West Africa, with its population of over 400 million people and roughly 300 million youngsters under 18, undoubtedly has one of the most rapidly growing number of internet and active social media users in the world. This growth is a huge opportunity for startups (especially in the tech industry) all across the world in general and the continent in particular, making it seemingly easy to take over a market due to the low number of local competition in any field. Despite all these positive stats about potential markets in this part of the world, Startups and companies face an issue that doesn't seem to be going away -- the absence of a reliable banking system, the lack of reliable online payment solutions and the low adoption of fintech solutions in most of the countries, due to a basic cultural problem: Youngsters do not seem to trust digital money. How to solve this issue? Well, the newly founded, ready to launch Malian startup, YeraTube, found the solution!

YeraTube is a reward-based social media platform that allows users to gain points by watching videos that can then be redeemed for internet data packages, call units and cashed out using available mobile money solutions all across Africa. The platform offers its users a risk-free wallet that introduces them to P2P transfers (sending points to other users or tipping their favorite content creator), Item purchases (buying paid videos on the platform), Cashing-in/Cashing out points (thus converting them into real money) without making them feel like they are putting their own money on the line.

Furthermore, the startup provides 3rd party companies with a unique digital advertisement proposition for businesses and an online payment solution linked to the YeraTube wallet, allowing tech startups in West Africa to finally access a customer base of hundreds of millions of young people ready to buy items on their websites reliably and comfortably! Such a value proposition will greatly impact the whole tech ecosystem by giving startups the option to fully digitize their websites and efficiently advertise to their target audience.

Since the launch of its MVP in January 2021, the app was downloaded by more than 100,000 users in Mali and has recorded more than 25,000 daily active users and a session time of approximately 25 minutes per user per day with little to no communication involved. The number of users is exponentially increasing, and the team of co-founders -- composed of the 26-year-old Electrical and Electronics Engineer Mohamed Lamine Malet and the 22-year-old Business development and marketing strategist Ouma Idrissa Baby -- vowed to expand the reach of the startup to the whole of West Africa by the end of 2022 and make YeraTube one of the most used app in the region; unsurprisingly so, as it has been ranked #1 Malian app in the entertainment category in the Malian App Store and #4 compared to all entertainment apps in the Malian App Store throughout November and December!

With ongoing discussions with investors eager to be part of the journey and not miss this great opportunity, the founders claim to officially launch the product on January 1st, 2022 and close the first funding round by July 2022, making YeraTube the first Malian seed-stage tech startup.

With a vibrant and dynamic team, an innovative and unique idea and such a huge potential market, YeraTube is surely about to be the pioneer of a new area for the tech industry in Africa at large. We can't wait to see how this beautiful story unfolds in the near future!

It has become necessary to represent Africa beyond the stereotype of hunger and poverty. At Ventures Africa, this is one of our most important assignments.

It’s no longer debatable that Africa’s tech industry is promising. Investors are more bullish than ever on the sector, as VC fundings reached a record-high this year. The continent is still five years away from having a 4G connection. Like many other challenges, this is an infrastructural problem. Most of the continent’s internet is by low-speed dial-up connections, concentrated in Egypt, Kenya, and South Africa. According to the Speedtest Global Index, the average mobile download speed globally was 30.89 Mbps in April 2020, while the same for fixed broadband was 74.74 Mbps. In Africa, the highest mobile download speed was in Morocco, at 30.88 Mbps. The highest for fixed broadband was in South Africa at 33.14 Mbps. That’s not all. The report also shows that Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest internet prices in the world. In part, this is an infrastructure problem. But it is also due to a lack of competition in the data space.

African governments are not doing enough to speed up internet penetration, and tech giants are now taking up the job. Instead of speeding up growth, African governments are slowing it down. Several African countries are still under dictatorships, including Sudan, Zimbabwe, and Chad. As a result, internet shutdowns are still common. This year, the Nigerian government restricted access to Twitter for its citizens. Today, Nigerian residents can only access the microblogging site through Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).

Africa’s education sector still has a mountain to climb.
The Republic of Liberia has announced events lined up for the commemoration of the two-hundedth anniversary of the freedom of African descendants and Pan-African Leadership.

Mr Ledgerhood Rennie, Liberia’s Minister of Information, Cultural Affairs & Tourism disclosed this in statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.

According to Rennie, the announcement of the bicentennial event was made at an event to launch the theme, slogan of the anniversary, and the finalisation of the logo in Monrovia.

Rennie who is also Chairman of the bicentennial steering committee said that the event would be celebrated throughout 2022, from Jan. 7 to Dec. 10 with the official opening ceremony to be held on Feb. 14, 2022.

According to him, the theme and slogan are designed to support the objectives of the celebration, which are to commemorate Liberia’s rich cultural heritage, the abundant tourism and investment opportunities, and to reunite and reconnect African Americans in the U.S and other blacks in the diaspora with their cultural identity in Liberia.

Rennie said that a key objective of the bicentennial celebration “is to strengthen the rich historic relationship between the United States and Liberia dating back to the 1800s” when Liberia was established.

Following his retirement from an NBA career that spanned 15 years, Deng will help grow the BAL’s profile throughout Africa and around the world, while inspiring African youth through basketball.

“I am thrilled to work with Luol in his new role as BAL Global Ambassador,” said BAL President, Amadou Gallo Fall. “He has been a great leader and an inspiring role model. His remarkable basketball journey includes an extraordinary 15-year NBA career, two All-Star selections and participation in the 2012 Olympic Games. Luol has been an integral part of our youth development efforts and has taken part in many of our initiatives across the continent since 2011. We look forward to working with him to establish the BAL as a world-class professional basketball league.”

“I am honored to represent the BAL as the league’s Global Ambassador,” said Deng. “We have a tremendous amount of talent in Africa and I am excited that some of that talent will be showcased through our new league. I look forward to following some of the top African club teams when the inaugural season gets underway next month and supporting the BAL in expanding its footprint around the world.”

Born in Wau, South Sudan, Deng was selected with the 7th overall pick by the Phoenix Suns in the 2004 NBA Draft and was subsequently traded to the Chicago Bulls where he played from 2004-2014. He also played for the Cleveland Cavaliers (2014), Miami Heat (2014-16), Los Angeles Lakers (2016-18) and Minnesota Timberwolves (2018-19), before signing a one-day contract with the Chicago Bulls to retire as a Bull ahead of the 2019-20 NBA Season.

Deng is a two-time NBA All-Star (2012, 2013). He was a recipient of the 2007 NBA Sportsmanship Award and was named to the 2005 NBA All-Rookie First Team.

Deng was a member of the Great Britain National Team in the 2012 Olympic Games in London and captained Team Africa in the NBA Africa Games in 2015 and 2017. He regularly participates in youth development initiatives in Africa, including Basketball Without Borders (BWB) Africa. He was elected South Sudan Basketball Federation President in November 2019.

Africa Oil & Power is the only event group uniting the entire energy value chain, from oil exploration to renewables and focusing on the African continent; AOP 2020 flagship conference takes place on September 15-17 in Cape Town under the theme #InvestWithoutBoundaries; Key national conferences in 2020, held in partnership with government, include Senegal, Angola, Equatorial Guinea and South Sudan.

Africa is open for business in the energy sector in 2020. As the expanding natural gas and power sectors drive growth across the continent, Africa Oil & Power presents a series of events that target global and African investors and profile the leading projects and investment destinations in 2020.

With the 2019 ratification of the African Continental Free Trade Area – which aims to make doing business on the continent easier and encourages African countries to trade with each other – intra-African trade could increase by as much as 52 percent by 2022. It is against this backdrop that Africa Oil & Power presents the 2020 theme for the pan-African AOP 2020 conference: #InvestWithoutBoundaries.

In addition to the flagship AOP 2020 conference in Cape Town, this year’s line-up of events includes Equatorial Guinea’s Year of Investment campaign, the second Angola Oil & Gas, the first-ever Senegal Oil & Power, and South Sudan’s fourth national energy conference.

“AOP’s 2020 series of events drive trade and investment in energy on the African continent. It’s a privilege to continue working with national partners in Equatorial Guinea, Angola, South Africa and South Sudan, and to forge a powerful partnership with Senegal for our first national conference in Dakar this year. AOP is the venue for African and international investors to connect with African energy projects and deals, whether in gas infrastructure or renewable energy technology, or any other part of the value chain,” said James Chester, Acting CEO of AOP.

Senegal Oil & Power 2020 Senegal has launched its first offshore licensing round, comprising 12 blocks in the MSGBC Basin, and reached a final investment decision on its first LNG project, Grand Tortue Ahmeyim. The inaugural Senegal Oil & Power 2020 event, taking place on May 27-28 in Dakar, will provide a platform to highlight these achievements and more in Senegal’s energy sector.

Equatorial Guinea Year of Investment Equatorial Guinea has put its new campaign, ‘Equatorial Guinea 2020 Year of Investment,’ in motion. The year-long energy investment initiative is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Mines and Hydrocarbons and organized with the African Energy Chamber. Equatorial Guinea’s Gas Megahub project, together with eight investment-ready projects, are setting the course for strategic energy development on the continent in the coming decade. Kicking off the Year of Investment is the Africa Oil & Investment Forum, taking place on June 1, hosted in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

Angola Oil & Gas 2020 The Angola Oil & Gas Conference & Exhibition 2020 follows a highly successful inaugural event in June 2019 that brought more than 1,700 delegates and nearly 50 exhibitors together. Angola Oil & Gas 2020, hosted in Luanda from June 16-17, will be the focal point of an international investment drive aiming to bring new deals to the table as the government eyes the restructuring of Sonangol and downstream expansion, and holds a 2020 licensing round.

Africa Oil & Power 2020 AOP’s flagship event, Africa Oil & Power 2020, taking place in Cape Town from September 15-17, will, for the first time, host the Africa Renewables Forum, Africa LNG Forum and the Energy Finance Forum. This is the only conference to fully integrate the sectors of oil and gas with power and unites explorers, producers, financiers, service providers, power companies and governments from every corner of the continent.

South Sudan Oil & Power 2020 The fourth edition of South Sudan Oil & Power 2020 takes place in Juba on October 29-30 and will highlight the country’s commitment to building a stronger economy around a thriving energy sector with hydrocarbons and power as key drivers. This year’s theme is #InCountryValue and puts the development of local companies’ and individuals’ capacity at center stage.

The 62-year-old Nigerian businessman and Africa’s most prominent industrialist ended the decade with a net worth of almost $15 billion, making him the 96th wealthiest man in the world, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Born into a wealthy Muslim family of traders in the north, Dangote incorporated his own business selling cement at 21. He shifted to manufacturing the building material in the 1990s, helped by government policies that encouraged ways to reduce the need for imports. His critics still accuse him of taking advantage of his closeness to the government to gain an unfair market advantage, a claim he has repeatedly dismissed.

His conglomerate, Dangote Industries, includes the biggest cement company on the continent, the Lagos-listed Dangote Cement Plc. That’s one of four publicly traded companies under the Dangote umbrella that account for more than a fifth of the value of the Nigerian stock exchange.

The year 2020 could be a significant one for the billionaire, who is close to completing one of the world’s largest oil refineries in Nigeria. The plant has the capacity to meet more than Nigeria’s entire fuel consumption and could transform an economy that currently imports all its refined product needs. Dangote is also constructing a fertilizer factory on the same site.

We have mentioned it before, but today it became a reality. AFRO partnered with two companies to guarantee population of the continent a simple and secure access to drinking water. O’Claire and Sunwaterlife rely on systems that transform non-potable water into potable water using ultra filtration. This is a crucial point due to the fact that sometimes it is needed to travel several kilometers and walk for hours in order to find a water source without being sure that this water is not contaminated.

AFRO is therefore the pan-African digital currency used by these systems to allow optimal security. The prices will be adapted to the population of the emerging areas.

We are pleased that this partnership is coming to life as these solutions will also allow to promote and give a boost to the development of the local industry thanks to the maintenance, analysis, control and management requirements performed by locals.

Shared Value Africa Initiative announces the 4th Africa Shared Value Leadership Summit (4–5 June 2020 in Kigali, Rwanda)https://www.theblacklist.net/communities/news-from-africa/forum/shared-value-africa-initiative-announces-the-4th-africa-shared-va2019-10-28T13:50:27.000Z2019-10-28T13:50:27.000ZSendMeYourNewshttps://www.theblacklist.net/members/SendMeYourNews

A network of some of Africa’s largest companies will gather in Kigali, Rwanda on 4-5 June 2020 at the 4th annual Africa Shared Value Leadership Summit (www.AfricaSharedValueSummit.com), to share ideas about how companies can build business initiatives around solving social problems at scale and contributing to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on the continent.

The event, the Africa Shared Value Leadership Summit, aims to increase awareness of how social and environmental protection can be incorporated into the strategies of businesses across industries and borders. The Shared Value Business Model, developed by Harvard Business School’s Prof Michael Porter and Mark Kramer and practised by an increasing number of businesses across the world, advocates that business has a responsibility to create both economic and social value.

The summit will provide delegates with an opportunity to learn from the Rwanda success story and why President Paul Kagame is widely regarded as having presided over an economic and social rebirth in the country.

In economic terms, Rwanda’s rate of economic growth has averaged 8% since 2001, according to the World Bank. It is one of four African countries included in the top ten fastest-growing global economies in the world in 2019, with medium term growth projected at 7-8%. In social terms, poverty rates have fallen, and Rwanda has made dramatic gains in health and development indicators.

“Rwanda has demonstrated how enormous challenges can be overcome if there is a willingness between public and private sector to work together, to create a thriving economy,” says Shared Value Africa Initiative CEO Tiekie Barnard. “The summit will offer participants insights into successful Rwanda and regional organisations that understand the responsibility of business in creating social change. It provides a learning environment, with participants sharing information on how they have achieved social impact through their business.”

The summit’s content is aligned with selected priority areas of Rwanda’s National Strategy for Transformation (NST1). Focus areas include the financial, agricultural, mining and health sectors. Innovation will be a cross-cutting topic. Discussion will also focus on opportunities for collaboration through regional relationships, such as those created by the African Continental Free Trade Area incorporating the current 27 African Union member states.

Over the two days of the summit, business leaders will discuss how businesses focused on “profit with purpose” can contribute to reducing inequality and building economic prosperity, thereby mitigating the risk and enhancing the profit potential of doing business on the continent.

This will be the fourth annual Africa Shared Value Leadership Summit – in May 2019, 350 business leaders from 18 countries met in Nairobi, Kenya. Speaker sharing their success and challenges included leaders such as the late Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore, Ladol CEO Dr Amy Jadesimi, Enel Head of Sustainability Projects Maria Cristina Papetti, KCB CEO Joshua Oigara, Barclays CEO Jeremy Awori, Old Mutual Head of Responsible Business, Khanyi Chaba and co-founder of the global Shared Value Initiative, Mark Kramer.

“At the heart of the Shared Value approach is the understanding that business can only be as successful as the environment in which it operates,” says Barnard. “This is not simply a way for companies to improve their reputations.”

Increasingly, companies and their shareholders are seeing that over the long term, a society’s inequality will also create problems for businesses. “Shared Value creates more responsible, and sustainable businesses by allowing companies to focus on solving persistent problems for unserved or underserved customers,” says Stephen Chege, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer of Kenya-based Safaricom and pioneer of M-PESA, one of the world’s most successful mobile phone-based money transfer, financing and microfinancing service.

As with previous years, the UN Sustainable Development Goals will be a theme throughout at the Summit as a guide to the business leaders to demonstrate how business can contribute to achieving the goals and to addressing e social challenges, a core part of their operations.

The 17th edition of BWB Africa will be held at The NBA Academy Africa in Saly (https://on.nba.com/2LIlq4d) and at the Dakar Arena in Dakar.

BWB Africa 2019 will bring together the top male and female players ages 17 and under from throughout Africa to learn directly from current and former NBA and FIBA players, coaches and legends and to compete against the best young players from the continent. BWB Africa will also include NBA Cares and Jr. NBA outreach efforts in partnership with local community organizations.

“Bringing the 17th edition of the Basketball Without Borders Africa camp to Senegal speaks to our commitment to expanding our footprint across the continent,” said NBA Africa Managing Director and Basketball Africa League President, Amadou Gallo Fall. “With grassroots basketball development remaining at the core of our strategy to grow the game across Africa, BWB remains our flagship development and community outreach initiative where Africa’s most talented youth have an opportunity to develop as players and learn important life skills they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.”

“FIBA and the NBA have teamed up for several years to organize activities to boost the development of youth basketball in Africa. Those initiatives are very important for the continent,” said FIBA Africa Executive Director, Alphonse Bilé. “I hope that some of the participants in this BWB camp will one day play in the new jointly created Basketball Africa League and benefit from this fantastic opportunity to showcase their talents in this continental league.”

“We are excited to host this year’s Basketball Without Borders Africa camp and welcome FIBA and the NBA back to Senegal,” said Senegal Basketball Federation President, Babacar Ndiaye. “We look forward to the great week of basketball and to showcasing our city and the state-of-the-art Dakar Arena.”

BWB Africa has previously been held in South Africa (2003-2009; 2011-2015; 2017-2018), Senegal (2010) and Angola (2016). More than 1,100 players from more than 30 African countries have participated in the NBA and FIBA’s global basketball development and community outreach program, with 10 former BWB Africa campers drafted into the NBA, including 2019 NBA Champion Pascal Siakam (Toronto Raptors; Cameroon; BWB Africa 2012), two-time NBA All-Star Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers; Cameroon; BWB Africa 2011), Luc Mbah a Moute (formerly of the LA Clippers; Cameroon, BWB Africa 2003) and Gorgui Dieng (Minnesota Timberwolves; Senegal; BWB Africa 2009).

NIKE, a global partner of BWB since 2002, will outfit the campers and coaches with NIKE apparel and footwear.

The NBA and FIBA have staged 59 BWB camps in 38 cities in 30 countries on six continents. BWB has hosted more than 3,500 participants from 129 countries and territories. More than 290 current and former NBA and WNBA players have joined more than 240 NBA team personnel from all 30 NBA teams, with 68 former BWB campers drafted into the NBA or signed as free agents.

In February, the NBA and FIBA announced their plan to launch the Basketball Africa League(https://on.nba.com/2Lblfz8), a new professional league featuring 12 club teams from across Africa scheduled to begin play next year.

The NBA has a long history in Africa and opened its African headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2010. Opening-night rosters for the 2018-19 season featured 13 African-born players, and there are more than 80 current and former NBA players from Africa or with direct family ties to the continent, including Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famers Hakeem Olajuwon (Nigeria) and Dikembe Mutombo (Democratic Republic of the Congo).

In January 2019, Adzuna South Africa conducted research on which languages pay the most lucrative salaries. When the same analysis was done in 2018, Chinese, Japanese, Xhosa and Zulu all topped the rankings. However, in 2019, the top four paying languages are Zulu, Spanish, Russian and French while Chinese and Japanese dropped down the list a considerable amount of slots.

According to the job aggregator website, it isn’t only essential to showcase bilingual language skills during the interview process on home soil; it is also beneficial for thousands of hopeful jobseekers that dream of living and working abroad. In some countries, a certain level of competence of the local language is expected for all new expatriates arriving.

Jesse Green, spokesperson for Adzuna, commented on the matter. “We have noticed that most foreign-language jobs in South Africa are for roles in call-centre and sales. However, when compared to the stats from 2018, it is interesting to note the drop in demand for local South African languages like Xhosa and Afrikaans, which corresponds with the lower advertised salaries.”

Green continues: “Highlighting foreign language skills and bilingual capabilities is more important now than it has ever been. SA’s current economic climate is forcing many locals to secure jobs abroad, and with a special set of language skills, it can be much easier to obtain work visas overseas.”

A high demand for French, Portuguese and German was noted; with the top South African language required being Zulu. English was deemed ubiquitous for research purposes, which is why it was not included in the analysis. The language which was lowest in demand for the first month of 2019 was Russian.

Zulu, Spanish and Russian are the three best-paying languages for 2019. In South Africa, the most in-demand foreign language is French, with 717 vacancies listed in January 2019. The demand for skilled, Afrikaans-speaking employees has dropped quite significantly, with 2,412 vacancies currently being advertised, opposed to the total of 3,300 vacancies advertised in August 2018.

With more and more business process outsourcing companies entering South Africa and an ever-growing international presence, we cannot deny that the demand for foreign language skills is set to soar even higher in the future.

Language Job demand Average salary
Zulu 141 R494,597
Spanish 93 R480,090
Russian 16 R414,571
French 717 R393,094
Portuguese 110 R369,156
German 275 R347,500
Chinese/Mandarin 101 R324,230
Afrikaans 2,412 R199,999
Xhosa 104 R191,706
Japanese 18 R78,000

Suale-Divela, who was part of an investigative reporting team that exposed corruption in African soccer, was shot to death in the evening of Jan. 16 in Accra, the capital, as he was driving home.

"We urge government leaders in Ghana to probe the killing of Suale-Divela and swiftly bring the accused to justice," said National Press Club President Alison Fitzgerald Kodjak.

Suale-Divela, who had said last fall he feared for his life after a politician made threatening comments and urged others to attack him, worked for Tiger Eye Investigations, a company that has an investigative news service.

Tiger Eye's reporting helped lead to a lifetime ban for Kwesi Nyantaki, FIFA Council member and former head of the Ghana Football Association. Nyantaki was filmed accepting a bribe of $65,000, according to the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project. After the BBC last year aired a documentary about the scandal, Ghanaian Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong encouraged people to attack Suale-Divela and others on the reporting team.

"Threatening journalists and others who expose wrongdoing is an egregious violation of the norms of civil society and democratic nations," said Barbara Cochran, president of the National Press Club's Journalism Institute.

Suale-Divela was the first journalist in the world to be killed in 2019, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The National Press Club, whose Press Freedom Committee monitors events affecting journalism around the world, and the National Press Club Journalism Institute will be closely watching the outcome of the investigation in Ghana, Kodjak and Cochran said.

Founded in 1908, the National Press Club is the world's leading professional organization for journalists. It has more than 3,100 members worldwide. The Club supports press freedom through its nonprofit National Press Club Journalism Institute.

US-China rivalry in Africa set to sharpen in 2019https://www.theblacklist.net/communities/news-from-africa/forum/us-china-rivalry-in-africa-set-to-sharpen-in-20192018-12-11T12:46:11.000Z2018-12-11T12:46:11.000ZTheBlackList-Publisherhttps://www.theblacklist.net/members/TheBlackListPublisher

Early signs suggest that the US-China rivalry will find its way to the African continent in 2019. While the US is multiplying warnings about the perils of Chinese debt-fuelled spending for economic stability, China will continue to broaden its engagement across the continent, with particular focus on East Africa. This is one of the key findings of RiskMap 2019 (https://bit.ly/2GjBJUe), a publication forecasting political and security risk for business leaders and policy makers across the world, by specialist global risk consultancy Control Risks (www.ControlRisks.com).

George Nicholls, Senior Partner for Southern Africa based in Johannesburg, elaborates: “So far, the US-China rivalry that dominated global headlines in 2018 has played out less visibly in Africa than on other continents. Support for China or the US has not emerged as a defining issue in African politics, with most countries keen to pursue closer ties and seek financing from both sides rather than falling neatly on one camp. In 2019 we might see this changing.

“While still the largest investor on the continent, the US has seen its engagement on the continent become more narrowly focused on security matters under the current administration – in contrast to China which has made formidable inroads in sub-Saharan Africa over the last decade.

“2019 will show revived US interest in development finance and lending for infrastructure projects on the continent and a more concerted US commercial strategy towards Africa is likely to take shape. The increased rivalry will therefore open up additional investment opportunities but will also present African countries with increasingly starker foreign policy and commercial choices.”

Control Risks’ top-five global risks for 2019

US-China trade rift foretells a new global order

The US-China trade confrontation will define global geopolitics in 2019. Friction between these two nations will complicate business not only for those European businesses operating in both countries but also for those with connections several times removed.

The global data rollercoaster

The stand-off between the three major data regulation ideologies will present a new level of risk for international business in 2019. For China, data is something to be controlled; for the EU, it is something to be protected; for the US, it is something to be commercialised. Businesses must be prepared for the challenge of collecting, storing and transferring data within and between these three domains against a backdrop of inconsistent enforcement and escalating cyber security threats.

US political gridlock

The vice of legislative gridlock will close on policy making in Washington and throw the US into a period of political uncertainty. Resurgent Democrats in the House of Representatives will seek to scrutinise the president under an investigative lens. Pushback from a Republican Senate and White House will erase any hopes of consistency for business operations. Trade policy will remain unpredictable; the pace of deregulation will slow.

Extreme weather disruption

Some of worst business disruption in 2019 will stem from extreme weather and its consequences. From storms to floods to droughts and forest fires, the costs of interrupted production, distribution, sales and travel will skyrocket in 2019. Last year’s record for weather-related insurance claims will likely be surpassed.

Multinationals becoming nationless

As globalised companies enter 2019, they risk becoming nationless nomads, as nationalist politics continue to advance across the world. Formal and informal barriers are rising. Frictionless trade is beginning to rub, supply chains are starting to drag. Business leaders must recalibrate and adapt to this new reality, or global players will end up being played by a world in uncertain transition.

Last year, a new film festival was launched on the continent. The China-Africa International Film Festival (CAIFF) hosted by China mainly targets the Chinese and African film markets. From Oct. 7 to 10, the second CAIFF was held in the South African city of Cape Town.

Featuring an opening ceremony, film exhibitions, forums and a closing ceremony among other activities, the event presented a number of excellent Chinese and African films to the local audience.

In recent years, many Chinese film and TV productions have entered the oversea market, particularly in Africa. For example, the TV series "Ordinary World," "Go Lala Go" and "Journey to the West," as well as the films "Love is Not Blind" and "Miss Granny" have enjoyed great popularity among African audiences.

In 2011, "A Beautiful Daughter-in-law Era," the first Chinese TV series exported to Africa, turned out to be a big hit. The drama was dubbed in Swahili by three Kenyan actors and a few staff members from Chinese radio stations who can speak the language.

Following on from the sound start, a Chinese digital television firm operating in Africa established a multi-language dubbing center and held a dubbing contest among local people. The top ten winners of the contest received visas for China in 2016 and arrived in Beijing to work on dubbing for films and TV series.

Up to now, hundreds of Chinese film and TV productions have been broadcast in more than 40 African countries. The film and TV exchanges between China and African countries is booming. One of the reasons is the improved production in China, while the other is that modesty, valuing family harmony and other codes of ethics embodied in Chinese films and TV plays hold cultural appeal in some areas of Africa, which also have a large population and a strong attachment among big families.

By hosting the CAIFF, China hopes to expand win-win cooperation in the African film market, and also cement people-to-people ties and traditional friendship with African countries.

South Africa’s Statistician-General and head of Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), Risenga Maluleke, has urged commercial farmers to participate in an agricultural census starting next week.

Stats SA is set to embark on a countrywide Census of Commercial Agriculture, commencing Monday 15 October 2018.

About 600 field staff will visit commercial farms across the country to establish the number of commercial farmers, farm size, crop type being farmed in different geographic areas, and agricultural inputs such as irrigation usage.

This year marks the centenary of agricultural censuses for the country. South Africa conducted its first Census of Commercial Agriculture in 1918.

The United Nations body, Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) recommends that country’s conduct a census of commercial agriculture every ten years. South Africa last conducted an agricultural census in 2007.

The agricultural census will cover commercial farmers, which are farms producing for income or profit, says Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke.

Mr Maluleke said CoCA 2017 was important for helping investors make evidence-based decisions.

He stated that the agricultural census also helped government with providing data for assessing the severity of food insecurity.

“The general objective of the census of commercial agriculture is to collect basic quantitative information on South Africa’s agricultural sector and provide a snap shot of the sector. This information is essential for planning, policy formulation, and measuring food security,” said the Statistician-General.

“I would like to urge farmers to cooperate with our fieldworkers and participate in the agricultural census. This data is the only source of comprehensive and impartial data about agriculture. As required by the Statistics Act, we may not disclose any personal information,” said the Statistician-General.

Stats SA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries; but will collect the information independently as the national statistics office of the country.

The agricultural census field staff will count the number of holdings, crop types grown in different geographic regions, and number of livestock each farm has.

Stats SA will conduct the agricultural census from 15 October 2018 until June 2019.

The survey will also be instrumental in providing data for monitoring progress towards meeting the SDGs Goal 1: No Poverty, End poverty in all its forms. Role and involvement of women in agriculture will also be assessed through this census.

Results of the report will released in November 2019.

UK aid will protect thousands of vulnerable men, women and children in Nigeria from modern slavery and unsafe migration through innovative prevention work such as public information campaigns, awareness raising at schools and universities, and new research.

Nigeria's Edo State is a focal point of the human trafficking business, and is also a key source location for trafficking into the UK.

This UK aid package will help stamp out the root causes of dangerous migration through enhanced prevention work.

British expertise will:

- help reduce vulnerabilities to trafficking and unsafe migration through targeted public information campaigns in Edo State. UK government communication specialists will design and lead this in partnership with the Nigerian anti-trafficking police.

- boost engagement with young people at schools and universities to change the aspirations of potential victims

- commission innovative research on what works to prevent dangerous migration attempts

- support NGOs who use former slavery victims to counter false myths that tempt people towards the traffickers.

International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt said:

"It is a necessity that we step up and stamp out modern slavery for good. I am appalled that this shameful stain on our global conscience still exists in the 21st century.

"I am proud UK support is driving the charge in tackling the root causes of dangerous migration to prevent vulnerable men, women and children from becoming targeted by traffickers or attempting treacherous journeys again. The benefits of this will be far reaching- preventing regional instability and helping us tackle slavery here in the UK."

Working in partnership with Edo State, a critical trafficking hotspot, this UK aid will shape scalable, cost-effective interventions that tackle the key drivers of modern slavery and unsafe migration attempts. Changing the aspirations of potential victims and migrants in a targeted and tailored way will be essential to achieving this. This is why UK government communication specialists will design and lead a new public information campaign to do just that, in partnership with the Nigerian anti-trafficking police.

By making it worthwhile for people to stay in their home states and supporting NGOs who use former slavery victims to counter false myths that tempt people towards the traffickers, this work will help eradicate these crimes for good.

The UK is at the forefront of the global fight against modern slavery, leading the global Call to Action to end this crime at the UN General Assembly last year, which over 60 countries have now signed.

In 2016 there were over 40 million estimated slavery victims and the UK is committed to eradicating this global scourge, which adds significant costs to the UK economy. Behind these numbers are real people subjected to brutal exploitation every single day

But Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad would not have it.

On a visit to Beijing this week, he accused his host of luring nations into a trap with easy loans for projects they don’t need.

“We do not want a situation where there is a new version of colonialism happening because poor countries are unable to compete with the rich,” Dr Mohamad said.

He was referring to a string of contracts signed by his predecessor, Najib Razak — who was voted out of power in May — including a railway along the east coast of Malaysia, several ports and four man-made islands with plans to build swanky apartments for rich buyers from China.

After winning the election, Mohamad’s coalition published documents showing how some of the money was used by Najib to fund his party while millions have reportedly gone missing.

ASSETS TAKEN FOR DEBT In December last year, Sri Lanka was forced to give China a strategic harbour at Hambantota, 80 kilometres south-east of the capital, Colombo, and more than 15,000 acres of land, all on a 99-year lease because the country was no longer able to service a loan. Ironically the borrowed money had been used to develop the port at Hambantota.

At $14bn, Sri Lanka’s global debt, much of it to China, is close to what the state earns in a year.

Members of Dr Mohamad’s cabinet have voiced concern at Malaysia going the same way and the PM did not hold back when he told the New York Times that China was willing to “lend big sums of money to poor countries,” to develop projects, but when the loan falls into arrears, China will, “take the project for themselves,” he said.

He has cancelled a number of big-ticket loans and set up a commission to investigate claims of corruption.

Angola has seen its debt to China rising to a point where Luanda is now critically short of cash.

And China has courted Zimbabwe, retooling power plants and other ultilities along with talk of two new rail lines to the east through Mozambique.

Beijing has lent more than $90bn to African governments and state-owned companies.

In July, president Xi Jinping and South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa signed 10 agreements worth $14.7billion (about R220.5 billion), but the Chinese ambassador to Pretoria, Lin Songtian, said there was nothing to worry about.

“China will never repeat the actions of the colonial era,” Mr Lin told a local newspaper. “We won’t come here to exploit and run away.”

AFRICA AT RISK According to a report from the Centre for Global Development, the country most at risk is Djibouti, an enclave that controls one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes from the Indian Ocean to Suez.

Goods from Asia and Africa squeeze through a narrow strait with Djibouti on the left bank and war-torn Yemen on the right.

The government of President Ismaïl Guelleh has negotiated loans that amount to almost 90 per cent of GDP, with China holding the lion’s share.

Both the USA and France have military camps here, but China has built its own with space for more soldiers than the other two combined.

And the same firm that worried Dr Mahatir are present. The China Railway Engineering Corporation worked on Malaysia’s eastern line and has built a new track from land-locked Ethiopia to Djibouti.

Mahatir is scrutinising an oil deal with the Chinese National Petroleum Corporation who are working on a gas field in Djibouti.

“You look at a map,” says Malaysia’s deputy defence minister, Liew Chin Tong, “and you can see where China is plotting ports and investments from Burma to Pakistan, Sri Lanka and on toward Djibouti.”

But whereas Malaysia and Sri Lanka have enjoyed a change of government, largely brought on by claims of corruption, Guelleh wins more than 80 per cent at every poll in what opposition groups claim is a rigged vote.

With most MPs loyal to the ruling party, the president is rarely held to account. The port is the country’s biggest earner but in February he issued a decree cancelling a management contract with Dubai-based DP World, alleging the firm had not performed adequately.

When a London court ruled that the contract to run the container port remained valid, Djibouti simply rejected the finding.

DP World has made clear it will not surrender its rights.

In Washington, several congressmen have made known their fear that China might eventually base warships at the harbour on only southern route to Suez.

Mr Guelleh has repeatedly said he remains an ally in the war on terror and that neither the US nor Europe has anything to worry about.

But Sri Lanka is proof of how things can go awry when sovereignty is swapped for debt.

With Robert Mugabe no longer in power, Dr Mahatir (93) is the world’s oldest head of state and has been in politics for decades.

“It’s all about borrowing too much money which we cannot afford and cannot repay,” he said.

For Djibouti, the warning may already be too late. – CAJ News

South Africa: Constitutional review committee extends closing date for submissions on LAND by two weekshttps://www.theblacklist.net/communities/news-from-africa/forum/south-africa-constitutional-review-committee-extends-closing-date2018-05-11T12:27:17.000Z2018-05-11T12:27:17.000ZTheBlackList-Publisherhttps://www.theblacklist.net/members/TheBlackListPublisher

The Joint Constitutional Review Committee today met to discuss its programme for the public participation process on the review of Section 25 of the Constitution and resolved to extend the closing date for written submissions to 15 June 2018.

The committee further resolved to conduct its public hearings from 26 June 2018 to 6 August 2018 in all provinces around the country. Provinces with a larger rural area will have four days set aside for the hearings whilst other provinces will have three days of public hearings. Co-Chairperson of the committee, Mr Lewis Nzimande, said at least one of these days will be over a weekend to allow the working public also an opportunity to participate in the process.

Co-Chairperson of the committee, Mr Vincent Smith, said the later date for public hearings was to allow members of the National Council of Provinces to complete their work regarding the budget votes. According to him, the committee has received more than 100 000 written submissions to date. The bulk of this, around 64 000, came as a result of a single WhatsApp group that was created by a group to clog the system. A further 1 100, so far, came from AfriForum.

Prior to going to the provinces to listen to the public, the committee plans on having a colloquium with, among others, academics, researchers, stakeholders, faith-based organisations, traditional leaders, the South African Local Government Association and government departments so that Members of Parliament can get a better understanding of what they will be dealing with.

According to the committee programme, 7 August to 17 August have been set aside for oral submissions to be held at Parliament. Deliberation on the inputs is set to occur between 4 and 7 September 2018 with the adoption of the report expected on 11 September 2018, where it will make a recommendation to the National Assembly.

The committee was mandated to review Section 25 of the Constitution and other sections where necessary, to make it possible for the state to expropriate land in the public interest without compensation.

South Africa: Promoting Industrialisation, Sustainable Economic Growth and Transformation Key to Increasing Participation of Black Industrialistshttps://www.theblacklist.net/communities/news-from-africa/forum/south-africa-promoting-industrialisation-sustainable-economic-gro2018-05-07T14:13:32.000Z2018-05-07T14:13:32.000ZTheBlackList-Publisherhttps://www.theblacklist.net/members/TheBlackListPublisher

Promoting industrialisation, sustainable economic growth and transformation are key to increasing participation of black industrialists in the main stream economy of this country. This was said by the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Bulelani Magwanishe at the launch of a multi-million-rand Black Industrialist’s brand “Cloud Nine” produced by Mthembu Tissue Converting in Durban.

Magwanishe said that the Black Industrialists Policy was a key part of government’s broad industrialisation initiatives to expand the industrial base and inject new entrepreneurial dynamism into the economy. He said that Mthembu Tissue Converting was indeed an enterprise that has brought life to industrialisation, economic empowerment and local development.

“The launch of “Cloud Nine” reflects the light that we as a collective have chosen to be. Hence, it was of high priority to celebrate the results of the government’s policy intervention, alongside the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and other key stakeholders,” said Magwanishe.

He added that the dti noted the fruition of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that was signed with the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government as it demonstrated the joint effort with the province to advance the objectives of the Black Industrialists Programme.

“Mthembu Tissue Converting has proven its persistence through its total investment of R32.7 million. Alongside this, the dti has proudly funded the company with more than R13 million, utilised to reimburse expenditure from the equipment purchase. In addition, a debt funding of R31 million was obtained from the IDC. I firmly believe that Mthembu Tissue Converting will continue to contribute significantly to building the local economy of this region,” said Magwanishe.

Owner and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mthembu Tissue Converting, Mr Thembinkosi Mthembu said that the assistance from Black Industrialists Scheme has boosted the company’s growth and enabled its production capacity to rise from 700 to 800 tons of paper.

“The Black Industrialists Incentive Scheme also supported the installation of new modern technology which is used to process the tissue formation and packaging of the products. This has enabled us to triple our production, upscale manufacturing capability and has empowered the company’s competitive advantage,” said Mthembu.

Both One5 Foundation and NueHealth Holdings funded and built the phase one medical clinic that opened in Malawi several years ago. That facility now sees approximately 4,000 patients every month. The creation of the birthing center and the medical clinic are reflections of One5's commitments to both helping communities develop and providing them the tools to be self-sufficient.

Solventas Surgical Alliance, a public charity partner to One5 Foundation, is also announcing plans to begin fundraising efforts to construct a surgical center on the same campus. Dan Tasset, CEO of NueHealth Performance and Chairman of Nueterra Capital, a Solventas donor, said, "More people die every year in developing countries, including Malawi, from the lack of basic surgical services than from HIV/AIDS and malaria combined. This new surgical center will help combat that."

About One5
The five core goals of One5Foundation aim to heal, educate, equip, build, and empower individuals from diverse backgrounds to do more, be more, and love more. In turn, they are able to prosper as independent members of society. By investing in individuals, we make it possible for them to acquire the ability to grow and eventually give back in their own ways. Their support will help spread awareness of the societal issues affecting local communities. One5 has committed funds in the hundreds of thousands annually that will provide the opportunity to have millions of dollars of annual impact to our partner charities.

About Solventas Surgical Alliance
Solventas is a U.S.-based nonprofit that builds local surgical access and capacity, creates self-sustaining surgical practices and improves access to lifesaving procedures in low and lower-middle income countries.

Like traditional nonprofits, Solventas sponsors medical service projects and accepts donations, both financial and of medical supplies and equipment. Solventas sets itself apart, though, by working only in support of local surgeons who are struggling to earn a living in their home country, or who are currently practicing abroad but wish to return. They do so primarily by providing capital and access to surgical and practice management expertise.
