The media and lovers of art are invited to the opening of TIZITA Fine Art Exhibition during Miami Art Basel, to be held on December 5th at 10AM at All Soul’s Episcopal Church in Miami Beach @ 4025 Pine Tree Drive 33140 with a traditional Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony followed by TIZITA ART TALK WITH Artists Desta Hagos, Merid Tafesse and Tigist Selam and Curators Ludlow Bailey and Desta Meghoo. The panel will discuss artists' experiences and expressions; the impact and progress of Ethiopian and African contemporary art and the significance of Africa participating in international exhibits such as Basel. The exhibit is curated by Ethiopian based Dr. Desta Meghoo in collaboration with well-known Miami Art Consultant Ludlow Bailey of CADA.
TIZITA is an Ethiopian word for both a feeling of nostalgia as well as an indigenous genre of music comparable to the Blues. A first for Miami, this diverse collection featuring the works of five Ethiopian artists and one African American born artist exposes a spectrum of deep emotions from historic triumphs and travels to devastating trials. TIZITA proffers eclectic interpretations and perspectives of the past, present and future through the lens of renowned and rising artists including Desta Hagos, Daniel Taye and Merid Tafesse; Ermias Mazengia and Mathias Lulu, who both sadly passed away in 2013 and newcomer Birhan Tonge.
Desta Meghoo J.D., former Managing Director of the Bob Marley Foundation, is known for acclaimed exhibitions curated over the past three years at the National Museum of Ethiopia including Embassy of Portugal’s Bridges International Collection, US Embassy’s Art of African American Women: 19th – 21st Centuries and Ras Tafari: The Majesty & the Movement, called “...blockbuster exhibit of the year...” by the New York Times in 2014. Ludlow Bailey is a graduate from both Brown and Columbia Universities whose fellowships in Ghana, Senegal and Egypt, exposed him to traditional and contemporary African art. Doubling as a dealer and curator (many times art journalist as well), Ludlow is well informed on current tendencies in the international art market and has created CADA, Contemporary African Diaspora Art, as a platform to expose, share and promote art from Africa and the Diaspora.
TIZITA is listed as an official Miami Beaches and Visitors Bureau Art of Black event at www.miamiandbeaches.com/events/art-of-black. Tizita is free and open to the public on Saturday, December 5th with the Ethiopian Embassy officiating the opening at 10AM followed by an Art Talk at 1130 am. Finally, the evening will include an exclusive invitation only traditional cocktail reception with the music and flavours of Ethiopia, sponsored by D.Y.M.D.C., CADA, Marley Coffee, and The Exchange Project Inc from 7 pm to 10 pm.
