On Sunday, January 15th, the Peoples Organization for Progress will rally the Daily People’s Campaign for Jobs, Peace, Equality and Justice to march and observe the birth of the immortal Drum Major for Justice, Martin Luther King Jr. with a ‘March for Economic Justice and Voter’s Rights’!
It will take place on what will be day 203 of the Daily People’s Campaign.
Participants will assemble at the Lincoln Monument on Springfield Av and W Market St, the principle rally site of the Daily People’s Campaign, at 2pm and will march to City Hall.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929.
The Daily People’s Campaign now has over 140 organizations, churches and unions who have signed on to the Campaign.
“In this age of occupation movements, let us remember that Dr. King spent his last birthday on this earth organizing an occupation movement that he called ‘The Poor People’s Campaign,’” said an emphatic Lawrence Hamm.
‘The Poor People’s Campaign’ was an occupation of the nation’s capital. It would ultimately be led by the late Rev. Ralph Abernathy. It took place after Dr. King’s tragic assassination in 1968.
In a renewed commitment to voter’s rights, the Daily People’s Campaign will also begin a voter’s registration drive that will become a part of the overall daily actions.
This latest development comes in the wake of resistance some states trying to implement voter ids and purging their rolls of thousands of registered voters in the process.
The NAACP hosted a rally on international human rights day, December 10th, to dramatize this new battle. POP participated in that rally.
“Sadly, many are using the election of President Obama as the justification for a full-scale attack on voter protections,” explained Hamm.
“The Obama presidency would not have been possible without those very same protections,” he finished emphatically.
The Daily People’s Campaign was launched on June 27th to dramatize the impact of draconian public policies on ordinary people. POP vows to host this daily action everyday for 381 days in honor of the epic Montgomery Bus Boycott that propelled a young Martin Luther King Jr. onto national consciousness! A ‘national jobs program’ is at the top of the list of the core issues driving the Campaign.
The Montgomery Bus Boycott was launched on Dec 5, 1955 against the very humiliating racially segregated busing in Alabama in the aftermath of the dramatic arrest of civil rights pioneer and legend Rosa Parks. The Boycott, enduring police and Klan terror, lasted 381 days when it led to a federal court order ending that segregated busing.
Monday through Friday, the Daily People’s Campaign takes place from 4:30-6pm at the Lincoln Monument, Springfield Ave. and West Market St. On Saturdays, the Daily Campaign takes place on Broad and Market Streets, downtown Newark from 12 noon to 2pm. On Sundays, the Daily Campaign returns to the Lincoln Monument from 2-3pm…
Looking ahead, there will also be a major march and mobilization of all Campaign forces on April 4th, 2012, in observation of the anniversary of the assassination of Dr. King. This past year’s
April 4th march and mobilization year drew nearly 1000 participants, including a heavy union presence!
