. Building Bridges joins OWS in Brownsville, East New York where community

residents, indeed a community that has been assaulted by the highest rate of

stop and frisks in the city tells the NYPD hell no more to profiling, harassment

and criminalization of African-American and Latino youth.

. OWS welcomes the Black United Front after its historic march over the

Brooklyn Bridge, 33 years to the date to Liberty Square reiterating its demands

against institutional racism, as it delivers supplies to and supports OWS.

. Neither Rain Nor Snow Stop the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, the

Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, and the Asian, Pacific

American Labor Alliance rally and march for OWS.

. OWS Protesters Arrested at Goldman Sachs Headquarters in NY:

as they chant “Crooks & Thieves, Protected By Police! The Criminals Are Inside!”

Greek Tragedy, Europe’s Achilles Heel?

As the G-20 economic summit met in Cannes last week, austerity was sweeping

Europe, the future of the Eurozone was in doubt and the Greek government was

on the verge of collapse over its proposed new debt agreement with the European

Union. The deal was reached by European leaders to stabilize the Euro and to

avoid Greek default on its debt to the banks or its leaving the euro currency zone.

Anger among Greek citizens stems from the proposed agreement’s focus on

more austerity to repay the bank loans leading to increased unemployment. A

new world recession may be drawing closer after the G-20 failed to agree on

fresh financial help for distressed countries and debt ridden Italy was forced to

agree to the International Monetary Fund monitoring of its austerity program.

Wal-Mart workers' D.C. Coalition members who along with Wal-Mart-Free NYC

. OWS occupies Tweed Hall as the People’s General Assembly on Public Education

raises its voice at the outrage at the lack of public representation in decisions of

educational policy, and the creation of a people’s agenda for our schools.

. Building Bridges joins locked-out Sotheby’s Local 814 Teamsters who have held

strong against Sotheby’s auction house corporate greed for four months. Despite

making record profits last year, the auction house is demanding wage and benefit cuts,

and the replacement of skilled, union workers with unskilled, non-union temporary

workers. Hey union busting is disgusting!

. OWS welcomed the Respect DC Coalition who along with Walmart-Free NYC
told developer Related who seeks to build a Wal-Mart store in East New York that
Wal-Mart’s business practices, its salary and benefit levels, anti-union policies, its

training and promotion, regarding people of color and women, and environmental

concerns were rejected. Hell no Wal-Mart, not in NYC!

Many Voices, One Goal, Passing The Fair Wages For New Yorkers Act!
With
Minister Edison Bond, Jr., activist Living Wage campaign
and
Desiree Pilgrim-Hunter, activist living Wage campaign

            “Now is the time to make an adequate income a reality for all of
            God's children, now is the time for city hall to take a position for
            that which is just and honest." -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The struggle for economic justice, which was effectively derailed 43 years ago with

the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is back on track! A living wage is a

wage which is based upon the cost of living in an area, rather than an arbitrary minimum.

Under an ideal living wage, someone who works an ordinary 40 hour per week job would

be able to afford shelter, food, health care, and other basic necessities of life. Now,

there’s a growing movement to pass living wage ordinances in cities throughout the world.

In the U.S., this movement began in 1994, when a community-labor coalition mobilized a

successful grassroots campaign to pass the nation's first ”living wage” law in Baltimore.

Since then, more than 140 U.S. cities have followed suit. Now, it should be New Yorkers

turn to provide good jobs, with a living wage, not keep people in poverty and we can if we

pass the Fair Wages For New Yorkers Act.

The Band of Brothers, workers at the posh Woodlawn Cemetery, joined by OWS chanted

“Bury racism at Woodlawn Cemetery” in the northwest Bronx to expose the long history of

racism at the cemetery. The protest was part of a three-year campaign led by the Band of

Brothers, who have appealed for community support against discrimination at Woodlawn.

One placard reflected another part of their struggle: “Respect the workers — let them unionize.”
