No one who I can think of has taken a truly contemporary look at traditional blues with the musical and lyrical intensity of Billy Jones. Mwalim turned it up slightly and began to sing along and even started scatting as Simone's rapid-fire, Pentacostal church styled piano solo danced around her vocal invocations of "power".</p><p>Mwalim explained that the legendary jazz singer and pianist had a major effect on his development as a pianist and singer. "When I was trying to figure out how to play and sing at the same time, it was listening to my mother's and grandparent's Nina Simone albums that helped me figure it out." Nina Simone, who was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon, was a church raised, classically trained concert pianist who began playing jazz, blues and soul at cocktail lounges in Atlantic City and the Greenwich Village section of New York. Her signature contralto to low tenor vocals neatly woven into her percussive piano playing style became an iconic elements in the jazz world.</p><p>"We have the same vocal range, so it was easier for me to find my voice in her style than it was in singers like Ray Charles or Joe Tex." Mwalim, who began his career as a studio session player and accompanist, had not sang in public until he was in his mid twenties, prior to that serving as a vocal coach for singers in the various bands that eh played with. One night the singer for a band didn't show up for the gig, leaving Mwalim to front as the singer for the night. "I made it through the night doing a Nina Simone impersonation... of course, she never sang 'Groove Me' by Guy, but singing it the way she would was a lot easier for me than trying to sound like Aaron Hall."</p><p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/WoCqlBnVTfM?wmode=opaque" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></p><p>Building off of Simone's platform, Mwalim went on to win awards for his vocal work in jazz, including three Urban Music Awards, four Silver Arrow Awards, three Native American Music Award nominations, and of course The GroovaLottos four Grammy nominations. In addition, Simone's work as a Civil Right activist also had an impact on The GroovaLottos commitment to social and economic justice.</p><p>The GroovaLottos will be at Gilda's Stone Rooster on March 17. 27 Wareham Rd, Marion, MA. The band wondered if the show was going to be a bust, only to arrive at the hall and find out that people had been calling the venue all day to find out if the show was still happening. "We were still doing sound check and they had to open the house because there were so many folks waiting to get in. Early arrivals got treated to a funky blues jam. The next rehearsal, Mwalim casually mentions that we had two gigs coming up, both on the same day."</span><br /> <br /> <span>On March 12, 2011, for the first time, The GroovaLottos loaded their instruments into their vehicles and unloaded at the Tilden Arts Center of Cape Cod Community College in West Barnstable and made their public debut at the Multicultural Arts Festival. "That was only a 25 minute set, so we were fine," recalls Eddie Ray. Later that night, they unloaded at a pub in Falmouth, did soundcheck and went out for a bite before the 10pm gig.</span></p><p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/w_Kv9L2lxlM?wmode=opaque" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe> <br /> <br /> <span>"All through dinner, Jamie and Nick were stressing about our lack of songs to fill a gig that ran from 10pm to 1am. To add to the pressure, the Cape Cod Times had placed us as 'Best Bet' for the weekend, so folks were going to come hear us," laughed Mwalim. While Jamie Wolf had been a session player for Motown in the late 1960's, as well as a touring blues player, usually fronting his own bands; Mwalim and Eddie Ray had also been touring and session players and Mwalim relied on some incite that the late, great Atlantic Records promotions man, Clarence Bullard, "If you know four chord progressions, you know 4 million songs." Also having backgrounds as jazz players, they were able to insert solos and shift feels of the songs to stretch them out.</span></p><p><span>"we were able to make it through all three sets, using the same chord changes several times and just changing the arrangement, words and melodies," added Eddie Ray. "Between the 12-bar blues, the 'Shake It Up Baby' chord changes, and 'Ain't Misbehavin' chords, we were able to play tons of soul, blues, rock, and pop tunes by Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin, Barry White, Curtis Mayfield, Muddy Waters, Charles Wright, and The Isley Brothers," explained Mwalim.<br /><br />Here we are, almost seven years later and the band has a set list of over 200 songs, over 30 of which are originals, including the tunes on their Grammy nominated debut album, "Ask Yo' Mama". The GroovaLottos are no strangers to this in their past lives and it's the same story now. As your popularity grows, so does the length of your journey and the time spent, which are good things, but it's a lot of travel time.</p><p>This time on the road is when a band's inner language develops. Background conversations that lead to public code words and cues. One such situation is the mutual love of Looney Tunes that the members of this Grammy nominated band share. Favorite quotes and lines from Looney Tunes characters are thrown around regularly and prove to be appropriate responses to many of life's situations. "This is a big part of what makes up the Phunk." explains, Eddie Ray. "The Phunk is the music we make, the lives we live, the way we communicate, the audience dancing... it's all part of the Phunk."</p><p>Oddly enough, the true irony of this came to a head when the band went on the road to Albuquerque, NM last April when they played the Gathering Of Nations Powwow and took the time to explore their surroundings. We need your support! Here are some of the reasons why..
<b><u>MISSISSIPPI</u></b>
The epicenter of America’s “legacy of pain”
The time has come for all “good” citizens of the State of Mississippi to take a stand and do what is right. “The Deep South,” the region, far exceeds demonstrative acts of intolerance on its citizens than all other regions combined, in the United States of America. Mississippi’s Delta, where cotton was king, is “the” epicenter of that pain. Here is where we find the “Blues People.”
The Blues People, particularly those in Mississippi, have endured suffering from the moment they were chained and captured in their native land and held in dungeons, in unimaginable conditions, for months and years, before departing on a voyage that would alter their future forever. It was on those voyages that they became Blues People looking for an escape to freedom…some through the salty waters of the Atlantic Ocean, others through bloody revolt and still others through the power of will…willing death into their own captive bodies, so their spirits could soar and return to the place where somebody was singing their name in a song, in a blues song…till it was heard in the sun-soaked cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta!
Oh my Lord, oh my Lord what shall I do, what shall I do?
The beneficiaries of the “legacy of pain” i.e., Mississippi and the United States of America must do what is true, just and right…they shall apologize, if only for the following:
• For the over five hundred “documented” lynching deaths of African American (Black) people that make Mississippi the most egregious of all offenders in the United States of America.
• For all those years of torment and torture in the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta, not to mention the legal disregard of the pain suffered by people in the United States of America.
• For not allowing any African American (Black) people onto the rescue canoes, during the 1927 flood, and for reverting back to a slave-master mindset, when presented with a clear opportunity to respect the dignity and life of all flood victims, who were rightful citizens of good standing in the United States of America.
• For the death of Emmitt Till, which launched the Human/Civil Rights Movement, throughout the United States of America.
• For not ratifying the “Anti-Slavery” bill until 1985, making Mississippi the last state in the United States of America to legally acknowledge the system of slavery was over.
• For the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in the United States of America.
• For consistently having the worst statistics regarding health and education; and, for putting young children off school buses (along roadsides) and out of school houses (in the middle of a school day) in 2008, who were proudly acknowledging the historic accomplishments of President-elect Barack Obama in the United States of America.
Can we humane and good citizens of THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA remain silent and inactive when such things are continuously being done in our name? It is our duty to humanity…is Mississippi less binding than those in other places? Lawmakers know it is a well-established principle that every wrong has a remedy. Herein rests our Nation’s respect for law.
…What shall we do…?
Mississippi’s therapy and racial healing begins like any other…with an apology…and ends with you. Take personal responsibility for the process of learning the true and persistent pain of Blues People; and, the realization for potential greatness that awaits us…
