Repeated exposures to emotionally activating media or video games can lead to habituation of certain natural emotional reactions. This process is called ‘desensitization.’ Negative emotions experienced automatically by viewers in response to a particular violent or gory scene decline in intensity after many exposures. For example, increased heart rates, perspiration, and self-reports of discomfort often accompany exposure to blood and gore. However, with repeated exposures, this negative emotional response habituates, and the child becomes ‘desensitized.’ The child can then think about and plan proactive aggressive acts without experiencing negative affect.” The Impact of Electronic Media Violence: Scientific Theory and Research by L. It’s as if we are going mad but when we stop to analyse what’s going on we see the culture we live in condones and encourages antisocial behavior. The ongoing escalation in violence in the US, in my opinion, coincides with the increase of violence promoted and shown in the mass media which is now ubiquitous and omnipresent.

The availability of violent programming in film, television, streaming services and video games are having a devastating impact on our psyches and behavior, especially in young children. “Children in the United States spend an average of between three and four hours per day viewing television and the best studies have shown that over 60% of programs contain some violence, and about 40% of those contain heavy violence. Children are also spending an increasingly large amount of time playing video games, most of which contain violence. Video game units are now present in 83% of homes with children. In 2004, children spent 49 minutes per day playing video, and on any given day, 52% of children ages 8–18 years play a video game games. Video game use peaks during middle childhood with an average of 65 minutes per day for 8–10 year-olds, and declines to 33 minutes per day for 15–18 year-olds. And most of these games are violent; 94% of games rated (by the video game industry) as appropriate for teens are described as containing violence, and ratings by independent researchers suggest that the real percentage may be even higher. No published study has quantified the violence in games rated ‘M’ for mature—presumably, these are even more likely to be violent.” The Impact of Electronic Media Violence: Scientific Theory and Research by L. Just watching violence on television or playing violent video games doesn’t make a person violent or induce them to act inappropriately. Well, that is the question. Do watching violent programming and playing violent video games impact our psyche and undermine human impulse control? There are studies that show this is indeed the case. “More recent studies have confirmed that high exposure to television violence for children and adolescents is also associated with higher levels of aggression and violent behavior. Exposure to violence shown through media is consistently associated with problem behaviors, such as increases in aggression and anxiety. Children could also end up with lower empathy and compassion for others.

Some children exposed to various forms of media violence – not just television violence but violence on the internet, in movies and in video games – can come to view the world as a mean, scary place where they are not safe and they can do little to protect themselves from harm. While media is not the sole cause, media consumption is a major factor. Our children watch around five hours of television per day and this doesn’t include other media. “Most television programming contains violence. Children who witness considerable media violence can become desensitized — or less shocked by violence, less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others, and less likely to show empathy for victims of violence. Violent media — and specifically violent video games — desensitize children. Many popular games are even similar to modern military training techniques that desensitize soldiers to killing. For example, only about 20 percent of soldiers in World War II actually were able to shoot the enemy. However, during the Vietnam War, 90 percent of soldiers could shoot and kill without hesitation. The change was attributed to new training procedures that included having soldiers practice shooting human-shaped figures rather than bulls-eyes (Grossman and Siddle, 1999). Lifelike video game violence desensitizes children in the same way, and leads to automaticity — or the learning of a behavior to the point that it becomes reflexive.” How violence in media effects children’s behavior by Terry Levy https://evergreenpsychotherapycenter.com/violence-media-affects-childrens-behavior/

Many parents lack empathy or they are chronically stressed out, frustrated and angry; and their children emulate them thus passing their dysfunction onto another generation. (Here’s a shameless plug I produce and host a podcast called Akoben the War Horn that can be heard on streaming platforms like: Soundcloud, Podbean, Spotify, Mixcloud and Anchor.)

I told her I usually don’t address issues like that. When I told my wife what my cousin asked, she asked me if I was going to write about it? I though about it and decided to add my two cents to the growing controversy, reactions and commentary. In my opinion Will Smith publicly slapping Chris Rock at an even such as the Oscars is symptomatic of a larger societal malaise, resorting to violence to “solve” issues and personal disagreements!

We see violence in the news daily, homicide is on the rise in most major urban areas, suicide and domestic violence, child and elder abuse are rampant to the point society seems to be unraveling. The corporate media is hyping the War in Ukraine to make it okay for defense contractors to rake in more money as the US government sends weapons to Ukraine!

The greatest purveyor of violence in the world today is American culture: television, motion pictures, video games, virtual reality, books and other media all exhort violence.. The history of this nation is full of violence. The United States has been a war 93% of its short existence! https://www.warhistoryonline.com/instant-articles/usa-only-17-years-of-peace.html?c Americans love war and violence, war and violence drives the US budget. At their core, budgets reflect values, priorities and what is important. The US has the highest military budget of any nation in the world. https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/military-spending-by-country War and war profiteering are vitally important to the US ruling class.

Violence is glorified in history books that either defend or ignore the indefensible: genocide, enslavement, oppressive child labor, economic privation and exploitation. So on a societal level an emotionally out of control wealthy pampered actor loosing it on national TV is totally consistent with the cultural norm. Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars are part and parcel of this maladaptive social dynamic within a larger dysfunctional social milieu.

The Oscar’s stating they don’t condone violence is the height of hypocrisy and mendacity. The motion picture industry and the media in general are filled with violent content; they make their money as purveyors of violence on a global scale!

Their dependence upon violence to sell movies and news has a concomitantly negative impact on society. “Media violence poses a threat to public health inasmuch as it leads to an increase in real-world violence and aggression. Research shows that fictional television and film violence contribute to both a short-term and a long-term increase in aggression and violence in young viewers. Television news violence also contributes to increased violence, principally in the form of imitative suicides and acts of aggression. Video games are clearly capable of producing an increase in aggression and violence in the short term, although no long-term longitudinal studies capable of demonstrating long-term effects have been conducted. The relationship between media violence and real-world violence and aggression is moderated by the nature of the media content and characteristics of and social influences on the individual exposed to that content. Still, the average overall size of the effect is large enough to place it in the category of known threats to public health.” Media violence research and youth violence data: why do they conflict? https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15298868/

What does Will Smith’s behavior at the Oscars say about him as a person? Smith claimed he was defending his wife. In his incongruent ramble during his acceptance speech, Smith attempted to justify his behavior (after he recognized the potential career ending consequences of his actions) by saying “Love makes you do crazy things”. He tried to tie his behavior to the Richard Williams character he played in the film for which he just won the Oscar!

That was despicable, there is no comparison to Will Smith’s outburst and the decades long struggle of Richard Williams as a Black working class father raising two daughters to be highly competitive an the affluent mostly white world of tennis! I’m sorry that was a specious attempt to justify his unwarranted actions which is another reflection on Smith’s character.

Even more dastardly by Smith trying to compare himself to Richard Williams, he reinforced the vile stereotype of Black men being violent out of control miscreants. This is a stereotype most Black men in America have to try to refute every day of our lives and Will Smith’s actions made it more difficult!

Hopefully some good can come out of this unfortunate event. Perhaps it will force us as Black people and a society to look at ourselves, do some introspection and foster genuine change. We can do better. Peace and harmony are possible but we have to work at them and make them real in our own lives. The more of us who do this the better off the world will be!

-30-

Chicago Christmas Violence Proposed Solutionhttps://www.theblacklist.net/forum/topics/chicago-christmas-violence-proposed-solution2016-12-27T22:37:56.000Z2016-12-27T22:37:56.000ZCharles E. The loss of any human life is sad and must not be ignored any longer. I offer a combination of ideas, if implemented, will create a model for addressing and solving gun violence in Urban Cities. Leaders solve problems without fear or excuses. Politicians do the opposite. To implement this proposed solution will require leaders.

Proposed Solutions:
The City of Chicago should outlaw all criminal gangs. Creating a mandatory 20-year sentence, if anyone is convicted of a crime, while affiliated, associated or a member of a criminal gang.

Allow community members to vote for a Non-Lethal Bullet Initiative that outlaws the use of Lethal Bullets, while allowing the ownership of guns. It should include an exception for licensed hunters with hunting rifles.

Create (8) Eight New Civic Associations for (Ex-Gang Members) with new colors, symbols, literature, mission of community service, and goals that promote family, harmony, peace, knowledge, community and respect for law.

Hire or Release from Prison Reformed Original Gangsters (OGs) to lead and run the new civic associations with a mission to provide Rights Of Passage for Manhood and Womanhood training, and mentoring for ex-gang members.

Use Ex-Ray Technology to detect weapons on individuals using public transportation, walking on the streets, or inside their vehicles. Offer a weapons Buy-Back Program.

Use Electronic Wrist Bans (e-Ban) Technology for convicted felons to monitor their association and track geolocation, which would aid law enforcement in solving gun violence related crimes.

Release to the public the names of individual gang members who are likely to be murdered or imprisoned due to their criminal history, so that their family, friends and other professionals can encourage them to join one of the new civic associations and live a productive and healthy life.

Create four training facilities in Chicago to train new members with Social Skills, Life Skills, Problem Solving Skills and Employment Skills for manufacturing, construction, technology, entertainment and entrepreneurial professions.

Use Private/Public Funding from Professional Sports Teams and Players to raise the initial seek capital by offering tax incentives. Allow residents to add $0.02 sales tax, $1.00 Property Tax, $0.10 Public Transportation Tax and a $1 Professional Sports Ticket Fee. Twenty Percent (20%) of the funds will be allocated for Administration and Eight Percent (80%) of the funds would be distributed equally between the 8 New Civic Associations and all funds will be made public in real-time over each Civic’s Association’s Website. The State, County and City Auditors would provide oversight, auditing and accountability of all fund expenditures.

Where there is a WILL to solve this problem, there will always be a WAY, but where there is NO WILL, there will always be EXCUSES and FEAR! We must have enough compassion, love and empathy for the suffering of others humans to demand leaders end the Cycle of Violence in Chicago. I welcome the opportunity to meet with those ready to lead without Fear or Excuses.

The Right To Live Lawhttps://www.theblacklist.net/forum/topics/the-right-to-live-law2013-03-13T20:34:06.000Z2013-03-13T20:34:06.000ZCharles E. Far too much of the criminal activity is not connected to ANY established street gangs. You resolve a desperate economic problem with a desperate economic solution.

Anyone who is a veteran organizer/activist working in the area of crime intervention and prevention know that the overwhelming majority of our people are in the criminal element for doing something desperate to address their desperate economic conditions. Then the Black community is overwhelmed with the "walking time bombs" left in our community from the closed mental health centers and police presence alone cannot resolve this and what we are really preparing ourselves for is a major confrontation that just results is even more arrests, violence, and death.

At a recent State public hearing on desperate urban unemployment conditions there were hundreds of ex-offenders who angrily testified about their frustration in that almost all of their efforts to find legitimate sources of income were falling on deaf ears and the lack of legitimate job opportunities were all but forcing them right back into the original criminal elements that landed them in jail in the first place. Many of those ex-offenders also testified at how many had started or became a member of non profit community economic empowerment groups to create legitimate community business and job opportunities only for their efforts to get funding met with rejection after rejection, and now they too are left to fend for themselves in trying to make living for themselves.

NO AMOUNT of police deployment without a matching economic solution is going to erase the ongoing desperate acts of these members as well as thousands and thousands of non members all over the streets of Chicago absolutely forced into the gang, drug, and other illegal street economies in the severe absence of not enough legal economic outlets not just facing these constituencies, but far too many "good people" who also get caught up in joining those same illegal street economies when all their efforts at finding a legal income fails.

Those of us who are veterans of the streets know that the announced efforts of Mayor Emanuel and Chicago Police Superintendent Gary McCarthy are announcing today will be symbolic at best and offer no real solution to the root causes that the desperate economic conditions at the root of violence will continue to plague the south and westsides. Again, The south and westside needs an economic revival that will sustain and increase community businesses and jobs, something that that time will show that this new police deployment alone will not resolve.

Its almost criminal that Mayor Emanuel and Police Chief McCarthy to take our community on these continued public relations campaigns that these new police deployment are actually going to successfully resolve the criminal element and random acts of violence that plague the south and westsides.

Mark S.
Just before noon on Friday, (2/17) a 17-year-old girl was attacked by 8 girls, according to Philadelphia Police.

The attack happened on the street at 59th and Lansdowne, near Overbrook High School, police said.

NBC10 spoke with Brooke Bethea, victim of this attack. "I was walking and that's when they started grabbing me, punching and stomping me," said Bethea. The high school junior was also zapped with a stun gun, three times.

Bethea says she collapsed during the attack and had a seizure. The 11th grader, who weighs less than 100 pounds, has a pre-existing medical condition that includes a sickle cell trait and a history of seizures.

"They could've killed her with her being so small and everything. It's just hard," said Penny Talley, mother.

A group of at least 80 students gathered around the scene of the attack.

Rhonda Richardson, a witness who was working at a hair salon nearby, tells NBC10 she went through the crowd and helped the teenage girl inside to safety.

Richardson says the girl's face was bloody and she was "delirious." The good samaritan says this type of scene is a regular occurrence near the high school.

NOTE ANNIV OF MEMBER’S MURDER!

On Wednesday, November 16th, the New Black Panther Party’s Newark chapter will rally with the Newark AntiViolence Coalition against street violence on Tracy and Avon Avenues in Newark at 5pm on what will be their 121nd consecutive week of antiviolence protests.

This Wednesday will have a dark, bleeding cloud of memory hovering over the rally because it will also mark the 1 year anniversary of the brutal slaying of NAVC member Selenna Baines in Irvington. Baines and a companion, Lashawn Laquan Woods, were both shot to death on Myrtle and Madison Avenues. Baines, a single mother was pregnant when she was senselessly slain.

The following Wednesday, the NAVC sought to rally that community in honor of their fallen sister. They were greeted savagely with a senseless attack by the Irvington Police department, arresting six NAVC members including Sharif Amenhotep of the New Black Panther Party.

“Several things need to be said here,” complained an angry Zayid Muhammad, who marched the remaining participants to the Irvington Police Department to secure the release of their members.

“One, we went out of our way to seek the cooperation of the City of Irvington for this rally. We even filed for a permit and met with both the mayor and the police chief. Two, the police chief who lives in walking distance from where Selenna was killed personally oversaw the police attack on the rally. Three, he has done nothing to make that block safe or to address what happened to Selenna that raw rainy night, nor has Irvington’s spineless elected leadership either, and four, and finally, instead of dropping the charges and streamlining the permit application process and properly getting out in front of issues like these with the community, Irvington now wants to charge people wishing to rally in the town the cost of supplying at least four police officers with a proper permit,” he finished angrily, referring to a recent application of the Peoples Organization for Progress for a permit to march against foreclosures.

In 2007, Muhammad, himself, had been shot just several doors from where Baines was killed.

The six NAVC members went to court for the charges they faced from the police attack and the arrest nearly a dozen times only for the matter to be recently transferred out of Irvington. Those charges are still pending.
