Tuesday, Dec 6, Occupy for Housing (more info to come on time and place)

Thursday, Dec 8, Freedom & Justice Organizing School, Teamsters Local 808, 22-43 Jackson Ave, Queens, 6:30pm. (7 Train to 45th Rd & Courthouse Sq; G or E to Court Sq) (More info: www.millionworkermarch.org)

January 14-16 – Martin Luther King holiday weekend: Nationally coordinated actions to demand a massive Public Works Program to provide jobs at union wages for the more than 30 unemployed and underemployed workers in the country.

Sharon Black, a member of the All People’s Congress in Baltimore, said the Occupy For Jobs Network will do whatever is necessary to expand the fight for jobs in order to be effective:

“If they go to shutdown a workplace, what should we do? Occupy! If they try to shut down post offices what should we do? Occupy,” she declared. “If they try to do anything against workers the rest of us have got to unite and take action.”

The People’s Assembly took place at Hostos College, the site of an historic occupation in 1976. Ramon Jimenez, a founder of the South Bronx Community Congress and a participant in that occupation, said students occupied the school for 20 days when the city announced it was going to close it. They won the battle to keep the school open. “It all took place because people fought back, struggled and occupied,” Jimenez said.

Recent and on-going actions emphasized the themes of the People’s Assembly:

Aminifu Williams of People’s Organization for Progress, based in Newark, NJ, reported that POP has protested in downtown Newark for 130 days in a row calling for a national jobs program like the Work Projects Administration. Launched by the Roosevelt Administration, the WPA employed millions of people in the construction of buildings, roads, bridges, and schools, as well as in arts and literary projects.

The Jobless Working Group of Occupy Wall Street held a march to subway stations on Oct. 28 to demand that the Metropolitan Transit Authority provide free fares for the unemployed.

Occupy Latin America, which is within Occupy Wall Street en Español of OWS is holding a March on Nov. 20 focused on women’s rights.

The Immigrant Rights Working Group of OWS is planning a march at Zuccotti Park on immigrant rights.

The initial signers of the call for an Occupy For Jobs Network include the Bail Out the People Movement; Frantz Mendez, president, USW Local 8751 Boston School Bus Union; Chris Silvera, Secretary-Treasurer Teamsters Local 808; Former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney; Teresa Gutierrez, co-coordinator of the May 1st Coalition for Immigrant and Workers Rights; Larry Adams, Vice President of People’s Organization for Progress and former president, National Postal Mail Handlers Local 300; and the Occupy Wall Street Jobless Working Group.

Workshops on Education Rights and Fighting Poverty and Violence resolved on the following long- and near-term goals and strategies:

Organize at schools – get parents, HS students and all school workers & community. Build grassroots so we’re ready to occupy.

Teachers: bring in a union leadership that reflects the community.

MEMO: THE RAMEY RULEBY MIKE RAMEYI wanted to give a solid ‘shout out’ to those warriors who have volunteered to contend with young men on a regular basis about their sagging pants. Of course, I am still amazed of the longevity of this rather ‘brief’ matter--but I digress!I’ve seen some rather interesting battles and discussions between adults and teens about the need for keep pants pulled up to regulation level. I’ve heard of adults shouting at teens, and teens shouting back at adults over ‘my rights.’ I’ve read a variety of columns about school dress codes and why students--even at the college level--need to ‘adult up’ with proper dressing habits. As I sat down to pen my column this month, I found the issue raging in my neck of the woods. Several adults and teens have wound up in trouble with the law over adults laying down the rules and teens rebelling against them--sometimes to the point of exchanging words and punches. This ought not to be.IT STARTS AT HOME:The old adage is true: If the home will not teach, society can not compensate.Teens--by nature--are slippery and rebellious. Many of us who are adults now were teens not that long ago. Ican remember my own times of rebellion--and how my parents responded to them. Sometimes with a talking to; sometimes with punishment, and sometimes with a firm administration of the board of education to the seat of knowledge. I--and others--learned a healthy, godly fear of dad and mom.And all the parents said: AMEN!Sure, the times ‘may’ be different. Let’s be honest! How many of us have come across ‘trifling’ parents? They DO exist and get lots of airplay and ink. You’ve seen them on TV shows from Judge Judy to Jerry Springer! Parents who seem to have been ‘frozen’ in their very own rebellious streaks from their adolescent years--with frozen brains to match. The results are STILL the same if a minority of the parents do NOT teach or when a minority of teens will NOT listen! The twin brothers of chaos and rebellion rule, firmly replacing opportunities for the direct education and advancement of our children.Sad. Just truly S-A-D.I recall one time during my stint as a probation officer. A female parent came to the juvenile court dressed like a stripper heading for work. Needless to say, the bailiffs would not let her into court on her child’s case…because of the court’s dress code. And…we wonder where the children get it from?STEREOTYPES--AND TRUTH:Make no mistake about it. The pants sagging issue--and its attempt at justification--are firmly rooted in rebellion. Saggers are proud that they ‘sag’--but don’t want to face the consequences of doing it ‘their way’. Unfortunately, we live in an era where consequences are expected to be ‘brushed’ off to the side without comment from the society at large. Commit a crime, and have a hundred letters and videos to ‘explain’ your right to harm someone else. Commit adultery and go off to make your next movie. Carry a few guns into a sporting venue and get shocked by being suspended from your pro team. From a biblical perspective, let me ‘clue’ the brotherhood to a reality: The consequences of rebellion ‘may’ be delayed, but are seldom denied. God’s judgments may be slow in coming, but pack a punch when they arrive! In truth, if one does NOT learn the lessons of being a responsible child at home--whether it’s headed by two-parents, one parent, or a loving guardian--you’ll be reduced to being judged as a stereotype by the society at large.Society--like teenage friends--can be CRUEL in their label placement!Brothers, if you sag, you fit the stereotype. Fair is fair; but REAL is REAL! In most of our world today, stereotypes represent reality. It’s not ONLY how ‘you are seen’, but how you are ‘perceived’ WHILE you are being seen! As a father myself from the old school, rest assured that a sagger may not make it to my tree lawn--let alone my porch--if he dares to date my daughter!THE SOLUTION? THE RAMEY RULE!For all you saggers out there who are getting upset at me blasting away with this column, I issue the following invitation. Call it a ‘public challenge’ to test my writing. Go to any local company or job fair with your ‘sag wear’ and ask for a job application and/or an interview. If the people around you don’t move away from you in rapid fashion, you will ‘get the hint’ that your wardrobe is not appropriate from the employers! They will GLADLY find any excuse to have you file your application--by mail! Here is my solution to the sagging problem. I call it the ‘Ramey Rule’. It operates on the simple principle that the best way to get to the ‘heart’ of a sagger is to get him to turn his brain on! Yelling does not work. Drive-by ‘orders’ from adults to ‘pull up’ one’s pants does not work. Dress codes and sanctions have limited impact (as sagging has become not only a ‘fashion statement’ but the flag of youth). How to get their attention? Change your tactics! Couple wisdom of economic reality with the truths of stereotyping in the application of the ‘Ramey Rule’ which is spoken as follows: “The LOWER the pants, the LOWER the IQ is perceived to BE!”Think about it! Saggers do NOT work for law firms, Black Enterprise Magazine, IBM, Microsoft, your local school corporation or Beatrice Foods. Saggers DO work for strip mall mobile phone stores and hip-hop head shops. Saggers may ‘start out’ with good grades, but slovenly and sloppy will eventually ‘overtake’ their academic progress. Saggers won’t be able to ask if I want ‘fries with that’, as many fast food chains have a nasty way of dealing with sloppy employees.Just keep reminding saggers of these future facts, and you will see a gradual rise--at least during daylight hours--of pants back to where they should be. IF they don’t appreciate your comments, saggers will soon experience the consequences of rebellion. It’s called ‘Long Term Unemployment’!RAMEY is the Pastor of The Forward Church, Indianapolis, Indiana.
Vantage Point
Articles and Essays by Dr. Ron Daniels
There is a rebellion against Washington brewing across the land, and that’s bad news for President Obama and the Democrats. Unemployment is 10.2% and climbing. According to a recent poll, some 30% of American families are feeling the pain of the dramatic downturn in the economy, which has produced the highest level of joblessness in decades. Never mind that the devastating economic collapse was inherited by President Obama; what people care about is whether they see the government addressing their pain, whether any visible actions are being taken that give them hope that their job opportunities will improve in the near future. While growing joblessness is the issue uppermost in the minds of millions of Americans, what they are witnessing in Washington is a protracted and divisive struggle over health care reform. And, on Wall Street, people are flabbergasted to see the stock market rising, bank and investment company profits soaring and monstrous bonuses for employees of the very companies whose reckless behavior precipitated the economic crisis. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of people continue to lose their homes as the depression in the mortgage industry continues.
It is not that health care reform is irrelevant. In a nation where nearly 50 million people do not have health care and the prices of premiums continue to skyrocket, health care reform unquestionably must be a major national priority. Indeed, President Obama is correct to argue that the long term well being of the economy depends on bending the cost curve for health care downward. The problem is that people are less concerned about health care reform when their families and communities are being ravaged by joblessness. In this regard, there appears to be a dangerous disconnect between the Obama administration and Main Street.
Unfortunately, the brewing rebellion is yet another consequence of the timidity of President Obama in dealing with the huge crisis he inherited from the Bush-Cheney administration. Some argue that he has his priorities backward because the economy does not appear to be at the top of the agenda. For those who hold that view, it may be useful to remember that health care reform was not the first issue President Obama targeted for action/resolution; it was the economy. The first months of his administration were devoted to rolling out a new economic stimulus package and bail out packages designed to rescue the ailing financial, auto and mortgage sectors of the economy. But as Paul Krugman has repeatedly pointed out, President Obama’s stimulus package was too small to achieve the kind of job generation required to ameliorate the pain around the country.
Now President Obama is in a terrible bind. An inadequate stimulus package is “stimulating” far too slowly to reverse the tide of joblessness spreading across the country at a time when he is compelled to push through some form of health care reform legislation. After months of investing major political capital in this effort, the failure to produce something, no matter how modest, would be disastrous. The Republicans, who are determined to see him fail, are getting traction by howling about the lack of results of the stimulus package, the growing deficit and expansion of government. Sensing a political opening with the 2010 mid-term elections approaching, they are opportunistically tapping into and fueling the rage boiling across the country over the issue of jobs.
The question is how will President Obama and the Democrats respond. The President is scheduled to convene a Jobs Summit in the very near future, and that is a step in the right direction. However, it is not likely that the anger across the country will be abated by mere summitry. If there was ever a time for President Obama to be bold and decisive, it’s now. He needs to unveil a substantial job generating stimulus package and dare Republicans and vacillating “Blue Dog” Democrats to oppose it. And, he needs to be bold enough to propose that public service employment/jobs be an integral component of the initiative.
There was a time when Democrats routinely advocated that the government be an “employer of last resort.” With the successful Republican assault on “big government” and “social programs” beginning with the Reagan era, the idea of public service jobs as a remedy for unemployment disappeared from the political discourse. Democrats were cowered into refusing to consider initiatives that the Republicans might label as liberal “tax and spend” government proposals. However, the current crisis offers President Obama and the Democrats a golden opportunity to resurrect the concept of a full employment economy with public service jobs being part of the formula. Whether it is in a blue state or red state, most sane Americans want a job, no matter who provides it, that will allow them to bring home some green. So, rather than cower and be timid, President Obama and the Democrats should seize the moment to deliver a desperately needed jobs initiative and educate the American public on the importance of government as an employer of last resort in times of crisis.
President Obama now faces a critical moment of truth in his young presidency. With a rebellion brewing across the country because of massive joblessness, he must act boldly or the Republicans will ride the wave of discontent to an astonishing victory in the 2010 elections. A party whose philosophy and policies provoked the greatest economic catastrophe since the Great Depression and was repudiated by the voters in 2008 will likely regain control of the House and Senate, rendering the duration of President Obama’s tenure miserable. It is an ironic circumstance which can and must be prevented with bold leadership by President Obama and the Democrats.

We have started a listserv elist yahoo group to begin to build a structure communication tool for the parents of color to the way the leaders of this group tap into this list.please join in the discussion as needed...This time of the year, shaky tax preparers get rich. Many low income folks use the corner store tax company that pops up in December and breaks down the offices on April 15th. This is one of the many reasons being contented to a parents group is life changing. Everyone needs a network; it could be family, at work or in the hood. The more networks the better. The training and education programs come and go. Members of Parent Partner are planning to be around a while. We have 2100 members in 10 months. Everyday folks and professionals are on this list. I am glad that I can turn to so many people to assist with questions I have about housing, jobs, child care, health and so many other life issues. Please sign up and read the Parent Partner newsletter on a daily basis. Why (U) should Join Philly Parent PartnerThere are a large percentage of Parents working diligently to prepare them selves for new careers. The economy does not help at this time in our life span. However in the past week new issues have surfaced. First there is now stock of affordable housing, I mean none. Unless you are A1 with 700 and above credit score and a 35 - 40 k income as a single parent with 2-4 children it is nearly impossible. Most people find it hard to find and hold on to gainful employment with out supports. These supports can come from many places, family, in laws, community, employer co workers the list goes on and on.Thus the Philly Parent Partner was born, it has a simple mission.A group for Philadelphia parents who have found employment or are now seeking employment through a welfare-to-work program in Philadelphia and want additional information related to helping their kids in school and in the community. Welfare-to-work helps parents get jobs. The Philadelphia Parent Partner list helps parents support their children. Both are needed to insure success in the workplace and the community.Check out what was uncovered while acting as resource person. Firstparent was referred to me and was in tears. Rent was due on Monday,2/2/09, she was complaining about the amount of cash that she receivedfrom public assistance. She stated that the amount was $100 short ofwhat she expected. Which meant she would be short on the rent due? While doing a short intake on the family additional informationsurfaced. She had paid the first month and last month as securitydeposit. So the February payment would have been her first realpayment. The arrangement was all verbal, no lease or receipts. She was terrified that she would come home and her belongings would beoutside on the pavement. That is how this landlord works when tenantsdon't pay rent. There are four units in the building.I did a search and found out the building belongs to the city ofPhiladelphia not the landlord. Further research uncovered he livesnear and is behind on his taxes, the property he owns is in tax lienstatus. But the parent like many others are saving up enough cash tosecure a housing unit and pay what is due to get in and then realizesthat the work that the parent said she/he would do was more than theycould handle. Also the landlord had no intension of fixing the unit aswell. One suggestion was to start a escrow account and stop in to seeCommunity Legal Services, the TURN (formerly Tenant Action Group). The second case was a bit different. This parent was in tears as well, another referral and this parent was crying about living in a unitwhere the heater was un repairable. she pulled out a PECO bill for $650due to using electric heaters to cook and stay warm. Her monthly rent was way over her budget and had a hand writteneviction notice written on line paper. It stated that she owes $1200,it was itemize and had a date for payment in full or eviction. Thetears started to roll as we mapped out a plan. I checked to see was the eviction court date scheduled? It was not however the parents name came up and it had 4 instances where she had been sued and evicted by four different landlords since 2004. A pattern was clear; she stated she seems to have this happen to her, ohno not again. One bright spot was that the Pathways and friendsneighborhood guild co locates at the agency and they can get somerepair guidance and financial counseling.Once again over and over many parents are renting above their means tomeet the obligations, projecting that they will have a job and get ontheir feet in 30 - 60 days. The city of Philadelphia has a huge stock pile of student housing, shared space but not lease or rental properties available. This housing uncertainty has the child on the move and or do not attend school at all. There is a underground society present that the main stream community do not know exist. What is in the future? Stimulus money could help to expand the public housingunits? What...Why should parents join Philly Parent PartnerRe: Affordable housing in Philadelphia (NONE)As a Social Worker at CLS I see this crisis everyday too. I help our client’s complete subsidized housing applications when it becomes clear they can no longer afford rent and utilities and the only way they can make ends meet (or stay out of a shelter) is to have their rent pegged to 30% of their income. Market rate rents for our clients are usually well over 50% or even 75% of their income. Even if one can ride out the long waiting lists of Project-based Section 8 apartments, if a family has poor credit (most do because they have to live off of something) or even an old criminal record they will be rejected - this is from HUD-funded subsidized housing!! The other group of people I help with applications (including writing a recommendation letter and preparing the verification need for the often enormous application) are those who have lost/are losing their homes to foreclosure - they simply don't have the money to remain in their homes even if they refinance or make some other kind of deal with the mortgage company. Another group are those who must make major repairs to their homes to make them habitable. They often cannot wait a year or more on PHDC's BSRP waiting list and cannot afford repairs that often go into the tens of thousands.Clearly the problem is as you said: there is not enough SUBSIDIZED housing. Yes, there has been some "affordable" housing built over the last decade, but there is no subsidy to make rent affordable for people at or below 125% of the poverty line. Having said this more should be done to ensure that Project-based section 8 units relax their unreasonable application rejections based on credit, or at the very least take into consideration that many applicants have been victims of predatory loans, unscrupulous landlords, or have had a razor thin margin of error in margin their financial lives in general. To reject people out-of-hand for poor credit flies in the face of the spirit of what subsidized housing is all about - providing people with a decent place to live with dignity - an opportunity to live within one's income without fear of being out on the street. I would really appreciate speaking to others who would like to talk about / work on the issue of encouraging HUD to relax the rigorous credit checks that are standard practice at most Project-based Section 8 units.
