Civic Groups Call On City, County, State Election Agencies For Voter Registration Weekend In Honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr January 13-15

The Illinois Voter Restoration Project, led by veteran activist Mark S. Allen, The Chicago Far-South Suburban NAACP led by David Lowery, President, The Movement, led by Minister Jim Allen, United In Peace and Youth H.A.M. ("Having A Moment") movement led by Wallace "Gator" Bradley, The Community Reinvestment Organizing Project led by Otis Monroe, CEO of The Monroe Foundation, Black Wall Street Chicago, Executive Director Angela Williams, and other grassroots members are calling on all city, county and state board of election authorities, churches, civic and other voter empowerment groups to support a city, county and state "Rev. Dr. King Martin Luther King, Jr Birthday Voter Registration Weekend" during the dates of Friday January 13 thru Sunday January 15th, Dr. King's actual birthday. "Quite frankly, this is something that should be declared not just locally, but nationally to honor Dr. King's birthday with an effort of substance of registering new voters for voter empowerment, and I don't expect to get a no from anybody for this noble cause," said Mark Allen.

There are enough active Deputy Registrars and others eligible to register voters so that on Friday, January 13, we can conduct voter registration of all seniors in all high schools across this city and state; on Saturday January 14th, local grocery stores and shopping centers across the state can allow voter registration in their various store and high traffic outlets; and of course on Dr. King's actual birthday on Sunday, January 15th churches across the city, county and state should open their doors for voter registration. Then on that Monday, January 16th, Dr. King's national birthday commemoration date, we should be rejoicing in the celebration of thousands of new registered voters in the name of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "There was nothing more basic to Dr. King's work and legacy than voter empowerment and so what better way for us all to honor Dr. King on his birthday and memorial commemoration than continuing his legacy of voter empowerment," said Mark Allen.

"The work begins today with the announcement and initial support of our respective election agencies starting with The Chicago Board of Elections and their "Voter Engagement 2012" and then we keep organizing from there for a real weekend of substance to honor the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr," said Allen"
