No one who I can think of has taken a truly contemporary look at traditional blues with the musical and lyrical intensity of Billy Jones. Almost as impresisive as their live show are the musician's foundations as backing players for the who's who of classic and contemporary soul music.

NEW YORK – The GroovaLottos Phunk Party @ SOB's is proving to be one of the music scene buzzes of New York City for the Labor Day weekend. First coming to international attention in 2016 with their debut single, "Do You Mind (IfWeDanceWitYoDates)?" spending 41 weeks in the top ten of the Indie Blues/Americana Charts; being selected to open the 2017 Gathering of Nations Powwow, playing for almost 48,000 people; and their 2017 debut album "Ask Yo' Mama" receiving 4 Grammy nominations in Pop and R&B, their name is spreading beyond the venues and festivals of New England. New York City got a small taste of the band's sound when they staged guerilla concerts in Union Square Park and Time Square this past July, causing hundreds of New Yorkers and summer tourists to dance in the streets.

Known as a powerhouse band that packs dance floors, equally impressive are the resumes of the individuals members, two of whom have played for a who's who list of classic and contemporary soul artists. At the age of 19, drummer Eddie Ray Johnson became a much sought after touring sub drummer, having played for Rufus Thomas, Wilson Pickett, Bobby Bland and West Side Soul; while keyboardist Mwalim DaPhunkee Professor has such artists as Angie Stone, The Four Tops, and a myriad of r&b, hip-hop, and house music studio sessions under his belt. Both Mwalim and bassist, Richard Johnson played at Carnegie Hall before they were in high school, and Mwalim was one of the youngest session players in EMI Record history. Percussionist and MC, The ZYG 808, who is 15 and on the rise as a solo hip-hop artist played his first studio session at 7 and was headlining the Boston Jazz Fest at age 12.

Labor Day weekend brings The GroovaLottos back to New York City where S.O.B.'s will be the place to be.

For tickets and information, visit:
http://tinyurl.com/tgnyc

The GroovaLottos Bring The Party to Provincetown @ Focsicleshttps://www.theblacklist.net/profiles/blogs/the-groovalottos-bring-the-party-to-provincetown-focsicles2018-05-29T12:00:00.000Z2018-05-29T12:00:00.000ZMwalim *7) DaPhunkeeProfessorhttps://www.theblacklist.net/members/Mwalim7DaPhunkeeProfessor

The Phunk Hits 2018 summer concert tour is in full swing and the next stop is Focsicles in Provincetown, this coming Saturday.

The next stop on the party train is on Saturday, June 2 at Focsicles at the Governor Bradford, 312 Commercial Street, Provincetown. Mwalim turned it up slightly and began to sing along and even started scatting as Simone's rapid-fire, Pentacostal church styled piano solo danced around her vocal invocations of "power".

Mwalim explained that the legendary jazz singer and pianist had a major effect on his development as a pianist and singer. "When I was trying to figure out how to play and sing at the same time, it was listening to my mother's and grandparent's Nina Simone albums that helped me figure it out." Nina Simone, who was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon, was a church raised, classically trained concert pianist who began playing jazz, blues and soul at cocktail lounges in Atlantic City and the Greenwich Village section of New York. Her signature contralto to low tenor vocals neatly woven into her percussive piano playing style became an iconic elements in the jazz world.

"We have the same vocal range, so it was easier for me to find my voice in her style than it was in singers like Ray Charles or Joe Tex." Mwalim, who began his career as a studio session player and accompanist, had not sang in public until he was in his mid twenties, prior to that serving as a vocal coach for singers in the various bands that eh played with. One night the singer for a band didn't show up for the gig, leaving Mwalim to front as the singer for the night. "I made it through the night doing a Nina Simone impersonation... of course, she never sang 'Groove Me' by Guy, but singing it the way she would was a lot easier for me than trying to sound like Aaron Hall."

Building off of Simone's platform, Mwalim went on to win awards for his vocal work in jazz, including three Urban Music Awards, four Silver Arrow Awards, three Native American Music Award nominations, and of course The GroovaLottos four Grammy nominations. "The only thing," added Eddie Ray Johnson, "was that all we knew were about 4 or five songs... completely. We also knew a couple of Mwalim's originals; but otherwise, we barely had a complete set. The next rehearsal, Mwalim casually mentions that we had two gigs coming up, both on the same day."

On March 12, 2011, for the first time, The GroovaLottos loaded their instruments into their vehicles and unloaded at the Tilden Arts Center of Cape Cod Community College in West Barnstable and made their public debut at the Multicultural Arts Festival. "That was only a 25 minute set, so we were fine," recalls Eddie Ray. Later that night, they unloaded at a pub in Falmouth, did soundcheck and went out for a bite before the 10pm gig.

"All through dinner, Jamie and Nick were stressing about our lack of songs to fill a gig that ran from 10pm to 1am. To add to the pressure, the Cape Cod Times had placed us as 'Best Bet' for the weekend, so folks were going to come hear us," laughed Mwalim. While Jamie Wolf had been a session player for Motown in the late 1960's, as well as a touring blues player, usually fronting his own bands; Mwalim and Eddie Ray had also been touring and session players and Mwalim relied on some incite that the late, great Atlantic Records promotions man, Clarence Bullard, "If you know four chord progressions, you know 4 million songs." Also having backgrounds as jazz players, they were able to insert solos and shift feels of the songs to stretch them out.

"we were able to make it through all three sets, using the same chord changes several times and just changing the arrangement, words and melodies," added Eddie Ray. "Between the 12-bar blues, the 'Shake It Up Baby' chord changes, and 'Ain't Misbehavin' chords, we were able to play tons of soul, blues, rock, and pop tunes by Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin, Barry White, Curtis Mayfield, Muddy Waters, Charles Wright, and The Isley Brothers," explained Mwalim.

Here we are, almost seven years later and the band has a set list of over 200 songs, over 30 of which are originals, including the tunes on their Grammy nominated debut album, "Ask Yo' Mama". Even their cover tunes are distinctly 'GroovaLotto', soaked in their signature soul-funk-blues style.

UPCOMING Shows with The GroovaLottos:

March 17 & April 21 - Soul Night @ Gilda's Stone Rooster
27 Wareham Rd, Marion, MA - 9PM

March 10, April 14, May 19- Coffeehouse Soul Sessions @ Dedham Square Coffeehouse
565 High St, Dedham, MA - 8PM

To follow the GroovaLottos, visit:
http://www.thegroovalottos.com

Mwalim DaPhunkee Professor signs with Spirit Wind Records. As it is the nature of Spirit Wind Records to give complete creative control to it’s artists, this project will be a co-release between LMMGM and Spirit Wind. In November, Mwalim e-mailed a zip file of rough mixes to Donald Blackfox for final approval, who responded “Just listened to the tracks I love them My kind of music. Great Job.” adding the proposed album to Spirit Wind’s release roster for winter of 2014.

The album is to help raise consciousness of the Indigenous led, Idle No More Movement.

Just Is...
